00:00 Marilee Ventura is not only a mother,
00:02 but she's also a paraprofessional
00:03 within the Bakersfield City School
00:05 District, so she has a vested
00:07 interest in students making it to
00:09 school safely whether it's getting
00:10 to the bus stop from home or
00:12 getting to school from drop off.
00:16 Their kids and they need to slow down
00:22 'cause it's it's not cool to have that
00:24 image to even engraved into your head
00:26 where you have to pick up your child
00:28 and then the morgue. Marilee Ventura's
00:30 children are attending Dolores S
00:31 Whiteley Elementary School located
00:33 off McKee Road in the Panama
00:34 Buena Vista School District.
00:36 She says in the mornings they
00:38 ride the bus to school.
00:39 However, it's the bus stop just
00:41 outside her neighborhood that has
00:43 her concerned. There's actually
00:44 been times where. The bus will be
00:46 like right here. The kids will be
00:48 jumping from right here and having
00:50 to walk all the way over here and
00:52 with cars still going sometimes,
00:54 not even stopping for the bus,
00:56 and she's not the only parent.
00:57 This year's new community 2016
00:59 late 2016 has been off all day.
01:01 Reckless drivers, teenagers coming
01:03 and not, you know, not having any
01:05 concern about safety in the community.
01:07 Ventura's concern isn't only for
01:09 her children getting to school,
01:11 but also the lines of vehicles that
01:13 paved the schools pickup and drop
01:15 off zones as well. Here is this
01:18 afternoon during pickup at Whitley.
01:23 Is this kind of what you've been
01:25 talking about? Oh yeah, and then
01:27 you'll see like kids literally by
01:29 themselves, not even with the parent
01:31 walking right across the end.
01:33 The cars will be speeding by and as
01:35 a paraprofessional working with
01:36 special needs children at Owens
01:38 Elementary in the Bakersfield City
01:40 School District Ventura says she's
01:41 concerned for students throughout
01:43 Bakersfield. The cars just don't care.
01:45 It seems like the whole parking
01:46 situation is just hectic,
01:48 not just at that school,
01:49 but at a lot of schools.
01:51 I honestly have seen it in plenty
01:53 of the places. Unfortunately,
01:54 the same thing this morning at the school.
01:57 It was hectic. The people were getting
01:59 off not using the crosswalk and the
02:01 cars are just zooming by and under
02:03 California law, a driver can be
02:05 fined up to $1000 and have driving
02:07 privileges suspended for at least a
02:09 year for failing to stop for a bus
02:11 with flashing lights reporting in
02:13 Southwest Bakersfield for 23.
