00:00 Welcome to the first of two editions this weekend of Football Wrap, covering everything
00:04 in the Central Highlands and Ballarat Football Leagues.
00:07 I'm David Brio and I am joined as always by Edward Holland.
00:11 G'day David, how you doing?
00:13 Alright, thanks very much.
00:14 And yeah, look, a big day already in both competitions with some surprise results in
00:24 the Ballarat League, which has had major ramifications for the upcoming finals, and a touch of controversy
00:29 in the Central Highlands Football League.
00:33 So let's talk about the Ballarat League first.
00:36 And yeah, at least one surprise result, which has turned the finals on its head.
00:41 Yeah, well, building up to this big finale, all season long, and a three-team battle,
00:46 Sunbury, Redan and East Point.
00:48 Only two spots for them available, and East Point and Redan locking in their two final
00:54 spots with Sunbury falling out.
00:56 So it's an unreal finish and probably the unexpected result out of what we were going
01:01 into this weekend with.
01:02 Yeah, it looked like it was either going to be East Point or Redan, perhaps there's been
01:06 changes, and suddenly Sunbury, the powerhouse from the East, is gone.
01:11 Yeah, you're right, it looked like East Point or Redan, neck and neck all season long.
01:16 But having both of them recording wins on Saturday means that Sunbury, who did fall
01:22 to Dali, they slip all the way from fifth down to seventh and miss out on finals.
01:28 Now whether it has any difference in the premiership race as such, it remains to be seen.
01:35 But still, it's a great result for two young sides, and it'll be a good outcome for a new
01:42 coach at Redan and an outgoing coach at East Point.
01:46 Yeah, yeah, so I'll just wrap up.
01:47 So East Point kicked the last four goals of the game against North Ballarat today to start
01:52 the storm home and get a nine-point win, which was a fantastic finish there at Mars Stadium.
01:58 And down at Sebastopol, Redan led all day long against the Borough to record a 20-point
02:04 win, and that was crucial because had Redan lost, they would have swapped places with
02:10 Sunbury, they would have been the ones out of the top six picture.
02:12 So they were in control of their own fate, and they got the four points and locked up
02:18 that final spot, but it wasn't until after the game where they realised how important
02:23 that was.
02:24 Well, those two teams basically knew they had to win, really, didn't they?
02:29 Because that's what they needed to do, and they did it, and I hope that Sunbury fell
02:35 over and bingo.
02:36 Yeah, well, that's the thing.
02:37 Sunbury was in the box seat.
02:39 They only needed one of those two sides to lose, and they would have played finals, but
02:44 neither of them did.
02:45 So they missed out, that's a four-game losing streak for the Lions to end 2023 and Travis
02:51 Hulshunside out of finals.
02:53 We'll just run through the rest of the results.
02:55 So Marcus Marshall, the two-point win against Ballarat, locking up eighth spot.
03:00 Ballarat missing a few key players, though.
03:02 And a farewell to their coach.
03:03 Yeah, so Jason Williams, he's running off to the AFL.
03:04 He got a role as a development coach at Port Adelaide, so he's been working a little bit
03:10 with Port Adelaide this season and managed to get a full-time kick there for 2024, so
03:16 congratulations to him.
03:17 And the last game of the round, Melton, a 49-point win against Lake Winnipeg.
03:22 Ryan Carter, a late inclusion, kicked one goal, but it wasn't enough.
03:26 Isaac Grant is going to be the Tony Lockett medalist with 54 goals this season.
03:30 So really, a round of upsets to go into the finals, and how does that top six end up looking?
03:37 So Melton and Dali will play off in the qualifying final.
03:40 Sebastopol and East Point will go head-to-head.
03:43 East Point fell, I think, eight points shy of Sebastopol a few weeks ago, which was full-strength
03:47 Sebastopol as well, so they'll have a lot of confidence there.
03:50 And North Bar and Redand going head-to-head in the Alderwood Nation final.
03:54 So Sebast is in the box seat, but are they?
03:57 Because there's some big news coming out of there too.
04:00 If you could just give us a bit of a taste and perhaps some more details online on Sunday.
04:05 Well, it might be one for Sunday's video, something for me to talk about tomorrow.
