00:00 From calorie counts to portion sizes, we wanted to find out all the differences between Burger
00:04 King in the US and in China.
00:06 This is Food Wars.
00:08 Hey, it's Joe.
00:10 I'm busy working on some cool new videos for you and not be able to host today, but I wanted
00:14 to introduce you to my good friend, Nico.
00:16 I trust Nico's going to do a fantastic job.
00:19 All the Food Wars heads watching, make her feel welcome.
00:21 Take it away, Nico.
00:24 Here in China, our Burger King drinks come in three sizes, small, medium, and large.
00:30 In the US, our Burger King drinks come in four sizes, value, which we weren't able to
00:36 get, small, medium, and large.
00:39 Let's see how much our largest drink actually contains.
00:42 I'm kind of okay with it.
00:45 They're lying to me.
00:47 Our Burger King fries also come in three sizes, small, medium, and large.
00:53 Our fries come in four sizes, value, small, medium, and large.
00:57 Let's weigh our largest fries.
00:59 120.
01:00 140 grams.
01:01 Liars again.
01:02 This is the second lie I've been told in like five minutes.
01:08 I think Joe and Harry have beef with Burger King ever since #FryGate2020.
01:13 They discovered that the small and medium sizes were the same size, allegedly.
01:18 Allegedly.
01:19 I do not want to get sued, but let's see if both of them actually do weigh the same.
01:24 I don't think that I have to count every individual fry because that is a very big difference.
01:30 I think there's clearly some discrepancies going on.
01:34 Just for fun, let's weigh these value fries.
01:38 These are 98.
01:39 What's happening?
01:40 What's going on at Burger King?
01:42 So I guess you can get away with just ordering a value size for like way less money if this
01:46 is what's going on.
01:48 Our chicken fries come in one size only and should contain six fries.
01:53 Ta-da!
01:54 No way to escape from giving us the full amount here because only six of them.
02:00 Ours is also one size, nine chicken fries.
02:02 One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
02:06 This is the first time the Burger King has lied straight to my face.
02:12 Let's begin with our beef burgers.
02:14 We can start with the King's collection, which I guess are BK's premium burgers, whereas
02:20 the Whoppers are known as Emperor's, but they're cheaper than the King's.
02:25 I can just hear the nationalists starting to get angry already.
02:29 How could a king be more powerful and more expensive than an emperor?
02:33 What gives?
02:34 Obviously you haven't localized properly BK.
02:36 You need to know your audience.
02:37 Beginning with the pastrami Angus.
02:41 It's not something that you see very often here in China to begin with.
02:44 So in Chinese, the name is called the Big Mouth Angus Burger because the burger itself
02:49 is meant to be quite a tall burger.
02:51 But this is a very beautiful burger and I must say I am very impressed that it has not
02:58 come to us sloppy and completely crushed into paste, which was the case that we found with
03:04 other fast food chains.
03:05 I'm not going to name names.
03:10 Very dense.
03:11 I did have to open my mouth pretty wide and I can't quite taste the pastrami, but I like
03:15 that it's there.
03:16 Here we've got the classic Angus.
03:18 You can also get the spicy version, which is what I've opted for.
03:23 Oh, that's a spicy butter.
03:28 This is actually pretty interesting.
03:30 It's not the Sichuan spicy kind of heat that I've gotten used to here eating other localized
03:35 burgers in China.
03:36 But this is more sort of a straight up in your face heat.
03:39 Lot of black pepper and the caramelized onions.
03:42 They pair very well in this burger.
03:45 Introducing the Heavy Cheese Beef King.
03:50 So heavy actually, it even crushed the box that it came in.
03:54 Well, hello.
03:55 The Spicy Bamboo Shoots Beef Chicken Whopper.
04:00 That is such a long name.
04:02 It came in this box.
04:04 These are characters from a massive game in China called the Honor of Kings.
04:09 It's a MOBA, the company that makes this bought Riot Games, which made League of Legends.
04:15 The fact that it has this collab, I mean, that means something.
04:18 I just want to say it tastes very Chinese.
