Chennai Super Kings Not Thinking Of IPL Playoffs, Want To Bat Well Every Day: Ruturaj Gaikwad

  • last year
Openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway put on a team record 182-run partnership as Chennai Super Kings returned to winning ways against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League on Sunday. With MS Dhoni back at the helm, CSK displayed their swagger of old to win by 13 runs. The Gaikwad-Conway stand was the highest-ever partnership for CSK in IPL history as they reached 202 for 2 in 20 overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad rediscovered his hitting form and smacked 99 off 57 balls. It was his second half-century of this IPL season, and included six fours and six sixes. (Video and images: IPL)

00:02 While Jadeja requested MSD to take over as captain,
00:22 what did the new captain, MSD, say in the team meeting
00:25 to the players before almost a virtual knockout
00:28 game for you today?
00:29 Also, do you believe things can completely
00:31 turn around from here with some MSD magic, Rituraj?
00:35 Too many questions at a time, but about the captaincy,
00:39 I have no idea about it.
00:41 And they both know it itself better.
00:45 And we don't have much team meetings also.
00:49 So it was just a five-minute meeting
00:51 about a match, about the situations,
00:54 and how we should go about it.
00:55 And about the qualification, I would say,
00:58 we are just thinking of taking one game at a time
01:00 and not really thinking too much ahead.
01:02 Rituraj, could you just talk about the initial start
01:05 of the season personally, and also about your plans
01:08 to go after Umran Malik straightaway?
01:10 Initial season, I would say, obviously,
01:15 batting over here in Mumbai and in Pune,
01:17 it's really tough, especially in power play against the new ball,
01:20 because there's some movement.
01:22 Wickets are a little bit sticky and too paced.
01:24 So obviously, new ball has been really tough.
01:27 And you can't really go at one pace,
01:30 starting from either you are batting first or batting
01:33 second.
01:34 So obviously, you tend to get out to some good balls.
01:37 And you tend to be unlucky at times.
01:40 That is what cricket is.
01:41 And that is what T20 format is.
01:43 But you have to trust your batting.
01:45 You have to believe in yourself.
01:47 And obviously, the support has been there always.
01:51 And is about going after Umran Malik, right?
01:53 Umran Malik, not really, not planned.
01:56 I thought the wicket was a little bit slow.
01:58 And his pace was--
02:00 I felt right on this wicket, because obviously, he's fast.
02:05 And I just tried to put pressure on himself
02:07 right from this first over.
02:09 That was the main motive behind it.
02:11 And thankfully, it ended up on my side.
02:14 Opening partners, just because of the last season,
02:18 you were a faft together.
02:19 This time, it's changed.
02:20 How much difference does it create in your batting
02:23 and in your innings?
02:25 And can you choose someone who has better communication
02:29 and coordination with you?
02:32 Opening combinations depend on a lot of things.
02:36 Mostly, overseas players, who will play, who won't.
02:41 And obviously, this time, it's not Deepak.
02:44 So it's important to work out the bowling combination.
02:47 So Devon, unfortunately, missed out after the first match.
02:50 But I mean, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
02:55 I mean, CSK is a team, a franchise,
02:57 that we are all open against each other.
03:00 We love to share conversations.
03:02 We love to have conversations.
03:03 And we love to know each other about certain game situations,
03:07 how you want to go.
