00:00 - Do you remember when we used to walk down here
00:02 and all the neighbors used to stare at us
00:05 and we used to be...
00:06 - And we would just be...
00:07 - One way.
00:08 They would look at us like we were circus freaks.
00:11 But you could tell they enjoyed it.
00:14 - The minute I got off on 14th Street,
00:17 you could hear the clickety-clack of the hills.
00:20 - The light, the light, the shadows.
00:22 - We called 14th Street "The Straw"
00:24 and that was our turf.
00:26 - Some people choose sex work
00:28 because they want to.
00:30 Being a trans woman in the '80s,
00:32 a lot of us did not have a choice.
00:34 - People were not hiring people that looked like me.
00:38 - Trans life in general, it was difficult.
00:41 I wanted to make people understand
00:43 the reality of our lives through storytelling.
00:46 - The one issue today that obsesses New Yorkers,
00:49 crime.
00:51 - The trainees were out on the street 24/7.
00:54 It was really a very bad situation.
00:56 - I mean, they think I'm out here to murder people
00:58 instead of have sex with them for money.
01:01 - We didn't know who's who.
01:02 You know, everybody's a client.
01:04 - I actually gave fellatio to a man who was a cop.
01:07 And after I was done doing his deed,
01:10 he arrested me.
01:11 - Whether it was from the police,
01:13 whether John, there was a lot of violence.
01:16 - I almost got killed by a John
01:18 who dragged me for half a block in his car.
01:21 - We were on the front line with the gay and lesbian community,
01:24 but you're not doing anything to help me from getting attacked.
01:26 We knew we were freaks to them.
01:28 - I can't even believe it.
01:30 It's like the things we had to do.
01:32 - The trans community has been in survival mode forever.
01:36 It's important that we all get an opportunity to...
01:41 thrive.
01:43 - We fought to be where we are.
01:46 - The system never gave us resources.
01:49 We created the resources.
01:51 - We have always been last.
01:54 That's not gonna happen anymore.
01:56 - You owe it to every trans woman before you
01:59 and everyone after you to keep pushing.
02:02 - We were pushed out of the neighborhood years ago.
02:05 I was determined to make a film about the straw
02:09 before we're gone.
02:11 - You're making TikToks?
02:13 - No. - No, we're talking about our lives.
02:16 Out here, before this became this.
02:18 - I remember that. - Ooh!
02:20 - He said, "I remember that."
02:22 - I'm sure you do.
02:24 What's your name?
02:26 - You still got it.
02:28 - You still got it.
