Shirley Smith High School in the new suburb of Kenny in the ACT is nearly built. It will have a double gymnasium and specialist learning spaces and accommodate up to 800 year 7 to 10 students. The school is set to open in time for the 2024 school year. Principal Rebecca Pearce and Shirley Smith's great niece, Ann Weldon, share their thoughts on the school being named after the Indigenous activist.

01:34 It's wonderful to be here and I am so, so
01:46 proud that the ACT government and
01:50 the ACT University have given recognition
01:54 and naming this school after an
01:57 incredible Australian treasure. As I said
02:00 she was unique and I know that she'll be
02:05 shining down on us and her spirit will
02:08 certainly be filled I believe within this school.