04:22 In the best possible way, it feels like I'm in southwest China right now playing a game
04:27 of Honor of Kings and losing badly, because otherwise, how would I have time to eat burgers
04:32 if I'm not respawning?
04:34 Additional member of the King collection is the Italian Spinach Bacon Angus.
04:42 One thing that irks me a little bit about bacon in burgers in China is that they're
04:47 this kind of bacon, they're wet.
04:48 And what's the point of eating bacon if it's not crispy?
04:54 Oh my God, BK burgers are so incredibly dense.
04:58 They're like the burger versions of diamonds.
05:00 Moving on to our classic burgers, this is the King Oyster Mushroom Beef Whopper Thai
05:07 Basil flavor.
05:08 My God.
05:10 Not only are their burgers mouthfuls, but so are the names.
05:13 You could actually see the oyster mushrooms.
05:16 Look, right here.
05:17 Let's give this mouthful a mouthful.
05:21 It feels like I'm in the gym about to do some really heavy lifting.
05:26 And then...
05:31 Another classic, the Grilled Pineapple Whopper.
05:35 One gigantic pineapple ring.
05:39 If I had two more hands, so...
05:41 The Pork Cubes and Beef Burger.
05:44 Who names these things?
05:46 The Pork Cubes that it refers to is Pork Neck.
05:51 The meat lover's heaven, isn't it?
05:53 I could do this.
05:54 I feel like my jaw is about to break.
05:58 Oh yes.
06:01 Wow.
06:02 That is amazing.
06:06 This pork neck is just absolutely delicious.
06:11 Moving on to our value section, we've got the Spicy Whopper Junior.
06:16 Oh, look at this little guy.
06:18 You can also get the Pineapple Bacon Whopper Junior, also in this size.
06:24 This is our bacon corner.
06:26 So we have the Bacon King, and there is a Bacon Cheeseburger and a Double Bacon Cheeseburger.
06:31 I really want to taste the Bacon King.
06:33 That's like a big burger for fast food, right?
06:37 That is heavy too.
06:38 My face is bigger, but it doesn't smell as good as this burger does.
06:43 Kind of tastes like a burger right off the grill.
06:46 I don't think they are.
06:49 Now let's move on to the Whoppers.
06:50 I think these are definitely Burger King's claim to fame.
06:53 It's what they're most known for.
06:55 This is the Texas Double Whopper.
06:58 This kind of looks like the Mondo Burger from Good Burger.
07:05 That is not ASMR.
07:06 What's the opposite of ASMR?
07:08 And the last Whopper we have is the Impossible Whopper, which I actually think tastes pretty
07:12 delicious.
07:13 Like this looks like a hamburger from a play food set I had as a child.
07:18 It just doesn't look very real.
07:20 This looks like a monster.
07:22 I do want to take a bite of the Texas Double Whopper just because it's got a lot of stuff
07:27 in it.
07:28 That is so good.
07:29 Oh my God, it's really spicy.
07:31 And here we have our Single Rodeo Clown King Burger.
07:37 Single Rodeo Burger King Pounder.
07:40 All of them share the exact same words.
07:42 It's crazy.
07:43 And here we have the Single Quarter Pound King and the Rodeo Burger, which I think has
07:48 onion rings in it.
07:49 I was wrong.
07:50 Okay, pretend I said the opposite.
07:53 So this is the Rodeo Burger and it's got onion rings and what looks like sticky barbecue
07:58 sauce.
07:59 It's just a little congealed in there.
08:03 I think it could be good.
08:05 It's just not very good.
08:06 Now let's move on to the chicken sandwiches or burgers, whichever you prefer.
08:11 As for chicken, you can get the Chicken Whopper coming in classic or spicy flavors.
08:17 You can get the Grilled Pineapple Chicken Whopper as well.
08:21 Next we've got the Chicken Big King.
08:23 Now the Big King is a collection and we have beef, which is not exclusive here in China,
08:28 but chicken and fish are.
08:31 And it's basically kind of like a Big Mac in that there are two patties and a bun in
08:37 the middle.
08:38 That's a lot of red.
