00:00 The Star Wars franchise has been around for a whopping 45 years, with 11 live-action films
00:04 hitting cinemas during that time plus the animated Clone Wars feature.
00:08 That's quite a lot of movie, and yet there still hasn't been enough screen time to
00:11 give every tiny detail the attention it deserves.
00:14 A recent Reddit thread discussed that very subject, with Star Wars fans bringing up various
00:18 details that were either explored too little or not explored at all.
00:22 I'm Emile from WhatCulture and these are 10 Star Wars Details That Are Almost Never
00:26 Mentioned.
00:27 10. The Impact of Owen and Beru's Death on Luke
00:31 The final scene of Revenge of the Sith shows Obi-Wan Kenobi handing an infant Luke Skywalker
00:36 to Owen and Beru Lars, who go on to raise the boy like he's their own.
00:39 In A New Hope, Owen and Beru are murdered by Imperial soldiers, with Luke stumbling
00:43 across the grisly sight of their charred corpses after returning from a chat with Obi-Wan.
00:47 Though Luke is visibly shaken when he discovers what has happened to Owen and Beru, he immediately
00:52 sets out on the path to becoming a Jedi Knight.
00:54 And the impact that their deaths surely had on him is never mentioned again.
00:58 Luke seems sadder about Obi-Wan's death, a guy who he barely knows, than he does about
01:03 the deaths of a couple who for all intents and purposes were his real parents.
01:07 With their deaths being so brutal, you'd imagine the image of their crispy bodies would
01:11 gnaw at his insides constantly, especially considering he never got to say goodbye.
01:16 Or thank you.
01:17 Or anything.
01:18 From a certain point of view, it's quite cold.
01:20 Number 9 - How Palpatine built a Star Destroyer fleet without anybody noticing.
01:26 How?
01:27 How do I even?
01:28 Let's do it anyway.
01:29 Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker did such a bad job of explaining things that you had
01:33 to go and play Fortnite if you wanted more context of the story.
01:37 Even when the movie did explain things these explanations were lazy, such as Poe's regularly
01:41 memed line about how Palpatine has risen from the grave, "Somehow, Palpatine has returned."
01:47 Thank you, JJ.
01:48 Clears things up.
01:49 Something else the movie doesn't explain is how exactly Palpatine managed to build
01:52 a massive fleet of souped-up Star Destroyers, a hugely important detail that the movie glosses
01:57 over entirely.
01:58 Where did he get the materials?
02:00 How did he equip each ship with the planet-killing laser?
02:02 How on exegol did he finance this whole venture?
02:06 With this fleet being the centrepiece of Palpatine's plan, it's unforgivable that the movie doesn't
02:10 even try to explain it.
02:12 And though extra backstory is available for those who want to do some homework, it's
02:15 a total head scratch for folks who only watch the films.
02:20 DROIDS CAN POSSESS HUMAN LEVELS OF SENTIENCE Some of the most beloved characters in Star
02:25 Wars are droids, with the likes of C-3PO, R2-D2 and BB-8 delivering many highlight moments
02:30 in the movies they appear in.
02:32 Despite this popularity, though, something the movies never really discuss is that droids
02:36 can possess incredibly high levels of sentience, and yet they're often treated as emotionless,
02:41 disposable or even just as jokes.
02:43 Like C-3PO in Return of the Jedi, who seems terrified at the prospect of working for Jabba,
02:48 and even expresses self-doubt, wondering aloud if he did something to warrant Luke leaving
02:52 him behind.
02:53 What could it possibly have come over Master Luke?
02:56 Is it something I did?
02:57 Oh, 3PO, come here, give me a hug.
02:59 If you can feel it.
03:01 In that same movie, we even see a Gonk Droid screaming with pain while being tortured,
03:05 which makes you think about all the other times droids have been damaged or mistreated,
03:09 and how they must have felt.
03:10 Though the concept of droid rights was touched on in Solo A Star Wars Story, it's an issue
03:15 the movies have never done justice, despite the crucial role various droids have played
03:19 in almost every single film.
