03:11 He was the epitome of what hip hop was
03:13 in my middle school years.
03:14 Lyricism, the beat selection, the storytelling.

03:22 The way he transitioned through his albums,
03:24 the competitiveness of hip hop, we all learned that.

03:28 I learned that through people like Jay-Z.

03:31 Keeping it nostalgic, we learned that through Puff, right?
03:34 Puff take samples from the 80s and the 70s and the 60s
03:38 and he brings it in, he makes it fresh.
03:40 He puts great R&B records and groups together.
03:42 Like it's just hip hop has had such a great marriage
03:45 with R&B from like the late 90s and the early 2000s.
03:49 And it just makes you appreciate storytelling.
03:51 It makes you appreciate texture.
03:52 It makes you appreciate the culture of hip hop and R&B.
03:57 My mother played "Dear Mama" for me from Tupac.

04:34 It makes you feel your vulnerability, you know?

07:16 and I was driving to LA.
07:17 It was at his house most of the time,
07:19 so he had a very short commute,
07:21 and I had two plus hours without traffic.
07:23 But you know, if you have a little tension in the studio,
07:25 'cause you're like a little bit behind or whatever,
07:27 it kinda makes more magic happen.