08:41 This here is the Fruitwood Grilled Chicken Burger.
08:47 Spicy chicken burger.
08:48 The chicken is threatening to escape.
08:52 The more you chew it, the more flavorful it becomes.
08:57 And now it's almost like a thermometer in my mouth.
09:02 I can feel the spiciness rising up.
09:05 I swallowed just now and my saliva is spicy.
09:09 We have the Crispy Chicken Sandwich.
09:11 But what makes this a sandwich and this a burger?
09:16 I have no idea.
09:17 There's also a double version of that.
09:21 Excuse my lettuce.
09:23 That is called the Double Chicken Burger.
09:27 So if it's a single, it's a crispy chicken sandwich.
09:29 But if it's a double, then it just becomes something else.
09:32 Anyway, this also comes in original or rattan pepper flavor.
09:37 Here we have the chicken version of the Italian Spinach Bacon Whopper.
09:42 A surprise for you all.
09:46 This is new on the menu.
09:49 The Black Cheese and Crispy Chicken Sandwich.
09:54 So this thing is not nori.
09:56 This is actually a slice of cheddar cheese that's been dyed black with squid ink.
10:03 Because just why not?
10:05 So if you thought this was weird, check this out.
10:09 This is the Black Cheese and Crispy Chicken Burger.
10:15 Most importantly, instead of the bun, they've replaced it with two pieces of black cheese.
10:24 Mind blown.
10:26 I think this is basically just an excuse for you to not feel guilty about eating a
10:31 piece of spicy chicken by itself without the bread.
10:35 It's basically just there as like tissue to help you eat this thing.
10:41 We have two chicken exclusives, the Original Chicken Sandwich and the Chicken Jr.
10:46 This shape is actually very unique and pretty iconic in a world of circular chicken sandwiches.
10:53 Like this stands out to me.
10:55 Usually the chicken sandwiches I see look like this.
10:57 Just you know, nothing special.
10:59 But this is special.
11:01 BK also offers fish exclusives.
11:04 Here we've got the Fish and Crisp, which I believe uses a cod fillet.
11:10 And of course, the fish version of the big thing.
11:15 And of course, we also have a pork section comprising of two burgers, the Pork Neck and
11:20 Beef Burger, which I took a nice big chunk out of before, and the chicken version of
11:26 this pork burger.
11:28 And here is our fish option, the Big Fish.
11:32 This is the smoothest bun I've ever seen.
11:35 Look how shiny and beautiful that is.
11:39 It's not offensive.
11:40 It's not particularly great.
11:43 These are our exclusive snacks here in Burger King China.
11:47 I feel like the encroaching on KFC territory a little bit because all of this is chicken.
11:52 We've got the Mala Chicken Drumstick.
11:56 So mala literally just means numb and spicy.
11:59 And it's referring to the Sichuanese style of cooking with the peppercorn, which gives
12:04 you the numbness and the chili heat.
12:07 Oh, wow.
12:09 I feel like this is probably the strongest mala flavor that I've had thus far on Food
12:18 Wars.
12:19 It's starting to turn my tongue numb.
12:21 I'm quite pleasantly surprised.
12:23 Here we got the petite version, the Mala Chicken Wings.
12:26 This here, the King Hot and Spicy Chicken Wings.
12:30 Oh, man, I much prefer it over the mala, to be honest.
12:35 This is a lot more balanced.
12:37 It's more flavorful.
12:38 It's meatier.
12:39 So these are called the Spicy Flavor Chicken Slices.
12:44 Apparently it's four millimeter thin slices of chicken breast.
12:49 It just kind of looks like mini chicken nuggets, doesn't it?
12:52 This is the Chicken Box, which contains a medley of what we sampled earlier.
12:59 So Burger King also has other versions of the bucket, the box, whatever you'd like to
13:03 call it.
13:04 They've got the King Chicken Bucket, the King Bucket, and the King Bucket Plus.
13:08 They're basically the BK version of the Party Bucket or Family Bucket.
13:13 For those of you who could not get enough of the black cheese, you can also get it as
13:20 a standalone piece.
