Which came first: the chicken or the egg?
Transcript
00:00 Well, looky here. Scientists may have solved the mystery of the chicken and the egg. A new study
00:05 suggests that the ancestors of chickens may have given birth to live babies instead of laying eggs.
00:11 Previously, it was believed that these ancient reptiles laid eggs with hard shells,
00:16 but the study challenges this idea. Instead, the researchers proposed that these creatures
00:21 practiced extended embryo retention, keeping the babies inside them for a while. This protected
00:27 the developing reptiles from drying out in warm climates and allowing them to conquer dry land.
00:33 The study shows that lizards and snakes are more flexible than previously thought,
00:37 able to switch between laying eggs and giving birth. So, the chicken came first, not the egg.
00:43 Now I'm getting hungry.
