It behooves these five 49ers to have a strong performance versus the Broncos for various reasons.

00:00 The big topic of conversation, which you've pointed out ironically, is the backup quarterback
00:05 deal, which is to me ridiculous, but let's do it.
00:10 I have thought about what Trey Lance did in that first game and I've watched some stuff.
00:17 Iggy, it is my humble opinion that he should not be a 49er, that they should get rid of
00:25 him.
00:27 They should trade him, they should cut him, whatever they can, I don't believe they should
00:33 start the season with him.
00:37 May I make some points before you jump in?
00:39 I see nothing.
00:40 Well, you had a look.
00:41 Anyway, so here's what I want to say.
00:44 Here's that look again.
00:47 What I am not talking about is these things, whether or not they should have drafted him
00:53 and given up all those draft picks, whether or not they knew how to bring him along, whether
01:00 other coaching staffs could have done better with him, whether it's fair or not fair to
01:06 Trey Lance.
01:07 I frankly don't care.
01:08 I'm not his agent and I'm not his father.
01:11 Life is not fair.
01:12 All I'm talking about is where he stands on August 15th, 2023 and I'm saying he should
01:19 not be on the team.
01:22 Here's my encapsulation, here's my reasoning.
01:26 The things that he's working on are things a college quarterback needs to work on.
01:32 He's too far regressed to be helpful to the 49ers this season.
01:40 I'm going to give some quick examples.
01:43 He doesn't read the field well.
01:45 He doesn't see it well.
01:46 He doesn't read his progressions at all well.
01:49 He doesn't get the ball out fast enough enough of the time.
01:55 He has poor judgment.
01:57 He throws better over the middle than to the sides.
02:02 These are all things that should be worked on in college and this is not a developmental
02:09 league.
02:10 They can't afford to have a player like that.
02:13 What they need to do, now let me clarify Iggy.
02:17 This season are you allowed to have two or three quarterbacks active?
02:24 You can have as many active as you want.
02:26 I think one of them is probably not going to be active.
02:28 So you can have three on your 53 man roster.
02:31 I guess you can have three.
02:34 What I would do if I were running the show, I would have Brock Purdy as my starter and
02:40 we're going to get into that in a minute.
02:42 What's good about him and what's not good about him.
02:45 Then I would have the other two guys, Darnold and what's the other guy's name?
02:50 Hold on before we go further, you want the Niners to keep what's the other guy's name
02:54 over Trey Lance.
02:55 Is that what you're saying?
02:56 No question in my mind.
02:57 What's his name?
02:58 Brandon Allen.
02:59 That's it.
03:00 Brandon Allen.
03:01 Okay.
03:02 Okay.
03:03 Snotty.
03:04 Mr. Wise guy.
03:05 Okay.
03:06 What's his name is better than Trey.
03:07 I got to know why.
03:08 Oh, because I think he's more decisive.
03:09 I think he understands the system better.
03:11 I think he's a big league quarterback and I think Trey Lance is a college quarterback
03:17 at best.
03:18 So whatever this guy's name is, it could be slimy.
03:23 It could be.
03:24 Yep.
03:25 And you got all of this from the game against the Raiders.
03:27 Iggy, I've been watching this guy for a long time.
03:32 Trey Lance.
03:33 He's he's a long time.
03:35 No one in the world has watched Trey Lance in a long for a long time.
03:38 Let me finish and then you can talk.
03:41 I've seen as much of him as I'm available to me.
03:46 And I feel in my humble opinion, he is not where a big league quarterback should be.
03:53 And they don't have time anymore to waste on him.
03:56 That's what I feel.
03:57 I feel they should get rid of him.
03:58 And the other two guys, Allen and Darnold, they can make them number two and number three,
04:05 however order they want.
04:07 I don't care.
04:08 And Brock should be the start of what we'll get into that later.
04:12 So I'm open to what you have to say.
04:15 Well it's not just what I have to say is what the Niners have to say.
04:17 Like Trey Lance was practicing today.
04:20 Brandon Allen wasn't because the Niners think Trey Lance is better than Brandon Allen.
04:23 I'm surprised that you think Brandon Allen is better than Trey Lance considering the
04:26 Niners think Trey Lance is better.
04:27 I don't give a shit what the Niners think.
04:30 I want to tell you and we'll get into this later too.
04:33 This is an organization that has mishandled the quarterback position spectacularly since
04:39 they've come in.
04:40 I grew up in systems who knew how to handle quarterbacks.
04:46 These guys don't know their S from their elbow.
04:48 So what the 49ers think, I don't care about.
04:51 I care about what I think today.
04:53 So let's find out.
04:55 Yeah.
04:56 All right, dad.
04:57 Let me go then.
04:58 Brandon Allen.
04:59 Let me tell you about Brandon Allen.
05:00 He's 30.
05:02 His record in the league is two and seven.
05:05 His completion percentage is 56.
05:07 His quarterback rating is 78.
05:09 He's not good.
05:11 He's not going to make this team.
05:12 He doesn't deserve to make this team.
05:14 So let's just put Brandon Allen to the side.
