00:00 Hey guys, it's Ash here with WatchMojo and these are the top 10 One Piece moments that
00:14 were way more brutal in the manga.
00:23 For this list, we'll be looking at scenes from the series One Piece which were way more
00:27 intense or graphic in the original manga than the anime.
00:41 Buggy kills a crew member
00:50 Buggy the Clown is one of the series' most recurring and amusing antagonists.
00:54 However, this gag villain originally had a far more serious introduction in the manga.
00:59 We first meet Buggy in Orange Town, where one of his crew members apologises for losing
01:04 a map to the Grand Line.
01:06 During his apology, the man says something which Buggy misinterprets as a shot against
01:10 his big, red and very real nose.
01:20 He chokes the man with his then-mysterious devil fruit abilities.
01:24 But while he forgives the man and lets him go in the anime, in the manga, Buggy holds
01:29 him in front of a cannon to be executed.
01:32 Buggy loves to do things flashily, but this was a little too flashy for the anime.
01:46 Sanji is backstabbed.
01:57 Sanji's fight against the invisible lion-faced man, Absalom, to rescue Nami is a bit more
02:06 disturbing in the manga.
02:08 While the similarities between the two opponents' ardent appreciation of women is unsettling
02:13 enough, the manga features a lot more blood than the anime does.
02:18 Toning down the blood in fights is par for the course for the one-piece anime, but this
02:22 moment has a story behind it.
02:25 During the fight, Sanji is backstabbed from behind by his unseen foe with a knife.
02:30 Unfortunately, this episode aired soon after the 2008 Akihabara massacre in Japan, where
02:36 a dozen people were stabbed with a dagger.
02:39 Instead, Sanji is merely kicked.
02:41 The DVD and international versions do restore some of the scene's bloodiness, though.
02:54 Luffy collects several notable battle scars on his adventure, but the way he got his most
03:08 famous one was originally cut out in the anime.
03:11 Early in the series, chapter one in the manga, Luffy is a little kid and looks up to Shanks
03:17 and his crew of pirates.
03:18 Although the anime shows Luffy and Shanks in a bar, and Luffy asking to join Shanks'
03:23 crew, the manga had a scene before this.
03:34 In it, Luffy declares that he'll prove he's tough enough to join their crew, by giving
03:39 himself the scar below his eye with a knife.
03:42 In the original anime episode, Luffy lacks the bandage from his injury.
03:46 The scene was animated properly in a TV special, though.
03:57 Bellamy catches a cheater.
04:05 Bellamy the hyena may think he's much stronger than he is at first, but his sadistic and
04:10 cruel attitude is still plenty threatening.
04:13 He's introduced playing cards with a pirate named Roshio.
04:17 When Roshio wins, Bellamy grabs his hand and squeezes, accusing him of cheating in the
04:23 anime.
04:36 He still makes the accusation in the manga, but he does it after stabbing Roshio's hand
04:41 to the table.
04:42 Additionally, before throwing Roshio out the window, as he does in the anime, the manga
04:47 features Bellamy and his crewmate, Sarcas, break a bottle of alcohol on him and light
04:52 him on fire.
04:53 Not only is this more brutal, but it also adds more tension to Bellamy's first confrontation
04:59 with Luffy.
05:07 Bartolomeo is the Straw Hat Pirate's number one – in
05:25 universe – fan.
05:26 However, he's also a gangster-tinned pirate, so he's not exactly a peaceful guy.
05:32 When we first learn of his fanboyism, Bartolomeo overhears a man bad-mouthing Luffy for failing
05:38 to save his brother.
05:40 And Bartolomeo takes that personally, like any of us would.
05:53 Flattening the man against a wall with his powers, Bartolomeo explains how he came to
05:58 worship Luffy while holding on to the man's tongue.
06:01 In the anime, he threatens the guy's taste organ with a knife, but in the manga, he pierces
06:06 it fully.
