00:00 "So do you like where hip-hop's headed now?
00:01 'Cause it's changed a lot over 50 years."
00:04 Carson Daly's 14-year-old son, Jackson,
00:07 is following in his dad's footsteps,
00:10 interviewing the stars and nailing it.
00:13 "We have a great, great family vibe,
00:14 and it's important to us."
00:15 The teen put his journalism skills to the test,
00:19 chatting with LL Cool J for NBC News.
00:22 "So do you like where hip-hop's headed now?
00:24 'Cause it's changed a lot over 50 years."
00:26 "It has, it has.
00:27 In terms of hip-hop culture,
00:28 I feel great about the fact that people are celebrating
00:30 50 years of hip-hop.
00:32 The fact that, like, you, you're able to, like,
00:35 get exposed to some music that you may not have heard."
00:37 But this isn't the first time Carson's kiddo
00:40 has sat down with the stars.
00:42 Earlier this year, Jackson scored an interview
00:45 with his dad's pal and former co-star on "The Voice,"
00:48 Blake Shelton, who gave him some tough but playful love.
00:52 "So the age to try out is 13.
00:56 I'm 13 now."
00:57 "Yeah."
00:58 "What would you say to kids my age?"
00:59 "What I would say to you is, music's probably not
01:02 gonna be your tag, Jackson.
01:04 I've heard you sing, and please,
01:06 for the sake of your own, like, self-worth,
01:10 don't put yourself through that."
01:12 And to be fair, Carson's also hoping his son
01:16 doesn't pursue a career in music.
01:18 "Jackson Daly?
01:19 He's gonna be quite the journalist."
01:21 "Oh my gosh."
01:22 "Quite the journalist."
01:23 "I hope so.
01:24 I hope not a rapper.
01:24 If he likes rap."
01:25 "Well, even if he did, he could combine the two."
01:26 "His journalism skills are good."
01:27 "Yeah, maybe.
01:28 Maybe he'll rap the news.
01:29 That's interesting."
01:30 For now, he's just reporting the news
01:32 the good old-fashioned way,
01:34 as a correspondent for NBC Nightly News
01:36 with Lester Holt's Kids Edition.
01:39 "Jackson, thank you for being with us.
01:41 What are you sharing with us today?"
01:43 "Today I'm sharing with you the Cincinnati Zoo.
01:46 They've had a awesome experience
01:48 since they've been closed on March,
01:50 about March, because of this virus."
01:52 And last year, he stopped by the Today Show
01:55 and said he's learned a lot from watching his dad.
01:58 "I learned that you have to always be prepared
02:01 and just act like you're just having a conversation.
02:06 I know they use the term big celebrities,
02:08 but they're just regular people
02:10 that you just wanna have more of a conversation with
02:13 and don't overthink it."
02:15 In addition to Jackson,
02:17 Carson and his wife, Siri, share three daughters,
02:20 10-year-old Etta, eight-year-old London,
02:22 and three-year-old Goldie.
02:24 And while his real family is at home,
02:26 Carson has his Today Show family to lean on at work.
02:30 "We bicker like brother and sister,
02:32 but we love each other too."
02:33 "I think a lot of the therapy comes in commercial breaks."
02:36 "Oh, yeah."
02:37 "What goes on?"
02:38 "Well, I think we're kinda there for each other
02:39 and because, especially these hours,
02:42 and the Today Show, they always say,
02:43 like, morning television is a special ecosystem.
02:45 So we all kinda get each other, we get our lives,
02:48 and so you need to be able to have family."
