Should ICC WTC Final Be A Best-Of-Three? Kohli, Williamson 'Clash'

  • last year
Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson have different views on the number of matches that constitute an ICC World Test Championship final. New Zealand humbled India by eight wickets in the one-off WTC final 2021 in Southampton earlier this week. Kohli wants a best-of-three but Williamson, the Kiwi captain, is not sure if the scheduling will permit. New Zealand are currently the No. 1 Test side in the ICC rankings. India will play a five-Test away series against England from August 4.

00:00 Vunak just suggested that he'd like to see this final played across three matches in
00:13 order that that might produce a fairer outcome. I just wondered what your view was on that?
00:21 I suppose the exciting part to finals is that anything can happen. We know how fickle cricket
00:32 is and we've seen it in other competitions and other World Cups and all other bits and
00:37 pieces. The one-off factor does bring a unique dynamic which does make it exciting and all
00:46 these sorts of things and on any given day anything can happen. We've been on all different
00:51 sides of that statement. I suppose there's arguments for both sides and I guess the challenge
00:58 would be scheduling in that series amongst a lot of cricket that's already on. But no
01:04 doubt the more cricket that you have perhaps within a series, the more you do find out
01:12 and the more it does reveal itself. But in the same way it was a really exciting match.
01:17 The first time that there's been this competition on and both teams were fully geared for the
01:23 game and it was a brilliant game of cricket. Firstly I'm not in absolute agreement of deciding
01:32 the best test side in the world over the course of one game to be very honest. If it is a
01:37 test series it has to be a test of character over three tests. Which team has the ability
01:42 to come back into the series or totally blow away the other team. It can't just be a pressure
01:48 applied over two days of good cricket and then you suddenly are not a good test side
01:53 anymore. I don't believe in that. I think it has to be a hard grind and something that
01:57 definitely needs to be worked around in the future to really at the end of three matches
02:03 where there's effort, there's ups and downs, there's situations changing throughout the
02:08 course of the series, a chance to rectify the things that you've done wrong in the first
02:13 game and then really see who's the better side over the course of a three-match series
02:17 or something will be a good measure of how things really are. So we are not too bothered
02:22 by this result because we understand as I said as a test side what we've done over the
02:26 last three-four years, not just over the last 18 months but over the last three-four years.
02:30 So this is not a measure of who we are as a team and the ability and the potential we
02:35 have had for so many years now.
