00:04 The actor shares a message following the news that he and Britney have called it quits after

00:11 In an Instagram story, Sam writes, "After six years of love and commitment to each other,

00:18 my wife and I have decided to end our journey together."

00:21 He adds, "We will hold on to the love and respect we have for each other and I wish

00:26 her the best always."

00:28 Sam adds, "S*** happens.

00:31 Continuing asking for privacy seems ridiculous, so I will just ask for everyone, including

00:37 media, to be kind and thoughtful."

00:40 Sam filed paperwork to legally split from the pop star on August 16th, shortly after

00:47 reports surfaced about their breakup.

00:50 According to court docs obtained by E! News, Sam lists "irreconcilable differences" as

00:55 the reason for the split and the date of separation as July 28, 2023.

01:02 The docs also show that Sam is asking his ex to pay spousal support and attorney's fees,

01:07 but his filing states that he has yet to determine the full nature and extent of the separate

01:13 property assets and obligations of each party.

01:17 And it sounds like Britney is hoping to come out of the split stronger, as a source familiar

01:22 with the situation tells NBC News, "They're separated and it's best for Britney."

01:28 E! News has reached out to reps and attorneys for Britney and Sam, but did not immediately

01:32 hear back.

01:33 The former couple first met on the set of her music video for "Slumber Party" in 2016.

01:40 They revealed their engagement to fans in 2021, two months before Britney's conservatorship

01:46 was officially terminated.

01:48 Sam and Britney married in a private ceremony in June of the following year at their home