03:21 Droid rights now!
03:23 7.
03:24 Ewoks are highly skilled fighters
03:26 Mention the Ewoks to a casual Star Wars fan and they'll probably start talking about
03:30 how adorable they are, which is fair enough.
03:32 Just look at that fluffy little face, it's all...
03:34 But look, something people never talk about, and something that, if their reputation as
03:38 lovable plush toys is anything to go by, the movies haven't made clear, is that the Ewoks
03:42 are among the most skilled fighters in the Star Wars galaxy.
03:47 Just look at how they completely outclass the technologically superior Empire in Return
03:51 of the Jedi.
03:52 They coordinate their ambush outside the shield generator perfectly, starting off by using
03:56 R2 and 3PO as a distraction, and following this up by forcing the Imperial troopers to
04:00 split up and run into the woods, right where the Ewoks want them.
04:04 And that's not to mention how bloodthirsty they are, with the little beasts fully intending
04:08 to dine on Han until 3PO's magic convinces them otherwise.
04:12 The Ewoks look fairly harmless, and the majority of their scenes are played in a lighthearted
04:15 way, which greatly distracts from their brutality and combat efficiency.
04:20 Teddy bears, they most certainly are not.
04:22 6.
04:23 The destruction of the Death Star brought the Empire's followers closer together
04:27 The destruction of the first Death Star at the end of A New Hope was a huge victory for
04:32 the Rebel Alliance, but if you look at it from the Empire's point of view, then it was
04:35 nothing short of an act of terrorism.
04:37 The movies never touch on the fact Luke murdered millions of innocent people when he blew up
04:41 the planet-killing machine.
04:42 All those janitors, technicians, what about the chefs, who were only working for the Empire
04:46 because it was a job, or because they were too scared to leave?
04:49 Further still, it's highly likely that this mass murder actually brought people from the
04:53 Empire closer together, and possibly even galvanised the additional support for the
04:57 Empire across the galaxy.
04:59 Though this angle was somewhat explored in 2017's Star Wars Battlefront II game, the
05:04 movies never take the time to ponder such interesting details, with the ramifications
05:08 of the Rebels' victories never being looked at from the opposing point of view.
05:12 It almost makes you want a Taken 2-style spin-off, where the father of a murdered Death Star
05:16 employee hunts down Luke to enact his revenge.
05:19 Go on Disney, you know you want to.
05:21 5.
05:22 The Jedi are incredibly rare mythical beings The Jedi are prominently featured throughout
05:27 the entire Skywalker saga, from Obi-Wan and Anakin in the prequels, to Luke in the originals
05:31 and Rey in the sequels.
05:33 This ends up giving off the impression that there's a Jedi on every street corner, making
05:37 it easy to forget that in actual fact, they are mythical beings, and that the vast majority
05:42 of people in the galaxy have never actually seen one.
05:49 Because we follow one of these lightsaber-wielding heroes for each of the nine core movies, it
05:52 does feel they're way more common than they actually are.
05:55 Remember, the Jedi Order is fairly reclusive during the prequel era, and pretty much extinct
06:00 for the next six movies.
06:02 4.
06:03 The dark side of the Force isn't inherently evil Force users are divided into two camps,
06:08 the Jedi and the Sith, or the light and the dark.
06:12 The movies draw a firm line between these two camps, telling us that the dark side is
06:15 evil, and that light, well, is right.
06:18 Jedi want that on a t-shirt.
06:20 While most on-screen evidence points to this being true, a notion that isn't fleshed
06:24 out is that the dark side in isolation isn't necessarily evil.
06:27 Rather, it's the users of the dark side who abuse its power for their own selfish
06:31 or chaotic intentions.
06:33 Look at someone like Count Dooku.
06:35 Though he wields the dark side of the Force, he hasn't let emotions like anger and hatred
06:40 corrupt him, like they have for so many other Sith.