05:17 There's no good reason for the Niners to get rid of one of their top three quarterbacks
05:21 right now because whether or not Brock's going to start week one, but is he going to start
05:26 week five?
05:27 Is he going to start week 10?
05:28 Is he going to start week 15?
05:31 Maybe not.
05:32 And I'm not sure that Trey Lance isn't the second best quarterback on this team.
05:36 Like what if we saw a quarter of Sam Darnold and we saw a half a Trey Lance?
05:41 It's been one preseason game.
05:43 You don't want to see a second preseason game.
05:46 I'm absolutely open to it.
05:48 And that's a good point you're making.
05:50 If in the next game against Denver, Trey Lance comes out and really is good, really has improved,
05:57 have learned from the first game.
05:58 I'm open to changing my opinion.
06:00 I'm allowed to change my opinion.
06:02 I'm talking about August 15th where I am now.
06:05 And what's more, hold on, you just hold on.
06:09 I don't believe he can improve.
06:12 That's where the dark cloud comes to me.
06:16 I think he's a serial loser and he's not going to improve.
06:22 I think he already has improved.
06:24 I think he's improved his throwing mechanics.
06:25 I think he's improved his accuracy.
06:27 I think Kyle Shanahan said it himself.
06:29 He's playing faster and more aggressive.
06:30 I think he's improving right now.
06:33 And you're saying they should get rid of him right now.
06:35 I'm saying I'd like to see a second preseason game because this was his...
06:39 I agree.
06:40 I agree.
06:41 This was his...
06:42 Can I talk now?
06:43 Yes, son.
06:44 I'll let you go.
06:45 I'll let you go.
06:46 Okay.
06:47 Yeah.
06:48 This was his first game in 11 months since he broke his ankle.
06:51 That's a long layoff.
06:52 He hadn't practiced.
06:53 I mean, we all talked about Brock Purdy's rust.
06:55 We give Brock Purdy all this grace and patience because he had an injury.
06:59 Sky had a surgery.
07:00 Sky hasn't played in a while.
07:02 It's entirely possible that he will look a lot better in the next play.
07:06 I mean, I thought he looked a lot better in the second quarter than he looked in the first
07:09 quarter.
07:10 So I'd like to see the full preseason before I say something like, "Get rid of Drake.
07:15 Keep Brandon out."
07:16 Because that, to me, sounds like a little, a little, a little hasty.
07:22 You know what?
07:23 It may sound tasty.
07:24 That's what I believe today.
07:27 And when you talk about he's improved his throwing mechanics, who the hell talks about
07:34 throwing mechanics with a big league quarterback?
07:38 We're talking about throwing mechanics?
07:40 This should have been handled in high school.
07:42 You don't handle this on the 49ers.
07:45 The nature of the discussion rules him out, for me, rules him out.
07:51 Throwing mechanics?
07:52 Give me a break.
07:53 He should have handled this his freshman year in college.
07:57 You don't come to the 49ers and work on throwing mechanics.
08:02 I don't see it.
08:03 I mean, that was the scouting report on him, and they brought him in.
08:06 They said, "We can do this."
08:08 And now he's doing it.
08:10 He's not doing it.
08:11 I don't think he is doing it.
08:12 No.
08:13 He completed eight of his last 11 passes.
08:14 He couldn't have done that last year.
08:17 Okay.
08:18 I'm going to tell you something interesting.
08:21 All right?
08:22 All right.
08:23 You were working very hard today.
08:25 Iggy worked really hard today.
08:26 In fact, he just came over to my house to give me the camera and all this.
08:30 He has a cold.
08:31 He's been schlepping around.
08:33 I want you to know that JTL Sullivan put up a fascinating ... Have you heard about it?
08:38 I have heard about it.
08:39 I haven't seen it yet.
08:40 Okay.
08:41 Iggy, it's so interesting.
08:42 And you know, it's funny.
08:44 He seems like such a reasonable guy, but when he was on the Niners, I thought he was a putz.
08:49 But you know, it's interesting.
08:51 And here's ... First of all, his general grade for what he saw Trey Lance do was, "Yikes."
09:01 That's what he said.
09:02 "Yikes."
09:03 And then he had a very interesting perception that I'd like to share with you, and you may
09:08 disagree.
09:11 He used a phrase called "turn downs."
09:14 And what he meant was, when a receiver was opened down the field, did Trey Lance throw
09:21 to him or did he go to the check down guy to the side?
09:26 In four or five cases, he either didn't see the guy or elected not to throw at him because
09:34 he didn't have the confidence.
09:37 And he showed ... And again, you may not find it persuasive, fair enough.
09:42 But he showed that even at ... And he really blamed the offensive line for being what it
09:47 is.
09:48 But he showed at various ... It's nice when I talk and you're not looking at me.
09:51 I'm sorry.
09:52 I just realized that I didn't plug in my battery, and I'm going to have to do that at some point.
09:55 But keep going.
09:56 Okay.
09:57 He showed that at various points, he had ... Even with the bad offensive line, he said, "Throw
10:06 it now."
