Leeds United progress to the next round of the Carabao Cup where they will visit Salford City after coming from behind to defeat Shrewsbury Town at Elland Road
Transcript
00:00 Hello there, Lee Sobot at the Yorkshire Evening Post here from Elland Road where Leeds United
00:05 have bagged their first competitive victory under new boss Daniel Farke thanks to a 2-1
00:11 success against Shrewsbury Town in the Carabao Cup first round. That success has booked a
00:16 second round date at Salford City at the end of this month so lower league opposition again
00:21 for that one but in the end tonight it was job done. It didn't look that way after going
00:26 1-0 down, falling behind yet again like they did at the weekend, obviously went 2-0 down
00:29 against Cardiff and rescued a 2-2 draw. This one, Shrewsbury weren't really doing a right
00:35 lot, they basically scored from their own aerial attack apart from a save that Kyle
00:38 Darlow made from a long range strike. But that was 1-0, basically just sort of broken
00:45 down the left hand side, Leeds' left hand side, Darko J being able to get near enough
00:51 his man and then a deflected strike off Leo Helder into the back of the net past Kyle
00:54 Darlow who couldn't have done much about that one. Leeds have struggled to get going though
00:58 really in the first half, there was a lot of sideways and backwards passes and the crowd
01:01 were getting a bit angry and Leeds not being adventurous enough. I think the players were
01:05 looking for people further forward but just nothing really happening. Archie Gray played
01:09 at number 10 today, thought he did very, very well, especially after the break he dropped
01:14 a bit deeper and what a talent he looks at, 17 years of age. He had the best chance really
01:18 in the first half when he created an opening for himself and struck a shot over the bar.
01:22 A couple of changes at the break, both of them made a big impact, Pascal Stroot coming
01:25 on, he ended up scoring what proved the winning goal. Sam Barham came on at left back, he
01:29 again did well as well. Leeds eventually drew level, looked a different outfit in the second
01:32 half really through Joe Gelhart, bit of an instinctive finish following up an Ian Paveda
01:36 shot. Paveda was very, very lively indeed tonight. And then Pascal Stroot, of all people,
01:40 popping up with a winner. If you need a goal, call Pascal Stroot, eh? There he was in the
01:44 box with a sort of no-nonsense, almost striker's finish really at the far post after Ethan
01:48 Empadu had sort of helped on a corner. That was 2-1, they had further chances, Leeds.
01:53 Sinisterra looked very lively when he came on right at the death, had a couple of chances
01:56 and should have made it a third or a fourth but wasn't able to do so. But in the end it
02:00 was job done. But like I say, it wasn't straightforward and they need to get rid of this habit of
02:04 sort of starting sluggishly and obviously falling a goal behind. But anyway, it's the
02:07 first win of the Daniel Farker era. As I say, the draw's been done, it's Salford away, so
02:13 it's an away day. What you would say is, although you don't believe any opposition, that should
02:16 give Leeds a decent chance but have been able to make round three. Interesting comments
02:20 tonight from Daniel Farker, Willy Nonto missed out tonight, didn't make the bench, he was
02:24 the only player to not make the bench who played the other day, who wasn't injured.
02:29 He said he wasn't available, so we'll wait and see what happens with that. But now it's
02:33 on to Birmingham at the weekend. Obviously Leeds have got the first win here under Daniel
02:37 Farker but it's important now, imperative really, that they get the first championship
02:41 win very, very soon and hopefully this weekend at Birmingham. Press conference to come very
02:45 quickly after tonight's game on Thursday afternoon, so we'll have all the news from that. But
02:51 anyway, the Daniel Farker era is up and running with a win, now it's on to Birmingham and
02:54 hopefully Leeds can get one there. Cheers for now.