13:21 Just one piece of good old cheddar cheese dyed black with squid ink.
13:26 Oh, BK, you are so funny.
13:30 You can always opt for the Garden Salad.
13:33 And here in Chinese it actually says, "Mama is shouting at you, telling you to eat more
13:39 veggies."
13:40 And these are our exclusive side options.
13:43 We have onion rings.
13:46 Don't mind if I do.
13:48 They're soggy.
13:51 And we also have mozzarella sticks, which I feel like at this point are fully congealed
13:57 back into their frozen state.
14:02 These were supposed to come with a marinara sauce.
14:04 I don't think I got one.
14:05 We also have Mott's apple sauce as a side, but they unfortunately ran out.
14:10 And here are our exclusive sauces.
14:16 We have buffalo, ranch, honey mustard, and zesty.
14:21 I know what pretty much all these sauces taste like except for zesty.
14:25 I'm very confused as to what this could be.
14:28 I swatched this one for you guys just so you can see what it looks like on my skin tone.
14:33 This is the most disturbing, stupid thing I've ever done.
14:42 Horseradishy.
14:43 I feel like zesty gives me like, "Ooh, zesty."
14:46 This is like, "Ooh, zesty.
14:48 That's nasty."
14:49 Time for dessert.
14:52 We can start with the Ovaltine King Fusion.
14:54 This comes in original strawberry and brown sugar bubble flavor.
15:01 The Ovaltine was the little sort of brown flakes on top.
15:06 That's what tastes like milk chocolate.
15:08 Not bad.
15:09 It's not as sweet as I thought it would be.
15:11 Ovaltine King Fusion, brown sugar bubble edition.
15:14 Very elusive, these things.
15:16 Where are they?
15:18 Oh, here we go.
15:21 Mm, delicious.
15:22 Once upon a time, this was the Hokkaido flavor ice cream waffle cone.
15:29 It tastes like melted ice cream.
15:30 I can't tell.
15:32 If you say it's Hokkaido, I'm none the wiser.
15:36 This is the crispy chocolate and nuts sundae.
15:39 Haagen-Dazs, Ben and Jerry, get out the way.
15:42 BK's in town.
15:43 Look at that.
15:44 That looks lux.
15:45 And look at how much chocolate is in here.
15:48 This is basically half a bar of chocolate in ice cream.
15:51 There's nothing that could be better than this.
15:53 I think it's peanut.
15:54 I'm not sure.
15:55 Who cares?
15:56 Oh, it's delicious.
15:57 And the strawberry pulp sundae.
16:00 Actual strawberry in the sundae.
16:03 Color me impressed.
16:04 But this pie comes in two different flavors.
16:08 Dark chocolate or mango and coconut.
16:11 Let me check which one this is.
16:13 I think it's a telltale sign.
16:14 I think it's probably the chocolate.
16:16 Deep fried chocolate.
16:18 What could go wrong?
16:19 These are called crispy sick milk bars.
16:24 It's creamy, but it doesn't really taste like much.
16:28 This is the soft mochi ice cream and it comes in two flavors.
16:33 Strawberry yogurt and salted egg.
16:39 Wow.
16:43 It's kind of like a custard.
16:48 This kind of tastes like what would happen if you took the heart out of a mooncake and
16:53 liquefied it and just drank it.
16:56 Oh my God.
16:57 I think I'm seeing stars from my blood sugar spiking.
17:02 Let's talk about desserts.
17:03 At Burger King in the US, you can get a soft serve cup, a soft serve cone, or the Hershey's
17:09 Sundae Pie.
17:11 This was one of my favorite things ever as a kid.
17:13 I would always get it every time we went to Burger King.
17:16 Look at this.
17:17 It literally says yum on every side because it's that good.
17:20 They look exactly the same as when I was little.
17:25 That is so delicious.
17:28 These are the exclusive drinks on the Burger King China menu.
17:33 Looks weird, doesn't it?
17:34 It just looks like 7-Up, but this is actually coconut flavored lemon sparkling drink.
17:41 Peach flavor oolong tea.
