00:00 Senator Cynthia Villar, who is in favor of the Senate hearing to discuss the reclamation project in Manila Bay,
00:07 said that the senator's concern is that it could lead to widespread flooding in Metro Manila.
00:14 Clayzel Cordelia has the following report.
00:16 The sunset is still bright.
00:19 The Manila Bay is known for its wide and calm waters.
00:24 But due to reclamation projects or landslides, some parts of the bay were flooded by the island.
00:33 But 22 reclamation projects in Manila Bay were suspended while studying the possible effects on the environment and the people.
00:43 Among them are the 430 hectare reclamation project in Las Piñas,
00:48 which was suspended by Senator Cynthia Villar, as well as the project in Paranaque and Cavite near Las Piñas.
00:56 Villar's concern is that it could lead to widespread flooding and flood Metro Manila.
01:04 Would you like to live in a place that is always flooding?
01:08 I mean, even the investors will not come.
01:11 And it's a complete deterioration of the place.
01:16 So it's the welfare of the residents of the affected cities that will be the biggest effect of reclamation so far.
01:32 And of course, there is really a study that Metro Manila will have a problem.
01:40 The sinking, it's a reality because of climate change.
01:44 What's happening in Jakarta, it can happen to us.
01:47 Villar will not allow the reclamation to continue, particularly in Las Piñas, Paranaque and Cavite.
01:55 So he will call for a hearing in the Senate to discuss the reclamation project in Manila Bay.
02:01 Former and new officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Philippine Reclamation Authority will be called.
02:09 He will also make a resolution and protest to stop the reclamation project.
02:17 I will lobby that in our area it will be stopped because I'm entitled to that.
02:24 I have a legislated protected area.
02:27 There are 300,000 fishermen in Manila Bay.
02:30 People buy fish there.
02:32 It will be gone.
02:34 Villar welcomes the discussion, but he also says that the reclamation project should not be stopped.
02:41 He also said that many fishermen are suffering because of the alleged projects.
02:47 If the other reclamations continue along Manila Bay, the impact of the 22 reclamation projects is still the same.
02:55 About 90% of their catch is gone.
02:59 Our coral reef in Manila Bay is destroyed.
03:03 In the case of Oceana, the local government units that are involved in the reclamation projects will be called to the Senate.
03:12 To the local governments, study your mandate because this is a possible accountability issue for them.
03:22 They are the ones who are given the duty to protect the environment and to protect the livelihoods of their constituents.
03:31 It is time for the Supreme Court to implement the mandate to restore the former beauty and splendor of Manila Bay.
03:40 And not to cover it with soil and to put the islands as a landfill.
03:46 Kalei Zalpardilia for the people!
