00:02 - Dan Dekow here for Gonzaga Nation SI.
00:05 Second recording of the day.
00:07 First was breaking down the WCC conference schedule
00:11 being released, which means Gonzaga's schedule
00:15 in its entirety is literally right around the corner.
00:18 But other big news that just came out
00:22 within the last few hours is Drew Timmy
00:25 has signed a two-way contract with the Milwaukee Bucks.
00:29 If you've listened to our show,
00:30 followed gonzaganationsi.com
00:33 and all of our coverage with our journalists
00:35 for quite some time, you'll learn that the contract
00:38 that he signed right after the draft was an exhibit 10.
00:42 And essentially what an exhibit 10 is,
00:45 is it makes the player feel extremely valued
00:50 by the organization.
00:53 They're committing to you wanting to get to summer league.
00:56 They're gonna give you every opportunity in summer league.
00:58 And then more than likely, they're gonna want,
01:01 they're gonna give you every chance to turn that,
01:04 convert that contract either into a regular contract
01:09 or what's called a two-way contract,
01:12 which has become really popular over the last few years,
01:15 especially for undrafted rookies and or young players.
01:19 You'll get signed to a two-way contract
01:21 where essentially the team has your full rights,
01:25 but then they've got the ability to send you down
01:28 as much as they want to their G League affiliate
01:30 and bring you back up.
01:31 I mean, sometimes guys will play three games in two days
01:34 based on how the schedules match up
01:36 between the parent club, the NBA club,
01:38 and the G League team, the minor league team in this case,
01:42 to really kind of help spur player development.
01:45 It's all about player development
01:47 when you're on a two-way contract.
01:49 But again, big time congratulations go out to Drew Timmy
01:53 in regards to him kind of getting past that first hurdle
01:57 and being past an exhibit 10.
01:59 Again, an exhibit 10 is offered
02:01 when they think there's a lot of potential,
02:04 a lot of promise for you to fit into their organization
02:08 and they want to see more from you.
02:10 And typically after summer league,
02:11 depending on how you perform,
02:13 is they're going to want to see you go back to that city
02:17 and be with their coaches
02:18 and work with their coaches on a day-to-day basis.
02:21 So my guess and my estimation is that after summer league,
02:25 Drew has probably had a great six weeks
02:28 working out back in Milwaukee.
02:29 He's shown the skillset continues to evolve and develop
02:34 into what they need to see for an NBA player.
02:37 They've seen the work ethic probably in the weight room
02:40 that makes them think, you know what,
02:41 I think he's going to progress athletically
02:44 to be able to fit what we might want from him.
02:46 And it also means that they're probably picking up
02:48 and understanding the NBA game and the IQ part of it.
02:51 It's a completely different game.
02:54 You can be very dominant on the college level
02:57 in all facets and struggle with the NBA game.
03:00 There are players that struggle in college,
03:04 but they are very good NBA players
03:07 for lack of a better reason.
03:09 Many times it's the athleticism fits.
03:14 Many times they're kind of fit a specific role
03:19 within a team unbelievably well.
03:23 Sometimes, you know, they have one particular strength,
03:28 be it defense, be it rebounding, be it corner threes,
03:33 something that that organization may be lacking in
03:36 and find value in.
03:37 And if you find that perfect mesh,
03:39 you got an opportunity to carve out a nice career.
03:41 So many different ways to kind of continue to evolve
03:45 as a player once you get out of college
03:48 and kind of find your footing in professional basketball.
03:51 But Drew Timmy, big time, being able to go this early,
03:56 you know, NBA training camp's about three weeks away or so,
03:59 being able to turn that Exhibit 10 into a two-way early.
04:04 So the next goal for him would be to continue
04:06 to make progress and have a good training camp,
04:11 play some good minutes in training camp,
04:13 have some production in training camp
04:15 to the point where maybe it becomes converted
04:19 from a two-way to a regular contract at some point.
04:23 That doesn't always happen early in a career,
04:26 but that's the ultimate goal,
04:28 or that would be the ultimate goal, I'm sure, for Drew Timmy
04:32 to get that turned into a regular contract.
04:34 But good news for Drew,
04:36 he's beginning to prove his worth at the NBA level.
04:40 And for any young player who isn't drafted,
04:43 that's all you want, is you want to continue to strive
04:46 to make and take baby steps along the way
04:50 and be rewarded with it.
04:52 And I think Drew is rewarded with a two-way.
04:54 So congrats to him, look forward to seeing
04:57 how the training camp and preseason games
05:00 get going for him with the Milwaukee Bucks.
05:02 And again, like I mentioned in a pod
05:04 right after he signed that Exhibit 10,
05:06 I think it's a good opportunity.
05:08 'Cause if you look at their roster,
05:10 they don't have any true low-post scorers.
05:14 Robin Lopez, excuse me, Brooke Lopez, brother Robin,
05:18 Brooke Lopez is more of a five who steps out
05:21 and shoots a lot of threes.
05:22 And granted in the NBA game,
05:24 that's valued the ability to stretch the floor,
05:26 whether you're a four or five.
05:28 And then you look at some of their other bigs,
05:31 Myers Leonard being another one
05:33 who finished the season on the roster.
05:36 He's a five that steps out
05:37 and shoots a lot of threes as well.
05:39 They don't have a true low-post scorer.
05:41 And so with Drew, you look at it,
05:43 the fact that, hey, in certain situations,
05:46 early on in preseason,
05:47 or if it's an early regular season game,
05:50 he can be that scoring option curve ball off the bench
05:54 where maybe the other teams back up bigs,
05:57 interiors, not used to guarding guys,
05:59 catching it in a short roll, making a play.
06:01 Maybe they're not used to guarding a guy
06:03 with his variety and his array of post moves.
06:06 So good stuff.
06:08 We'll definitely be tracking it with Gonzaga Nation,
06:10 but awesome to see one more zag.
06:13 It looks like they're gonna be making some inroads
06:16 into having a regular season NBA career.
06:20 So best of luck to Drew Timmy.
06:21 We will be following him along the way.
