00:00 I'm Laurie Blake, welcome to the WrestleTalk News, on Fridays we wear pink.
00:11 Now I don't know how you feel, but 2023 in WWE has been too safe.
00:14 We've had great stories, and then we've had them again for like 6 more months, but
00:18 we're missing the drama, the ups and downs, the teetering on a knife edge at all times,
00:22 the feeling that scripts might get ripped up at a moment's notice, I'm obviously
00:26 being sarcastic.
00:27 But fans of dramatic U-turns might get a kick out of this one, as it's the kind of
00:31 thing that would give old Don Toretto a tickle.
00:34 So Mustafa Ali has made his way to NXT TV in recent times, and on this past Tuesday's
00:39 show he debuted a new character, appearing on a podium, claiming to be a leader to the
00:43 American people and angling for a program for the North American Championship.
00:47 This is all a character that he reportedly wanted to pursue on the main roster, but WWE
00:52 never ran with it.
00:54 To go along with the new look he updated his Twitter and Instagram profiles with new logos
00:57 and designs.
00:59 For like a day.
01:00 Because Ali's profiles have now gone black.
01:03 Usually a dramatic sign that someone is leaving the company, but in this case he hasn't
01:07 deleted all of his posts, he's just blacked out the profile pictures.
01:10 So it's just a bit of a weird backtrack overall.
01:13 But Ali did post the obligatory new profile pic post with a blacked out image, so at least
01:19 he's having fun with it.
01:20 But what does it mean for the character?
01:21 Who knows, maybe they decided to go in a different direction.
01:25 More tangible is the news we talked about earlier in the week, and that is of Edge's
01:29 WWE contract being up following his match with Sheamus on Friday's Smackdown in Toronto.
01:35 Canada.
01:36 Where Edge is from.
01:37 This news initially came from Edge's trainer, but now the Rated R Superstar has confirmed
01:40 it himself in an interview with ET Canada saying "This is the last match on my current
01:46 contract.
01:47 I don't know.
01:48 I honestly don't know.
01:49 I probably won't know until I get to the locker room that night and decompress.
01:52 Let all the anxiety and tension that I never used to have before I performed, I have now.
01:57 That's strange for me and makes it much harder to do this.
02:00 I'm going to be 50 in October.
02:02 It's not easy anymore."
02:04 Notably, Edge doesn't say whether he has another contract lined up, will be giving
02:08 up the wrestling game altogether or maybe…
02:13 Maybe…
02:14 It's AEW confirmed!
02:17 Or well teased!
02:19 By AEW star Dax Harwood, who posted a photo of himself, Edge and Beth Phoenix just hanging
02:23 out all casual like days before Edge's final WWE match.
02:28 We'll have to wait and see what Edge does following his final match on this current
02:32 contract, he says himself he's not going to call it until after the match.
02:34 I don't really care which company he actually retires in, but the match has to be Edge and
02:39 Christian vs. the Harleys vs. the Dudleys and then they all retire together.
02:43 That would be lovely.
02:44 Now do you remember the other day when I clickbaited you, or what was it?
02:47 Tuesday according to my broken watch, about Lacey Evans' WWE departure?
02:51 Well I've got an update about her departure from WWE which she announced and was subsequently
02:55 removed from WWE's current roster page.
02:57 I got you real good.
02:58 I clickbaited you real good.
02:59 So good it wasn't a clickbait.
03:01 Though Evans teased the hell out of leaving the company, no word had actually come down
03:04 on whether it was a release or a contract expiry until now.
03:08 Dave Meltzer and PWTorture both confirmed that it was in fact a contract expiry.
03:13 Seemingly both Evans and the company were happy to just run out the clock on their seven
03:17 year working relationship.
03:19 This also means that Evans is now a free agent with no non-compete clause and is able to
03:22 work wherever she wants.
03:25 So watch out for her.
03:26 She's apparently opening a diner.
03:28 Sticking with WWE now and one man who we don't see as often as we once did is John Cena.
03:34 But you can't see him.
03:36 Now while Cena is a bona fide mega movie star these days, his WWE ties remain and there
03:42 may be one nagging accomplishment in the ring that he feels he needs to tick off still.
03:46 That being capturing the Intercontinental Championship, the one prize that he never
03:51 got his mitts on throughout his 21 years in the company.
