00:20 was made by experts during the sittings of the ECOWAS parliament.
00:24 Niger's elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, was ousted at the end of last month and the
00:29 coup leaders have since resisted diplomatic attempts to resolve the crisis.
00:33 Because you know, this is our president, they decide to pick people who are loyal to them,
00:40 especially from their tribes.
00:43 And he mentioned that and it took me aback.

00:52 making when it comes to political decision.

01:05 Check out from Burkina Faso to Guinea, Conakry to Mali and Niger, they are all presidential

01:14 And so we are beginning to fear that this movement, four of our neighbors, four of our
01:21 brothers who are no longer members of ECOWAS because of the sanction, will affect us economically,
01:30 militarily and every sphere of our life in the region.
01:38 It is not today, it is in Niger.
01:43 And from the analysis that has been asked, we have two more to go.
01:49 Two more coup d'etats to be witnessed?
01:51 Yes, two more coup d'etats to go.
01:54 And that should be a worrying train to all of us.
01:57 In fact, from all the speakers who came to talk to us, we have two more military personnel,
02:04 two more coup d'etats to go before the end of the year.
02:08 And so this should be a worrying train to all of us, whether we agree or not.
02:13 We had it last year, Abuja, and it has happened.
02:17 And now we have predicted that there will be two more.
02:24 Now the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Backman, however, says mistrust in the democratic process
02:29 is giving rise to tension and civil disobedience in the Ghanaian society.
02:34 The upsurge of insurgency activities around the country's borders has put Ghana's intelligence
02:38 agencies on high alert following military takeovers in Mali, Burkina Faso and recently
02:44 Niger.
02:46 Addressing a public forum on 30 years of parliamentary democracy, the Speaker said the military may
02:51 not intervene, but there is a potential danger of civil unrest if steps are not taken to
02:56 address the root causes of these agitations.
02:59 We hear that the space of development cannot match up to a population growth with a resultant
03:07 high rate of unemployment and its attendant security risk and instability, which we are
03:14 witnessing.
03:15 There are so many others I could add.
03:18 But let me tell you that because of this reversal of democratic gains in Burkina Faso, I used
03:26 to visit the President of Burkina Faso and the Parliament and speakers.
03:29 I used to go there.
03:32 And I was able to link a number of businessmen from Ghana to their partners in Burkina when
03:36 I was Deputy Speaker.
03:40 Look at what is happening there.
03:43 Almost about 70 percent is being controlled by terrorists.
03:48 So they run the schools, they run the health sector, they do everything there.
03:52 No government is there.
03:54 Mali, Guinea and Nigeria, these are not palatable narratives for the profile of our subregion.
04:10 It's as a result of this that the trust and confidence that voters had in democracy had
04:14 been trumpeted.
04:19 And that is why some of the earlier speakers said some people are preferring military rule
04:26 to the democracy we are practicing.
04:30 But even the military men and women, well, in military you don't have women, you have
04:35 only men.
04:37 They themselves don't want to intervene because the cost to the military is immeasurable.
04:46 They kill each other more than they kill the civilians because of the distrust, the injection
04:56 of disunity among the personnel of the security agencies.
05:02 So even after they return to constitutional rule, they keep on killing each other.
05:06 It takes time to settle down.
05:09 So they know the cost now.
05:10 They are not interested.
05:13 What we should be afraid of is civil disobedience and civil revolution.
05:22 Now the National Coordinator of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, Dr. Farid
05:28 Arthur, has disclosed that Arthur is working with other stakeholders to create a framework
05:34 to reduce the many barriers across the country to aid the free movement for business.
05:39 He said one of the national policy framework talks of trade facilitation and that component
05:44 looks at the removal of non-tariff barriers to address the issues of these numerous barriers.
05:50 Arthur has begun some awareness creation to get businesses understanding they need to
05:57 take advantage of this business opportunity.
06:00 So far the coordinating office has held nine regional conferences and stakeholder engagement
06:07 on the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.
06:12 Speaking on the sidelines of the conference in Tamale, the National Coordinator, Dr. Farid
06:18 Arthur, said they were working to reduce the barriers on the road but also mindful of the
06:23 country's security.
06:24 The trade facilitation component looks at the issues of removal or rationalization of
06:31 non-tariff barriers.
06:32 Some of these barriers are necessary.
06:33 You know the issues about security and other things indirectly.
06:34 But some of them obviously can be managed.
06:35 And so we are undertaking various studies and we are working also with the various stakeholders
06:36 including the customs, immigration, national security.
06:37 We are working with the various stakeholders to ensure that the trade facilitation component
06:38 looks at the issues of removal or rationalization of non-tariff barriers.
06:39 Some of these barriers are necessary.
06:40 You know the issues about security and other things indirectly.
06:41 But some of them obviously can be managed.

24:54 Now a less expensive form of dialysis for people suffering from kidney failure involves
25:00 filling the abdomen with fluid and draining the fluid to rid the body of waste.
25:05 The method known as peritoneal dialysis is done manually or automatically using a machine
25:11 called an automated cycler.
25:14 Now this automated cycler which does the exchange of fluid for patients at night is imported
25:19 and can be financially stressful for the poor.
25:23 Fortunately, biomedical engineering students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science
25:27 and Technology have been able to build a less expensive cycler.

25:43 These two procedures that we do, that's hemodialysis, we use the hemodialysis machine.
25:49 Now statistics show that the number of hemodialysis machines in the country isn't much and so
25:56 mostly they are expensive.
26:00 They are very expensive and so this procedure is mostly being used.
26:04 The manual continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis which we have automated, the traditional
26:10 procedure is being used in the hospital mostly for the children at the children's ward.
26:15 So we are sitting back and looking at the challenge that we have as a country that hemodialysis
26:22 machines are not enough in the country and most of them are being owned by government
26:28 hospitals and hence the price is very high for one procedure.
26:34 So we do this also to subsidize the cost and also it can be used in the hospital as well
26:41 as being used in the house.
26:43 Another part of it is that with the traditional continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis,
26:47 it's labor-intensive.
26:48 With the traditional continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis procedure, there is the
26:55 inflow, the draw time and then the drain.
27:00 So with the inflow, the mechanism that they employ is gravity where they hang the dialysate
27:06 bag on an IV pole and then they open the channel for it to flow into the peritoneum cavity
27:13 and then when it's done, they close the valve that's manually done.
27:18 They switch the valve for a draw time which depends on the peritoneum cavity of the patient.
27:25 So it can go from 30 minutes to an hour or more, five hours.
27:32 So with this procedure, we didn't want to change the identity of it so we kept some
27:39 part of the traditional continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and we automated other
27:45 parts.
27:46 So the parts that we kept is the inflow part where we use the gravity.
27:53 So here you hang your dialysate bag as my colleague is using it.
28:00 This is our dialysate bag for practical purposes.
28:04 So you hang it and then you allow for an inflow.
28:14 So here we are performing the rinse.
28:16 So as we pass through the dialysate from the dialysate bag, there is a motor in here.
28:25 For the traditional one, we use gravity for the drain.
28:32 But here we are employing a pump so as you can see, as the water goes in here, it is
28:38 being drained out by the pump in the machine which in turn speeds up the whole process.
28:47 And it's safe because the normal pressure does not affect the cavity of the human being.
28:53 So we calibrated our water pump in there with this value so it's safe to use.
29:03 So as and when the drain is done, you hear a buzzer indicating that it's done.
29:09 Then the valve switches to a different procedure.
29:12 That's the drain so then it goes to an inflow.
