Ivan Toney Banned Until 2024 Over Betting Charges
The FA has today announced that Brentford player Ivan Toney will be suspended for eight months after being charged in relation to breaking the league's betting rules.

00:08 Ivan Tony has today been suspended by the FA for eight months.
00:13 Wow.
00:14 Now, he somehow managed to miss this whole story.
00:16 It relates to the Football Association's regulations regarding players and their ability to gamble
00:21 on the sport.
00:22 Tony was charged with 232 breaches of this in November last year and then another 30
00:28 in December.
00:29 The subsequent 30 were later withdrawn but those original 232 were not and have been
00:33 sort of dangling over his career ever since.
00:36 And they date as far back as 2017 when Tony was playing for Scunthorpe while he was on
00:40 loan at Newcastle.
00:41 The FA's statement on the matter reads as follows, "Ivan Tony has been suspended from
00:45 all football and football-related activity with immediate effect for eight months, fined
00:50 £50,000 and warned as to his future conduct for breaches of the FA's betting rules."
00:55 The Brentford FC forward was charged with 262 breaches of FA Rule E3 in total between
01:00 the 25th of February 2017 and the 23rd of January 2021.
01:05 The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these breaches but he admitted to the remaining 232.
01:10 His sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent regulatory commission following
01:14 a personal hearing.
01:15 He is permitted to return to training only with his club for the final four months of
01:19 his suspension starting from the 17th of September 2023.
01:23 The independent regulatory commission's written reasons for these sanctions will be
01:27 published in due course and the FA will wait to review them before commenting further.
01:30 Brentford have also put out their own statement but it contains absolutely nothing of any
01:34 consequence.
01:35 It just basically says, "We have taken note of this, we have seen it and we await the
01:38 written reasons."
01:39 And just in case you're wondering, that eight month ban puts Ivan Tony out of the picture
01:42 until the middle of January next year, meaning any chances of a big summer move are now pretty
01:47 remote.
01:48 So just to wrap up, he's going to miss the final games of Brentford's season, he's
01:50 going to miss all of the England internationals in the summer, then he's going to miss the
01:53 bulk of next season as well.
01:56 That is pretty big.