03:55 He had the US title and who cares about the rest of the world.
03:59 And maybe, just maybe, Cena has now dropped a tease that that could be in his sights.
04:05 The massive asterisks around this whole thing is that it came from Cena's notably weird
04:09 and unpredictable Instagram account which already this month has posted a picture of
04:12 Stone Cold Steve Austin with his face replaced with a Greek food dish called souvlaki and
04:16 the legendary rapper Eazy-E driving around in a Nintendo 64 game console.
04:20 So yeah, big pinch assault here because it's basically Bizarroland.
04:24 However Cena's latest post was one that got fans speculating as it was nothing but
04:28 a picture of the Ring General Gunther.
04:31 Potentially teasing that a future match could be on the cards.
04:33 Cena loves a foreign heel.
04:35 He loves them.
04:36 It's also worth noting that Gunther has expressed his desire to defend his title against
04:39 Cena in the past.
04:40 In fact, after winning the gold last year, the Austrian told Sports Illustrated that
04:44 facing Cena was one wish he had in order to bring the prestige of the IC title back.
04:50 You can come out on a tag, Gunther.
04:52 While Gunther has already done that and then some, a Cena rivalry would be a nice bit of
04:57 icing on the cake.
04:59 Crossing over to AEW now and given all the drama and reported talent unrest stemming
05:03 from he who shall not be named.
05:05 It's easy to imagine the company's backstage area consisting of fire, screaming, rabid
05:11 dogs running around biting people.
05:13 You know, the usual.
05:14 Mad Max vibes.
05:15 It can't be that bad, as numerous surprising outside AEW names were reportedly in town
05:20 for this week's AEW Dynamite, according to Fightful Select, including a pair of former
05:25 WWE stars.
05:26 Funnily enough, the two ex-WWE names in question share a little bit of a history and it both
05:32 ties to current AEW collider Miro.
05:36 One of which is Miro's wife CJ Perry, formerly known as Lana, and Miro's former on-screen
05:41 flame Summer Rae.
05:44 Awkward.
05:45 It's reportedly both Perry and Rae were backstage in Nashville, and while the former
05:49 was visiting her husband with the couple also living in the area, it is less clear why Rae
05:54 was present.
05:55 Although as Fightful notes, she has expressed an interest in making more wrestling appearances
05:59 in the future, with her last match coming back at Royal Rumble 2022.
06:03 However, saving perhaps the most random for last, there was also a former WCW World Champion
06:08 backstage in Nashville.
06:09 And no, before you get your hopes up, it wasn't Goldberg.
06:13 No, it was perhaps the GOAT of all WCW Champions, David Arquette.
06:18 Again, no clue yet why or what he was doing at the show, but he was there.
06:23 Maybe he was just negotiating his opponent for All In.
06:27 One final name of note backstage at a recent Dynamite was, unlike the others, a contracted
06:31 AEW talent, albeit one we haven't seen in a little while.
06:35 I'm talking about TBS Champ- sorry, former TBS Champion Jay Cargill.
06:41 Yes, after reigning as TBS Champ for 508 days, Cargill decided to take a vacay away from
06:48 AEW following her title loss to Chris Statlander at May's Double or Nothing PPV.
06:52 While she was always assumed to be coming back, Cargill's lack of enthusiasm when
06:56 asked about her return by fans on Twitter had some questioning her AEW status.
07:01 But then again, she was on holiday.
07:03 This is how I react to coming back to here when I'm on holiday.
07:06 What do you mean I don't want to come back?
07:08 Rest easy, as according to Fightful Select, Cargill was present for the August 9th Dynamite
07:12 in Columbus, Ohio, with a report confirming the 31-year-old is still under contract with
07:16 the company and her hiatus is and was agreed upon.
07:19 While there's no real indication that could spell a return soon, Cargill's presence
07:23 back in an AEW show is at least a promising sign of a return coming up soon.
07:28 Cargill vs. Arquette at All In maybe?
07:31 Alright so that was two relatively calm bits of non-punk related AEW news, so that means
07:36 we must get into the CM Punk stuff.
07:39 It's like a deconstructed s*** sandwich, with two bits of bread first, then the s***,
07:45 now with the s***.
07:46 Because while much of the talk among the Brawl Out culprits has been on CM Punk and The Elite,
07:50 one name that hasn't featured in the news for a while is Ace Steel.