17:43 This is the brown sugar boba milk tea.
17:47 You can get this hot or cold.
17:49 And also, if you take away the boba balls, it will just basically become the Hong Kong
17:54 style milk tea, which you can also get hot or cold.
17:59 The crispy chocolate no top milk tea.
18:03 You can also get Ceylon tea, which is just black tea, or hot or cold soy milk, which
18:09 this is.
18:10 You can get juice too.
18:12 Grapefruit juice and mixed berries juice.
18:15 Next, we have the King Coffee Collection, and this is just honestly the cutest cup ever.
18:21 You can get your latte or your flat white, your hazelnut latte or cappuccino in this
18:26 very, very cute squat cup.
18:30 Or if you don't like being cute, you can just opt for a regular sized Americano.
18:37 Drink exclusives in the US include Coke Zero, Sprite Zero, Barks Root Beer, Dr. Pepper,
18:43 Fanta Orange, Mellow Yellow, Powerade Zero, Hi-C Fruit Punch, and Hi-C Pink Lemonade.
18:50 It's a fast food restaurant, so of course they also offer milkshakes and frozen beverages.
18:55 We have a vanilla milkshake, a chocolate milkshake, an Oreo milkshake, a chocolate Oreo milkshake.
19:02 This is a frozen Fanta Wild Cherry, and this is supposed to be a frozen Coke, but it's
19:07 another frozen Fanta Wild Cherry.
19:09 We've been putting the people at Burger King through a lot today, so some mistakes were
19:13 made.
19:14 They also supposedly offer a strawberry milkshake, but that wasn't available at our Burger
19:18 King.
19:19 *Bleep* has a better vanilla milkshake.
19:22 Alright, let's try this frozen Fanta Wild Cherry.
19:26 This is basically just a slushie, right?
19:29 That's very good.
19:30 These are Burger King China's exclusive breakfast menus.
19:34 Okay, so just like McDonald's and KFC, Burger King also does a pretty decent breakfast menu
19:40 here in China, not quite as extensive as KFC and nowhere near as exhaustive as McDonald's,
19:48 but what Burger King has over both of them is the croissant sandwich.
19:53 I love croissant sandwiches, although it's kind of weird how in China they're not called
19:59 by their actual names, but they're called croissants.
20:03 So this is the standard croissant sandwich, or as we call it here in China, the pork,
20:09 egg and cheese croissant.
20:11 Next we have the pastrami and scrambled egg croissant.
20:16 In Chinese we would call it yangqi, which kind of means like "Western style" of BK.
20:21 I mean, obviously it's Western style, but the fact that you have pastrami and scrambled
20:26 egg, this combination just seems very, very foreign to Chinese culture, and I think in
20:32 a cool way, this is great, just staying true to BK's roots.
20:35 Mmm, I love pastrami.
20:39 What have we got here?
20:40 The beef, egg, cheese croissant.
20:42 And last but not least in our croissant series, butter croissant, which is...
20:48 Alright BK, you made this a seasonal menu item.
20:53 I don't understand what it has to do with seasons.
20:55 It's literally just two pieces of your croissant bread.
20:58 This is the double egg and beef burger.
21:02 Two eggs with two beef patties sandwiched in between, no bread whatsoever.
21:09 There is no way you can safely get away with eating this without making a mess of yourself.
21:13 Now onto your more standard fare, the grilled beef cheese muffin.
21:19 You can also get this grilled beef cheese egg muffin.
21:23 Oh, now we have something special.
21:26 The tamagoyaki and fruitwood flavor grilled chicken muffin.
21:32 Look at that.
21:34 Mmm, oh this is delicious.
21:35 I highly recommend it.
21:37 And if you don't want beef in your muffin, you can get it as a cheese egg muffin.
21:42 If you don't want egg nor beef, then you can get it as a grilled pork muffin.
21:48 BK also has an assortment of breakfast wraps, the scrambled egg and cheese sausage wrap.
21:54 Beijing style roasted chicken wrap.
21:58 No leak.
22:00 Just the cucumbers and the tianmian sauce.
