Jonny Bairstow's excellent century helped ensure England's Cricket World Cup semi-final destiny remained in their own hands as they overpowered previously unbeaten India by 31 runs at Edgbaston. A tumultuous week for opener Bairstow (111) in which he found himself at the centre of a spat with ex-captain Michael Vaughan ended with a maiden World Cup hundred as England posted 337-7. Bairstow whacked six maximums and 10 fours in a fine 109-ball knock before slashing the excellent Mohammed Shami to deep point. (Video: ICC)

00:00 Can you just describe how it feels to win that game after those two successive defeats
00:12 to get the World Cup campaign back on track?
00:14 Yeah, naturally it was a must win game and therefore we knew what we had to do.
00:20 We've been a bit disappointed obviously to lose the games that we have so far in the
00:24 comp but obviously India at Edgbaston is a massive, massive game so to put in a performance
00:30 like we did today I thought it was a great all-round performance in all aspects of the
00:36 three different disciplines.
00:39 What about your own performance?
00:40 A century and covering the yards out there in front of the holly stand?
00:43 Yeah, it was quite big that one side.
00:47 It was tricky up front, obviously winning the toss and then batting.
00:51 They've got a quality bowling attack.
00:54 I think we were about 40 odd off 10 overs so it wasn't a blistering start by any means
01:01 but I thought we assessed the conditions really well and the way we accumulated and then went
01:09 on from there was pleasing for the both of us.
01:12 Your captain has just spoken to the media and said you're at your best when you've got
01:15 fire in your belly.
01:16 Do you agree with that?
01:18 Look I think there's different occasions over a period of time that you might get questioned
01:25 about different things and I think that's professional sport in the way that you react.
01:30 I think what's gone on this week was a round table interview and obviously quotes and everything
01:36 and they all get sent off and people interpret them the way they want but the mood in that
01:42 room was actually very jovial and very relaxed.
01:46 So that's part and parcel of it and at no point have I ever said that any of the country
01:52 are not behind us.
01:53 So it was obviously disappointing to see what was written up and what was perceived that
02:00 I'd said but at the same time it was fantastic to spend time out in the middle today and
02:07 most and first and foremost get the win because it keeps us in the competition and we go on
02:12 to Durham now really excited about potentially putting in another good performance and we
02:18 know we've got three games to potentially win the World Cup.
02:20 On the subject of support, a very raucous India crowd here today but still those strong
02:26 pockets of England support are what always is a very strong ground for England.
02:29 Yeah of course, you hear Jerusalem in the morning, you hear all the songs that are ongoing
02:35 throughout the afternoon and I think obviously you mentioned about the Indian following that
02:42 was here today at Birmingham and everywhere that you go, everywhere that India goes, naturally
02:47 there's a huge following.
02:49 That's their national sport and you wouldn't expect anything less and I think that it's
02:54 fantastic for the occasion to be at Edgbaston, to be playing in a home World Cup with an
03:00 atmosphere like that definitely spurs you on.
03:03 Before today it was four games to win the World Cup, now it's three?
03:06 Yeah exactly, you just have to take it as it comes.
03:10 We turn up to Durham in two days' time, we see what the conditions are like, we see what
03:14 the overheads are like and then we go from there.
03:17 We can't do anything more than that, we can't change anything that's now gone previous to
03:25 the present moment but we can affect the future and I think that's a really exciting thing
03:32 for this group because we've worked really hard over a period of time and there's a lot
03:36 of excitement still within the group of lads downstairs.
03:39 Before the tournament began, would you have taken three wins to win the World Cup?
03:45 I think many teams would, to be quite honest with you.
03:49 I think to be in the framework, to be able to, as you mentioned, win three games to potentially
03:56 lift the World Cup is one thing but we know that we need to put in a performance that
03:59 warrants that and we've got to be excited about putting those performances in.