07:54 The most porn name in all of porndom.
07:57 Leading into the debut of AEW Collision in mid-June, Steel was reportedly a large sticking
08:01 point for negotiations between Punk and AEW.
08:04 Because Punk wanted Steel back in person at shows and AEW didn't really want to do that
08:09 for obvious reasons.
08:12 Eventually it seemed the two compromised with it, reporting that Steel would work with AEW
08:15 on Collision remotely, just not attending the shows in person.
08:20 And that was it really, until yesterday when Fightful Select provided an interesting little
08:26 update on Steel's status at present, two months into Collision's life in AEW.
08:30 Fightful confirmed that Steel has been back since Collision's launch, however not in
08:35 person and with no plans for that to change.
08:38 According to AEW sources that spoke to Fightful in May, Steel is considered an insurance risk
08:43 due to the Brawlout situation and as a result wouldn't be permitted to attend shows.
08:48 But being away from the company in the aftermath of Brawlout, Steel reportedly met with Tony
08:52 Khan where it was agreed he could return in a remote capacity while also being free to
08:57 pursue work outside the company.
08:59 Maybe even encouraged.
09:00 Please go and work with other people Ace.
09:02 Even more interestingly it was also revealed that Steel received pay from AEW for the time
09:07 that he was out.
09:08 Since returning, the report states that Steel has had periodic talks with Tony Khan while
09:12 also suggesting things for CM Punk to do, with his AEW deal said to be up in the Fall
09:17 or Autumn of 2024.
09:19 While Steel may not be physically present on Collision, he did reportedly play a part
09:24 in AEW's undercover boss CM Punk reportedly sending AEW head of talent relations Christopher
09:28 Daniels home from a recent Collision taping.
09:31 Yes, a talent reportedly sent an AEW official home.
09:36 Wrap your head around that one if you will.
09:39 The reason for this was reportedly due to Steel's absence, because Punk felt that
09:43 if Steel wasn't allowed on Collision, neither should Daniels be due to his presence in the
09:49 Brawlout fracar last September.
09:51 In the latest bizarre development to this story, a rather curious decision was made
09:55 regarding this week's Ring of Honor tapings, because usually ROH is taped on a Saturday
10:00 which is the same day as Collision.
10:02 However, this week they were held on Wednesday in Nashville on Dynamite's taping.
10:08 While this isn't overly strange, just wait for who appeared on those tapings.
10:13 Because according to Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Radio, Christopher
10:17 Daniels, Ryan Nemeth, Brandon Cutler and Colt fricking Cabana all appeared on that taping.
10:23 Considering that not one of those names are allowed to be present at Collision tapings
10:26 and therefore wouldn't be able to appear on Ring of Honor consistently, the decision
10:31 to have them all appear is super strange.
10:34 Even Meltzer admitted that the situation was bizarre, with no reason for both why the tapings
10:38 were moved or the four men's involvement being known.
10:42 Alvarez speculated that perhaps AEW will stage tapings for some of ROH on a Wednesday and
10:47 some on a Saturday in order to facilitate the use of the names on Punk's blacklist.
10:52 However Meltzer doesn't see that happening.
10:55 He continued to say that the change of tapings makes sense due to the need to tape the August
10:59 26th collision following the August 23rd Dynamite, causing regular changes to the scheduling.
11:04 Either way it's a bit odd.
11:06 Lastly we've got a quick note on the already infamous Texas Chainsaw Deathmatch on this
11:10 week's AEW Dynamite.
11:12 While the match has split the opinion online, it reportedly pleased Warner Bros Discovery
11:16 according to PWInsider and more importantly it earned AEW $100,000, all of which was donated
11:22 by Tony Khan to food banks in aid of the Maui wildfires.
11:26 Which is good stuff TK.
11:28 And now after much speculating online we now know the identity of the man behind the leather
11:32 face mask and no, it was not David Arquette.
11:36 But he was there.
11:37 Instead it was AEW enhancement talent Dean Alexander, perhaps best known for appearing
11:42 on the now dead AEW Dark, who took up the iconic role on Wednesday.
11:47 So there you have it, another one of wrestling's great mysteries solved.
11:50 Happy Friday everyone, we can all sleep easy for the weekend.