06:08 And then Bartolomeo does some other violent things to him that were way too extreme for
06:12 even the manga.
06:22 When the Straw Hats go to Little Garden, they
06:35 and some dueling giants on the island are captured by Mr. Three.
06:39 The crafty bounty hunter encases them all in some slowly creeping wax that will eventually
06:45 turn them all into a pirate-themed wax museum.
06:48 To escape their predicament, Zoro declares that he's willing to cut off his own legs
06:53 to escape the trap and take the fight to Mr. Three and the rest of Baroqueworks.
07:02 Thankfully, Luffy arrives with backup and Zoro doesn't have to go through with it.
07:10 Well, mostly.
07:11 He's already got halfway through.
07:13 The anime shows blood dripping down, but the manga shows the grisly mess he's made of
07:18 his legs in more detail.
07:20 It's amazing Zoro is so nonchalant.
07:37 Or Katakuri destroys Luffy's torso.
07:49 Luffy's fight with Katakuri is one of the most intense and awesome bouts in the entire
07:53 series – not only because of the intense action, but also because of the mutual respect
07:58 that develops between them.
08:00 Unfortunately, Katakuri's awful, terrible, no-good little sister, Flampe, shoots Luffy
08:06 in the leg with a numbing dart, leading to Luffy slipping and getting hit by a devastating
08:12 attack from Katakuri.
08:22 While the anime does show a lot of blood, it's practically to cover up the damage
08:26 Luffy takes in the manga.
08:28 Originally, you can see Katakuri's weapon going clean through Luffy, and a huge chunk
08:33 missing from Luffy's midsection.
08:35 Chopper is an incredible doctor, being able to patch that up.
08:59 One Piece backstories tend to get pretty tragic and pretty dark, so several are subject to
09:04 censorship.
09:05 The first is Nami's backstory.
09:08 When the Fishman Arlong and his crew take over Nami's village, they force the villagers
09:12 to pay them protection money.
09:15 When Nami's adopted mother, Belmyr, doesn't have enough for herself, Nami, and Nami's
09:20 sister, Nojiko, she offers herself to protect them.
09:23 Her death is traumatic and tragic regardless of the version.
09:40 But in the manga, Arlong points his gun at Belmyr's face instead of her chest.
09:46 It's brutal either way, yet we can see how a mother getting shot there, in front of her
09:51 kids, would have been a bit too dark.
10:02 Another, straw hat backstory, this one details how Sanji and his mentor, Zeff, were both
10:29 stranded on a small island with little food to survive.
10:33 In both versions, Zeff loses one of his legs to save Sanji.
10:37 However, the "how" differs between mediums.
10:40 In the anime, Zeff's leg gets caught in a chain while saving Sanji at sea, forcing
10:45 him to remove it.
11:01 He then gives Sanji all his food so he can survive.
11:04 But, in the manga, Zeff has both legs when they reach the island, and he still gives
11:09 Sanji all the food.
11:11 Zeff cuts off his own leg and eats it to survive.
11:15 Self-cannibalism isn't exactly a family-friendly topic, so we can understand the censorship
11:20 in this case.
11:49 Whitebeard Loses Face
12:03 The death of Ace made a lot of people angry.
12:06 Most of all, Ace's adoptive dad, Whitebeard.
12:10 The legendary pirate is quick to pursue Ace's killer, Akinu, to give him an epic beatdown.
12:15 However, despite taking a quake punch to the face, the dogged admiral retaliates with a
12:21 magma punch.
12:31 In the anime, this merely burns off a portion of Whitebeard's signature crescent moustache.
12:36 But the manga went way more brutal.
12:39 Whitebeard doesn't just lose half of his stache, he loses half of his face.
12:44 After such a gut-wrenching death, we can see why the animators toned down this gory injury.
12:49 Still, it's too bad that Whitebeard looks like slightly less of a beast for fighting
12:54 on such a grisly wound.
