What we know about the ULEZ expansion and the what impact will it really have?

  • last year
We take a look at everything we know about the ULEZ expansion that comes into place on August 29 and how it will actually impact those in the new zone.

Out of 100 cars in a survey conducted using TFL’s portal, only 6 were deemed non-ULEZ compliant. Sadiq Khan has said that 9 out of 10 cars on the road meet the requirements for the Ultra Low Emission Zone.

00:00 Hello, I'm Jack with London World. Thanks for watching and for joining me today on a
00:05 mission to find out how the ULEZ expansion will be affecting people in the areas set
00:11 to be engulfed on the 29th of August. Keep watching to see how just 6% of cars in our
00:17 survey were found to be non-ULEZ compliant. But first, what do we know about the ultra-low
00:22 emission zone and its expansion? Well, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has called for a wider area
00:28 of ULEZ in an attempt to keep London's air cleaner and has said it will save lives. However,
00:34 this has been met with strong opposition, even from members of his own party, with Angela
00:39 Rayner blaming the result of the Uxbridge by-election on Mr Khan's policy. Despite
00:44 criticism, it is set to come in on the 29th of August. But how many people is it really
00:50 going to affect? Well, today I ambled around the sunny streets of south-east London near
00:55 Penge and Annerley, two areas that will be affected by the new zone. Using TfL's portal
01:01 that shows if cars are ULEZ compliant or not, I tested 100 cars and out of that 100, only
01:07 6 were non-compliant and one was deemed unknown. Now that's just a survey conducted by London
01:12 World and that doesn't include many vans that we know have been affected as diesel
01:17 vehicles are unlikely to be exempt. But for those with a standard car, the chance of the
01:22 ULEZ expansion affecting you, based on today, is less than 10%. And that figure coincides
01:27 with London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who stated that 9 out of 10 cars on the road are ULEZ compliant.
01:33 But for those it is affecting, the expansion could be costly. Last week, the mayor had
01:38 announced that the scrappage scheme will be available for all Londoners, meaning those
01:43 having to get rid of their cars could receive up to £2,000. It is unclear though how many
01:49 cars will reach that valuation and what losses those will have to endure if they want to
01:53 get rid of a non-compliant car worth more than the £2,000. Nevertheless, the expansion
01:59 is set to go ahead on the 29th August, so head to Londonworld.com for more on the ULEZ
02:04 expansion and the latest news across the capital.