04:09 But just give them a hint.
04:11 Confirmation, but I'll give you a little surprise.
04:14 Apparently six of their grand final side from last year all injured today.
04:17 So one of those, James Keeble and maybe their playing coach in Luke Keel, looked a little
04:23 worse for wear on the sidelines today.
04:26 So that's one for Sunday's video.
04:29 All right, a bit more confirmation there.
04:31 Okay, so it all happened in the Ballarat Football Netball League on the football front, and
04:35 in the Central Highlands, we had the first of our finals today.
04:40 And in the qualifying final, it was Springbank, the minor premier, getting the result that
04:49 they so much desired and probably were expected to get.
04:53 They beat Bungaree by 23 points at Bunningham.
04:57 So Springbank, probably in the end too classy in the midfield, got an early break, kept
05:03 the other demons at arm's length, and from there, they now have a week off, and then
05:08 they progress to a preliminary final, a knockout game.
05:14 And in the other game, the Cardam Linton fairy tale continues.
05:18 Well, it's not a fairy tale anymore.
05:19 It's real.
05:20 It is happening.
05:21 They progress also, they beat Newland by 20 points in an elimination final at Dunstown.
05:29 A close game all the way.
05:31 A couple of occasions, Cardam Linton got away to 21-point leads, but each time Newland came
05:38 back, they refused to give the Saints any leeway.
05:43 The comment by some of the players of Cardam Linton after the game was that when they did
05:48 get those breaks, they felt that they could break the catch at that point, but Newland
05:53 was not to be denied.
05:54 But in the end, they just came up short.
05:56 And talking about short, most people will have already seen it, I'm sure, on our website
06:03 that the game was actually cut short.
06:05 So we've got another siren gate.
06:07 So not the same impact on the result, but there was confusion at the end.
06:13 Cardam kicks a goal.
06:15 They go 20 points up.
06:16 The crowd goes nuts.
06:18 Has the siren gone?
06:19 Well, the umpires say, "Yes, the siren has gone."
06:22 They call time on the game.
06:24 Game over.
06:25 Only to later find out, the timekeepers revealed there was still 2 minutes and 40-odd seconds
06:30 to go, and the siren hadn't sounded.
06:33 So the siren actually didn't sound for about another 20 minutes after the game had went.
06:38 But anyway, yes, a second version of the siren gate.
06:41 But as we learned in that previous controversial finish to the Bunion and Bungaree game, once
06:47 the umpires call time, they believe that the siren has gone, it's over.
06:55 So it's when they deem the game over.
06:57 And yeah, so it's finished.
07:00 20 points, the margin, two and a half minutes to go.
07:02 You wouldn't say it's completely out of the question, but you have to kick four goals
07:06 in that time.
07:08 You're going to be hard-pressed.
07:09 So Newell and didn't push onto it, but it would have been an interesting scenario had,
07:13 say, the margin been two kicks.
07:16 I think the players may have found themselves back out on the ground for 2 minutes and 40
07:21 seconds at the end.
07:22 But anyway, just another one.
07:24 And you can see if you want to have a look at how it all panned out, you can see it on
07:28 our live stream.
07:29 And I did make the comment, well, I didn't hear the siren.
07:33 We've got another one.
07:34 So but anyway, it didn't impact the result.
07:37 Carnham-Lytton deserved winners and their dream continues.
07:43 That's what it's all about.
07:44 Not only making the finals for the first time, but now a first win in a finals in Central
07:50 Highlands football league.
07:51 OK, so we move on tomorrow for the Central Highlands, a qualifying final at Learmonth
07:58 between Gordon and Hepburn and an elimination final, which I'll be at and we'll do having
08:04 a live stream of that game.
08:05 Elimination final at Warburra between Skipton and Dunstown.
08:10 So that'll be the knockout game.
08:12 So join us tomorrow night when we'll also have another wrap of the second day of finals
08:20 in the Central Highlands football league and also perhaps a little bit more detail on that
08:25 big breaking news coming out of Sebastopol with some injuries that could have a big say
08:31 in their finals prospects in a week's time.
08:34 So, Edward, thanks for joining us and we'll be back in about 24 hours time.
08:39 Do it all again tomorrow.
