00:00 Meantime, back here at home for the first time since COVID, the Central Labor Council hosted a Labor Day event at the park at Riverwalk.
00:07 A chance for a little music, food, and fun. 23 ABC's Raquel Callow stopped by to find out what Labor Day means to them.
00:14 Locals of Kern County gathered in lines for food, games, and many other events set up by booths of union labor affiliates of the Central Labor Council.
00:25 I spoke with Tanya Salinas, president of the Central Labor Council and host of the event.
00:30 She says she is proud to be here celebrating with the community and to her that means equity.
00:34 If one thing that we can take away from Labor Day really, it's all about community and what we do for the community, but what the community does for us.
00:42 I also got the chance to speak to those behind the music at the park at Kern Riverwalk.
00:47 Hector Garrica said he was there to play for all the folks to enjoy and help everyone have a good time.
00:52 I got in contact with Ryan Castro from CWA 9416, which I'm also a member of, and I just volunteered to DJ for us.
01:00 I had no idea that all these other local unions were going to be here, but that's cool. You know what I mean? The more the merrier.
01:05 Attendee Garrett Burnett talks about Labor Day and how it's a reminder to recognize and celebrate working people.
01:11 It's what all the people before us fought for, you know, actually have good working conditions and, you know, come together as a union.
01:23 Kern County SEIU Region 5 Vice President Alicia Elman says that being a part of one of the biggest labor unions in Kern County,
01:31 she and other members of SEIU are there to support labor and represent them on this important day.
01:36 Yes, we are labor, but we also live and work in this community. So for us to see our community thrive and stand together is important.
01:45 In Bakersfield, Raquel Colo, 23 ABC News, connecting you.
01:49 Thank you.
