00:00 DepEd answered that the plans to return the school calendar to June
00:05 will not be easy and it will take a year to return the school calendar.
00:10 How long? Let's see what Sandra Aguinaldo will say.
00:13 The school calendar started on August 29.
00:19 But the Senate discussed the possibility of returning the school calendar to the previous date,
00:24 which will start on June and end on April of the next year.
00:29 The school calendar was made in August 2020 due to the pandemic.
00:34 But it will not be returned to the previous date, according to the Department of Education.
00:39 There are a lot of things that we want to do, Mr. Chair.
00:42 But the reason why we want to return it to the previous date, there are a lot of factors that we need to consider.
00:48 DepEd explained that the school calendar will be completed on June 14, 2024.
00:55 If we return the school calendar to the previous date, the students and teachers will not be able to take a break for two months.
01:02 The time is also a big consideration,
01:05 so the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Arts and Culture also faced the hope.
01:11 In the study of hope, under the new school calendar,
01:15 the school days will be less affected by the rain.
01:19 Less classes will be canceled due to the storm.
01:23 You can see that June, July, and August have the most tropical cyclones.
01:29 And most of the tropical cyclones are in the northern part of the country.
01:36 The problem is that if the school days are in August,
01:39 the classes reach the summer heat, so the students and teachers are also having a hard time.
01:44 For now, according to DepEd, it is possible to adjust the school days to the previous five years until they return to the previous ones.
01:53 The problem of lack of weight and malnourished children was also discussed in the hearing.
02:00 According to Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, Chairman of the Committee,
02:03 there are 2.8 million children aged 6 to 10 years old who are underweight,
02:09 2.7 million underweight, and 1 million malnourished.
02:13 That's quite a significant number and a concerning number.
02:20 And the reason why I bring this up is we all know that a hungry child will not learn.
02:25 DepEd will expand the feeding program, so they are asking for a bigger budget for 2024.
02:33 According to DepEd, the country lacks 159,000 classrooms,
02:38 including 440 classrooms that were damaged by the typhoon and other disasters.
02:43 But due to the lack of funds, only 7,000 classrooms can be built this year.
02:49 One action that DepEd is studying is the expansion of the Senior High School Voucher Program
02:55 where the students in private schools will be given a subsidy or assistance.