22:03 We're missing the last item on the holy trinity of the Beijing style wrap.
22:10 You know, it's inoffensive.
22:12 That's all I can say.
22:14 This is something special.
22:17 Salted egg yolk chicken wrap.
22:19 The salted egg yolk is actually smeared all over the chicken here.
22:25 Oh, that's very ingenious of BK.
22:30 There's no mistaking that salted egg.
22:32 Wow.
22:33 Texture wise, it's like it's an egg yolk that has been matured.
22:37 Kind of like a fine vintage egg, if that makes sense.
22:41 Last but not least, we've got the mixed vegetable and roasted chicken wrap.
22:46 And of course, we've got to have congee.
22:48 Two types.
22:49 This is century egg and this is salted egg.
22:52 Give the century egg a try.
22:54 Oh yeah, it's pretty strong.
22:57 There's a very, very fine line between tasty and stinky.
23:01 And century egg firmly straddles that line.
23:04 I've never had salted egg yolk in a congee before.
23:11 Congee is not my favorite breakfast item, but I think with this kind of flavoring, I
23:15 can dig it.
23:17 And of course, on every single breakfast menu, there's going to be crispy Chinese
23:21 cruller, the you tiao.
23:24 They all look the same, no matter which fast food chain you go to.
23:27 BK also has a sunny side up egg.
23:30 Again, you can't really tell where the sun is.
23:34 This is pretty interesting.
23:35 The bean paste glutinous rice ball.
23:39 We call them ma tua, which kind of means sesame pile, a mound.
23:44 These have a really interesting history.
23:45 They originated in the Tang Dynasty over a thousand years ago and were served up in the
23:51 imperial kitchen.
23:53 And actually you'll find that a lot of traditional Chinese desserts, especially here in Beijing,
23:58 were originally served to the emperor.
24:00 The sort of stuff that we eat now would have been the creme de la creme back in the old
24:06 days, centuries ago when emperors ruled China.
24:10 History in a mouthful.
24:13 I'd say it's okay.
24:15 It's probably not the tastiest sesame mound I've ever had, but this isn't made for emperors
24:21 because otherwise you'll be off with your head.
24:24 Egg bacon pie.
24:26 Oh, that's pretty toasty.
24:29 The nostalgia is coming back in.
24:30 I just remember growing up in the UK and then going down to Greg's and getting a nice pasty
24:35 in the morning.
24:36 I've actually never had Burger King breakfast.
24:39 In the US, our breakfast sandwiches all come with different variations of sausage, bacon,
24:43 ham, egg, and cheese.
24:45 And they come in either a croissant, biscuit, or melt form.
24:48 We couldn't get the melt form, but we do have the croissant and the biscuit in the loaded
24:53 versions.
24:54 Loaded just means that they come with all of the toppings.
24:58 They look like they're about to burst, so I believe that's true.
25:02 In America, this is a biscuit.
25:06 The salt that just got into my...
25:08 I felt all the moisture in my body just disappear with that one bite.
25:12 That was crazy.
25:14 Here are all the different breakfast sandwich combinations that you can make at Burger King
25:18 in the US.
25:19 So you can also get the egg-normous burrito or its baby if you don't want that much of
25:24 a burrito before like 10 a.m.
25:26 We also have sweeter breakfast options like these pancakes with a sausage and the French
25:30 toast sticks.
25:33 I literally feel like I am chewing gum right now.
25:36 That is crazy how stretchy and bouncy it is right now.
25:41 They smell like they were just refried.
25:46 It's also chewy just like the pancakes, but a lot less disturbing in the mouth.
25:53 So Burger King entered China in 2005, which actually makes it late to the game.
25:59 KFC and McAd's have already been here for a decade by that point, and Chinese consumers
26:03 know what Western fast food is like already.
26:06 China cultivates a slightly different image, one of slightly more prestige, and you'll
26:12 find them mostly in major cities, top-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai, less so in
26:16 smaller cities.
26:18 I feel like in the US, Burger King has the reputation of being somewhat fresher when
26:23 it comes to ingredients.