10:07 And you could see ... These were when he got sacked early.
10:10 "Throw it now."
10:11 And he had a chance and didn't do it.
10:13 And he showed how some of those sacks were on him.
10:16 Now, I understand you're saying he got better in the second quarter.
10:20 I'm not convinced.
10:21 I think what his performance was ... No, I know statistically he got better.
10:26 I think he's at the yikes level, and I don't want him on the team.
10:30 Do your battery so we don't ... No, it's not in the room or something.
10:34 I just think it's interesting.
10:36 He got better from the first quarter to the second quarter.
10:38 He was awful in the first quarter.
10:39 It was his first game action in 11 months.
10:41 His timing was way off, as JTL Sullivan pointed out.
10:44 Get it out of your hands.
10:45 I thought his timing was better in the second quarter.
10:47 I thought his accuracy was better in the second quarter.
10:49 What if he had played the whole game like quarterbacks do in real ... He might have kept improving.
10:56 So I think it's kind of, I don't know, it's kind of dangerous to get rid of a quarterback
11:01 who might be improving.
11:03 And it's like, okay, he should have had this handled by now.
11:06 Is it his fault that he didn't?
11:08 Doesn't matter about fault.
11:10 There's no ... in this.
11:12 Doesn't matter about fault.
11:13 But it's like, okay, you're saying he's playing like a rookie.
11:16 Well, he's 23 years old.
11:18 He's 23 years old.
11:20 And so the first two years of his development were wiped out.
11:23 So get rid of him now that he's improving at 23.
11:26 Okay, so we have a fundamental disagreement.
11:29 And let's say ... We have a ... And because I don't think he's improving.
11:33 I think he's always going to have these problems and you're saying he's improving.
11:38 So it's fair.
11:39 We have a fundamental disagreement on our axioms.
11:43 Yours is improving.
11:44 Mine is not improving.
11:45 I'm going to take the final word because it's my show.
11:48 It's my show.
11:49 Fair enough.
11:50 Fair enough.
11:51 I think he's improving.
11:52 Kyle said he's improving.
11:54 Kyle's not going to get rid of Trey.
11:55 Trey's going to be on this team and he's not going to start week one.
11:58 But I'm going to tell you something.
12:00 He's going to start for this team this year.
12:02 They're going to need him at some point.
12:04 And I don't know if he's going to play well, if he's going to come through, but they're
12:06 going to need Trey Lance at some point this year.
12:09 I bet you a bottle of wine.
12:10 How about that?
12:11 He's going to start ... We'll make a bet.
12:12 We'll make a bet.
12:13 Hold on.
12:14 Let me just say something.
12:15 I agree they're going to ... He's ... If they don't get rid of him, and now I think they
12:20 should, but if they don't get rid of him, I agree he's going to play because Kyle gets
12:24 everybody hurt.
12:25 I agree.
12:26 But if it comes down to him, they're in a world of trouble.
12:29 So how can we make this bet?
12:34 What can we do?
12:35 I bet you a bottle of wine that Trey Lance starts at least ... You put the number on
12:41 it.
12:42 How many games?
12:43 He makes ... No.
12:44 I want to talk about quality of performance, not number of starts.
12:49 Okay.
12:50 That if ... I believe he'll win a game for the 49ers this year.
12:54 How about that?
12:55 I don't know how many games he's going to play.
12:58 What do you want me to say?
12:59 That he's going to play seven games for them and win six of them?
13:02 I don't know how many games he's going to play.
13:03 He's going to win a game for the Niners this year.
13:04 They're going to need him.
13:05 He's going to come through.
13:06 He's going to win a game for the Niners this year.
13:08 Okay.
13:09 Can we make it two games?
13:12 He may not start two games, but okay.
13:15 How about if he only starts one game because Brock Purdy misses a game and he comes in
13:20 and wins it, do I owe you a bottle of wine because he didn't get a second opportunity?
13:25 Fair enough.
13:26 Let me say this.
13:27 I want a start from him, not a mop up.
13:30 Okay.
13:31 That the first game he starts, I say he loses, you say he wins.
13:39 The first game.
13:40 It's all going to be on the first game he plays.
13:43 The first game he starts.
13:44 I guess we have to work on this one.
13:45 Maybe people in the chat will suggest a good ...
13:48 You're saying he's going to have to play.
13:51 I'm saying, okay, I agree he's going to have to play.
13:56 He's going to get hurt.
13:57 He'll mop up, but the next game will be his game.
14:00 Let's do that.
14:01 When it's his game.
14:02 Trey wins his first start for the Niners.
14:03 Okay, let's do that.
14:04 He's going to start and he'll win his first start.
14:07 And I'm saying he'll lose.
14:09 And here's what I'd like to bet, a crude Beaujolais, a high-end Beaujolais.
14:13 Okay, sounds good.
14:14 I think that this bet is worth a Beaujolais.
14:16 All right.
14:17 I like it.
14:18 I like it, I like it, I like it.
14:19 You like it?
14:20 Okay.
14:21 (upbeat music)
14:24 (upbeat music)
