Mount Bulusan sa Sorsogon, nakapagtala ng 8 volcanic earthquakes
Transcript
00:00 We are here in Mt. Mayon and Bulcang Bulusan with Dr. Teresito Bacolcol, OIC of PHIVOCS. Doctor good morning sir.
00:09 Good morning also sir.
00:13 Sir this is Aljo Bendijo. According to your report from PHIVOCS, you were the one who recorded eight volcanic earthquakes. Is that correct?
00:23 How is your monitoring sir?
00:27 You are correct sir. On August 1, we issued a bulletin or advisory here in Bulusan Volcano because we recorded eight volcanic earthquakes.
00:38 However, between yesterday, 5 a.m. yesterday and 5 a.m. this morning, we only recorded four volcanic earthquakes here in Bulusan Volcano.
00:49 Bulusan Volcano has been at alert level zero since January 2023.
00:56 Other volcanoes that have alert levels would be Taal Volcano, which is alert level one, Mayon Volcano, alert level three and Canlaon Volcano, alert level one.
01:06 In your investigation in Bulusan, is it possible for a phreatic eruption to trigger?
01:14 There is always this possibility that a phreatic eruption will occur because this phreatic eruption is just hot water coming into contact with hot power.
01:25 So if it rains, there can be a phreatic eruption. Not only in Bulusan Volcano, but also in Mayon Volcano, Taal Volcano and Canlaon Volcano.
01:40 So it's possible for phreatic eruptions to occur.
01:42 What are your considerations to increase the alert level of Bulusan Volcano to alert level one?
01:47 Bulusan is alert level zero.
01:51 Okay. So it will not reach alert one? There's no possibility?
01:59 Bulusan is alert level zero.
02:01 All right. For our countrymen, when was the last volcanic eruption of Mount Bulusan?
02:12 I think it was in 2018 when Bulusan erupted. But we lowered the alert level zero. From alert level one, it's alert level zero since January 2023.
02:26 Okay. All right. So we have nothing to do with Bulusan?
02:33 We have nothing to do with Bulusan. The background level of its volcanoes will not exceed five.
02:42 That's why we issued a bulletin on August 1 because we recorded eight volcano tectonic earthquakes.
02:53 But yesterday, 5 a.m. yesterday and 5 a.m. this morning, there were only four volcano tectonic earthquakes.
03:00 All right. So we're still looking at other parameters. If there are changes, of course we will have to raise it to alert level one.
03:07 But for now, the alert level zero is maintained.
03:11 Okay. So before we go to Mayon, we are monitoring only three volcanoes, right? Bulusan, Mayon and Taal.
03:19 Only three volcanoes have alert level. But we are monitoring eight volcanoes.
03:26 What are these?
03:27 Eight volcanoes.
03:29 What are these volcanoes? Do you have a list of them?
03:31 Pinatubo, Taal, Mayon, Iriga, Parker, Hibuk-hibuk, Bulusan and Canlaon.
03:45 Parker. Is that in Mindanao, Mount Parker?
03:48 You're correct. Parker is in Mindanao. It's with General Santos.
03:54 What about Hibuk-hibuk? Is it in Dipubas, Cagayan, Dioro?
04:01 It's in Kamiguin.
04:02 Kamiguin. Okay.
04:04 How is the activity in Bicol, Bulcang, Mayon? Is Mayon still in alert level three, doctor?
04:18 Yes. Mayon volcano is still on alert level three and the effusive eruption of Mayon volcano is ongoing.
04:28 The effusive eruption of Mayon volcano is ongoing for two months.
04:33 Again, we're expecting that if we look at past eruption of Mayon volcano, it will last at least three months.
04:45 What are the indications to say that the volcano is still erupting and to lower the alert level?
04:56 Again, the parameters we're looking at is the recorded volcanic earthquakes.
05:06 We have 282 volcanic earthquakes. We're looking at that. If the volcanic earthquakes are low, if the sulfur dioxide emission is low,
05:19 if there are no rockfall events that we have recorded, and of course if there's no lava coming out of the volcano,
05:28 we can lower the alert level from alert level three to alert level two. Again, we're looking at that. We assess the situation every day.
05:39 Okay. It's your turn to give important information. We're not asking you. The country is listening. Go ahead.
05:49 Again, I just want to remind our countrymen that in Bulusan, we have a permanent danger zone of four kilometers.
05:58 In Calaon volcano, we have a four-kilometer permanent danger zone. We should not enter that area.
06:03 In Mayon volcano, the six-kilometer permanent danger zone is still maintained. For Taal volcano, it's the whole Taal volcano island that is prohibited to enter.
06:13 Thank you for your safety.
06:15 Thank you very much for your time Dr. Teresito Bacolcol and OIC of PHIVOX.
06:21 Vox.