06:43 Instead, he uses his dark side abilities with control.
06:45 He's clearly far more level-headed than the likes of Vader and the Emperor, proof that
06:50 dark side users need not become moustache-twirling megalomaniacs.
06:54 And then there's Dark Vectivus, who also practiced the dark side but never let it consume
06:58 him and could save off that destructive temptation.
07:01 Despite what the movies might tell us, wielding the dark side doesn't automatically mean
07:04 that a person is evil or that they will always succumb to the lure of power.
07:08 It just depends on the person.
07:10 3.
07:11 How Maz Kanata Acquired Luke's Lightsaber When Maz Kanata pulls Luke Skywalker's blue
07:16 lightsaber from a box and hands it to Finn in The Force Awakens, Han Solo asks her where
07:20 she got it.
07:21 Her response?
07:22 A good question, for another time.
07:24 In hindsight, her refusal to give an explanation feels startlingly similar to Paul's "Somehow,
07:29 Palpatine Returned".
07:30 Sorry, I can't even say it anymore.
07:32 And though this particular detail arguably isn't as important, it's nonetheless frustrating
07:37 that the movies never reveal how Maz acquired a lightsaber that was presumed lost deep within
07:41 Cloud City.
07:42 Some fans have headcanonised that because Maz was a pirate queen, she acquired it via
07:45 her connections to the smuggling world.
07:48 After all, she's lived a long life, so had plenty of time to stumble across it.
07:51 Other Star Wars media has discussed the lightsaber's post-Luke fate too, revealing that a random
07:56 Ugnaught found it on Cloud City and kept it from being destroyed.
07:59 But as for how it made its way into Maz's hands, that's a good question, for another
08:03 time.
08:04 2.
08:05 Dismemberment makes Force users less powerful
08:07 Though the whole midichlorian thing has been largely swept under the rug in recent years,
08:11 it's still part of Star Wars canon.
08:14 Midichlorians which live inside the body's cells are linked to Force potential, so the
08:18 higher the midichlorian count, the more Force potential an individual will have.
08:22 So what would happen if that count was suddenly reduced?
08:25 In a 2005 interview, George Lucas himself spoke about that idea, discussing how dismemberment
08:31 would affect a Jedi or a Sith's Force abilities, stating Anakin actually became less powerful
08:36 after Obi-Wan chopped him into bits.
08:38 Lucas went on to explain that the Emperor viewed Luke as a primo version of Anakin,
08:42 simply because his body was more intact, and this was why he offered the younger Skywalker
08:45 the chance to join him.
08:47 Despite this idea coming straight from the horse's mouth, not a single Star Wars film
08:50 has ever delved into it, which is bizarre considering how the franchise's two main
08:54 characters both suffered dismemberment at various points.
08:58 1.
08:59 The severity of the Republic's Geonosis defeat The arena battle in Attack of the Clones
09:03 is a terrific spectacle, but the ramifications of its outcome are severely underplayed throughout
09:08 the rest of the prequels.
09:09 To recap, Jedi Master Mace Windu leads a strike team into the Geonosis arena to rescue Anakin,
09:14 Obi-Wan and Padme, only to be met by an army of battle droids.
09:18 An all-out brawl ensues and many Jedi are slaughtered, with the survivors being rescued
09:22 by Yoda, who whisks them away with some rather handy gunships.
09:26 Despite hundreds of Jedi entering the arena, there's only a handful of them left when
09:29 Yoda shows up, meaning a vast majority of what was supposed to be the most formidable
09:33 fighting force in the galaxy was killed within minutes.
09:36 Even worse, Mace tells Yoda before the battle, "I'll take what Jedi we have left",
09:41 implying the ones in the arena were all the Jedi that remained.
09:44 Weirdly though, the rest of the prequels fail to convey how catastrophic it was that so
09:48 many Jedi died in such a needless manner.
09:50 I'm afraid to say there's not much we can do about this now, but let's just hope
09:55 that Palpatine somehow doesn't return.
