00:00 You know, and another thing, we don't call it twerking.
00:02 We shake, we wiggle, we wobble, we bust open,
00:04 we bend over, we punch, bitch.
00:06 Yeah, we punch.
00:07 Downhill.
00:07 We release our wiggle.
00:09 You all right, me?

00:13 Today, on a very special Made From Scratch,
00:17 we head to the New Orleans kitchen of the queen diva
00:20 herself, Big Freedia.
00:23 The monarch of bounce and successful entrepreneur,
00:26 along with her childhood best friend, Addy,
00:29 make Mama Vera's cornbread dressing
00:31 with sides of cabbage, fried fish, and childhood memories.
00:36 So the cornbread is done.
00:38 I normally do this in a pan.
00:40 But since I don't have a big pan, I'm going to go ahead
00:44 and I'm going to drop this cornbread in this mix.
00:47 Look how good that look, Addy.
00:49 Yeah, I'm looking at it.
00:50 Look at that good old blend there, honey.
00:51 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:56 Thank you.
00:57 You see that good old flavor there?
00:59 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:01 The story goes on and on, though,
01:03 like how I bounced back from Katrina and just hustling.
01:08 But I also was just like, bounce music might lose its touch.
01:12 You know, I started feeling like that because we were
01:14 displaced all over the world.
01:16 I moved to Houston, going back and forth to Houston,
01:18 bust the clubs open, breakers, all the night clubs.
01:22 The man called and said, everybody
01:23 keeps telling me, you know, get Big Freedia, get Big Freedia.
01:26 He said, I got to find out who the fuck is Big Freedia.
01:29 He comes get me there.
01:30 I go to the show.
01:31 I rock the mic, just, you know, doing roll call.
01:35 Baby, the crowd went crazy.
01:36 He hired me.
01:36 He was like, I need you every weekend.
01:38 Bitch, I ran it for like two years.
01:40 But the magic that happened in the clubs at that time--
01:43 It was awesome.
01:45 Friend.
01:45 It was everything, huh?
01:47 It was unbelievable because it was like,
01:50 we've been through something.
01:51 Everybody needs it.
01:52 Again, what we said earlier, it comes out--
01:55 the passion comes out in music.
01:56 Listen, I was going hard.
01:58 The crowds was going hard.
02:00 People were like, bitch, they would be running outside,
02:02 jumping up, screaming and hollering.
02:04 It was like some shit I had never saw.
02:06 So this is your--
02:07 you're telling your first experience of being--
02:11 you know, having notoriety.
02:12 You know what I'm-- like, really being in the know.
02:14 I was like, they treat me like I'm
02:16 Michael Jackson or something.
02:19 I mean, like, running up outside, screaming.
02:22 I'm like, it's our reunion, you know?
02:24 And I started hustling, like, come back to New Orleans.
02:27 We need y'all.
02:28 I started helping with the rebuild process.
02:30 I had one of the first apartments open when I came back.
02:33 It was dead in the city.
02:34 Half of the city dead.
02:36 It was scary.
02:37 You know, I had to ride around with my gun, you know,
02:40 because it was, like, scared.
02:42 It was like some type of ghost town.
02:43 It was, everywhere.
02:45 Yes.
02:45 Yeah, it was.
02:46 You know, people hadn't came back.
02:47 A lot of homes hadn't been got damaged.
02:49 Just going through that struggle,
02:51 it taught me, like, material don't matter.
02:55 What matters is life and, you know,
02:57 holding on to each other.
03:01 Look at this finished product, y'all.
03:04 That's cabbage with flavor.