26:25 Maybe it's considered on the more fresher side when it comes to American fast food,
26:29 even though it's probably not.
26:31 It's pretty funny.
26:32 The last Burger King has been criticized for its bad customer service, for its rude service,
26:39 and the main thing was you couldn't even complain because they didn't have a complaints
26:42 hotline.
26:43 They're kind of like, "Take it or leave it."
26:46 Convenience, speed of service, that totally depends on your specific Burger King.
26:51 Is it fast food still?
26:53 Yes.
26:54 You still get the food in around 10 to 15 minutes.
26:56 It's just, will you be getting what you ordered?
26:59 Who knows?
27:01 That's part of the fun.
27:02 I would say that Burger King, out of McDonald's and KFC, is the least localized, and so they're
27:09 cultivating maybe the image of being a gourmet burger joint, a sort of a go-between regular
27:15 fast food chain and an actual gourmet burger restaurant.
27:20 When it comes to how they adapt to local tastes, I feel like there's nothing that special on
27:25 the menu.
27:26 It's pretty normal American fast food.
27:28 They did have that one special Texas Whopper, which I've never been to Texas, so I can't
27:34 really speak on how accurate that is, but it tasted really good.
27:38 In terms of competition, Burger King is actually fifth in China behind KFC, McDonald's, Wallace
27:45 Burger and Chicken, which is a local brand, and Dico's, another local brand.
27:49 McDonald's has to be Burger King's biggest rival.
27:52 As we're filming this in early May, we've gotten word that Burger King is closing around
27:57 300 to 400 locations.
28:01 A Whopper is 27 yuan, that's $3.92.
28:06 In the US, a Whopper costs $7.89, which is a 101.3% price increase compared to China's
28:12 Whopper.
28:13 Make it a meal with a medium fry and a medium drink, and the price goes up to 40 yuan, which
28:19 is $5.80.
28:21 Add a medium fry and a drink to your order, and that brings the price up to $11.99, which
28:26 is a 106.7% increase in price.
28:29 And if you want to upgrade to large, then that's 44 yuan, which is $6.38.
28:36 Make it a large in the US, and the price goes up to $12.59, which is a 97% increase in price.
28:41 Just in general, I've found that Burger King tends to be slightly more expensive than McDonald's
28:47 and KFC.
28:50 China's Burger King doesn't share its nutritional information, but here are a few noteworthy
28:54 moments from the last couple of years.
28:56 In 2020, Burger King apologized to its customers when it was reported that some of their locations
29:02 had sold expired food.
29:04 So a Burger King in Nanchang, which is a major city in eastern China, had used expired ingredients
29:10 to make its burgers.
29:11 And get this, there was actually video footage of staff replacing the date labels on the
29:17 expired bread with new ones.
29:19 And another Burger King in exactly the same city did the same thing with expired chicken.
29:24 Burger King responded with, and I quote, "Our mismanagement has betrayed the trust of consumers
29:29 to Burger King and we express our deepest apologies for this."
29:35 This caused China to probe further into outer US fast food chains like KFC and McDonald's.
29:39 Burger King, along with McDonald's, was sued last year for using PFAS, or forever
29:44 chemicals, in their packaging.
29:46 Forever chemicals?
29:47 It's in my body forever?
29:50 Consumer reports found PFAS in the French toast sticks bags, Whopper wrappers, and chicken
29:54 nugget bags.
29:55 We ate like two out of those three things today.
29:59 Oh my god.
30:00 PFAS are chemicals that are hard to break down and last a long time, which are not good
30:05 for the environment, and PFAS exposure has been linked to health problems in humans.
30:11 Burger King has responded in saying, quote, "The Burger King brand has required that
30:15 any added perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, PFAS, be phased out from all approved,
30:23 guest-facing packaging materials globally by the end of 2025 or sooner."
30:27 That's not soon enough.
30:28 Is it in my food or not?
30:29 Is it in my food or not?
30:30 Is it like touching the food?
30:31 Is it in the gloves?
30:32 Is it in the hat?
30:33 Is it in this little crown that I've been wearing all day?
30:40 I'm so stressed out.
