Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou remained tight-lipped on transfers despite talks continuing with Nottingham Forest over the signing of Brennan Johnson.

Spurs travel to Burnley on Saturday and will be without Giovani Lo Celso with a quad injury, but are braced for a busy end to transfer deadline day with activity expected in both incomings and outgoings.

00:00 Is the team losing head of the game?
00:11 From the other night I think the only one that's missing is Gio. He's got a bit of a
00:18 quad strain as well, we took him off at half time. It's nothing too serious but obviously
00:22 we've got the international break coming up so we're hoping not too long after that everyone
00:28 else got through and is available.
00:31 So I have to dive straight into transfer, I know you've got the flyer.
00:36 That first one was just the fuller buster wasn't it? It was just like, you're just softening
00:39 me up.
00:40 I was going to say something else, I thought Vicky was going to end like that. Brendan
00:45 Johnson's clubs are still talking, I know you always said that you can't never replace
00:49 Harry Kane, that's someone who's not a like for like but exciting, can you shed a little
00:53 bit on that?
00:54 Not really, I mean it's again I'm kind of in a position where obviously other people
01:00 are in control of those matters, incomings, outgoings and again I'm not really bought
01:06 into the loop until things are concluded. So for me to talk about potential players
01:12 when that's in or out, when it may or may not happen, I just don't think it's my place
01:19 to talk about it. We're obviously, the countdown clock says nine or ten hours, we'll find everything
01:26 out in the next short period and we'll go from there.
01:30 I'll be outside at midnight. If you do get one or two in though today, looking at the
01:36 players who have started so well, Destinique, Guillermo, will you be happy at all?
01:44 The ones we've brought in so far, I think the evidence shows that they've all been really
01:49 good contributors for us and that's what you look for. So I said, whether it's Vicario
01:55 or Matters or Micky Van Der Veen, Mano Solomon and even Destinique coming back, coming in
02:02 sort of for his first year, I'm really pleased and that's what you're looking for because
02:07 obviously it's not just about bringing players in but bringing players in and they are contributing
02:12 straight away, it's probably a good indicator that the business we've done so far has been
02:17 good but again, until you get to the end of the window and you know exactly where it all
02:22 falls and we're into the season, we won't know the exact outcome of everything.
02:28 There's clearly a number of players who need to move out as well, maybe loan or permanent.
02:32 You know the squad you've got now. Some are turning down moves and aren't moving. If they
02:39 do stay, Anj, and it looks like some might, what's your plan integrating them back into
02:43 the squad because it is a big squad isn't it? What's your plans on some of those? You
02:48 don't see a future.
02:50 No one's not been integrated into the squad. There's no one that hasn't been training with
02:53 the team. So I'm not sort of isolating anyone at the moment. As you said, players have got
02:59 their own reasons for making these decisions but ultimately come the deadline today, we're
03:05 going to have to name a 25-man list and we've got more than that at the moment. So some
03:09 people are going to miss out. I guess again it's sort of up to them to decide what the
03:16 next step is.
03:17 But from my perspective at the moment, like I said, we haven't excluded anyone from training.
03:22 The numbers are manageable right now. Whilst they're manageable, I don't see the need for
03:28 us to do anything different to what we have been doing.
03:31 How pleased are you with the changes this summer?
03:44 It's been encouraging and promising I guess is the word I'm trying to define it as. We've
03:56 done a lot of changes this year. We've changed coaching staff, we've changed the way we train,
04:01 we've changed the way we play, we've changed personnel, some significant personnel. Within
04:07 that context you know that whenever there's such major change that it takes a while for
04:14 things to really feel comfortable for everybody, the whole club. Because even me, I'm still
04:19 new so the way we all work. So within that context I've been really encouraged by what
04:26 I've seen. The players are really trying to play the way we want to. They're showing real
04:31 character and we're using the word resilience to adjust and not let the fact that so many
04:40 changes have happened to affect our performance. Our performance has been fairly consistent.
04:47 Because it's very easy for the players to say, "Well, there's so many changes," to have excuses
04:50 as to why we wouldn't start well. We've had four official games so far and three of them
04:57 have been away from home. So it's not exactly been an easy start for this group of players.
05:01 So I like the fact that they've shown that character. But I also know we've got a long
05:07 way to go. We're only very much at the beginning and we've still got plenty of challenges ahead.
05:11 Despite the defeat at Fulham, high important was Rich Argerson's goal for his confidence
05:16 levels and his role in this team looking forward?
05:20 I guess because everyone talks about it and I'm not in Richie's head and I'm not in the
05:25 players' heads to really know how they feel. But I guess it stops people talking about
05:30 the fact that he didn't score. But I was happy with his contribution. I already said, I thought
05:36 probably the other night was probably he wasn't at the same level that he has in the other
05:42 three games. But he gets a goal so people sort of focus on the goal. But I'm still looking
05:46 at contribution to the team and I still think there are areas that Richie needs to improve
05:52 for us to keep improving as a team. But he's not the only one. All of them are in that
05:56 boat. But anything that gives a player confidence, belief is great. Particularly for strikers
06:02 I get that because like I said that's what people focus on. But I wasn't unhappy with
06:07 Richie before he scored the goal.
06:09 What's the biggest threat you expect from Burnley?
06:14 A couple. I mean I really love the way that Vincent Cappini went about tackling the championship.
06:21 It's a really tough league. Everyone knows that. And I thought the way his team played
06:27 and really had a clear identity I thought was outstanding. And looking at their first
06:32 two games that's how they're going to tackle the Premier League. So you know that there's
06:35 belief within that squad in the manager and in their methods. They're a hardworking team.
06:42 They're a very fit side. You look at all the running measurements during the week and they're
06:48 up there. So at home really good pressing team. So we're going to get challenged for
06:53 sure. I mean playing away in Premier League is always tough anyway. But it'll be a good
06:57 challenge for us and we're going to need to be at our sort of current best, the best we
07:03 can be right now to overcome that. Because they're going to work hard. They're going
07:09 to press us and we're going to have to be really brave and believe in our football to
07:12 get through it.
07:13 Thank you.
07:14 Hi, how are you?
07:15 Good mate.
07:16 It's the third away game in a row. Sorry, third away game in four. I was speaking to
07:23 West Ham manager David Moyes who kind of questioned why you had to play three away games. Do you
07:28 feel it's a bit unfair that you've only had one home game so far and it's the start of
07:32 the season so tough?
07:33 It is what it is. I mean there's no point sort of. I assume these things are done because
07:45 of some, I don't know, fancy algorithm or something. I assume it's a random thing or
07:52 some process behind it. We got dealt with what we got dealt with at some point. I'm
07:56 sure that flips and we'll obviously get the equal amount of home games. Obviously the
08:00 Cup game being away sort of exacerbates that because like I said we've had three games
08:06 away from home in a week, four out of our first five. And our first home game was a
08:12 really good game. You want to sort of grow on that. But for a team that's in transition
08:17 there's no greater way to find or reveal character than making it tough. So in many respects
08:25 if we get through this spell well it's good. I think it helps us build some real strength
08:32 within the sort of unity of the team.
08:34 You've been linked with several players. You've always spoken about Brennan Johnson, Colley
08:38 Gallagher is another, Roy Kelly is another. You sat here about a month ago when you first
08:43 met us and said that you love a rebuild. Is this the kind of idea you had when you were
08:48 sat here a month ago how Spurs would look now in terms of a rebuild?
08:53 Well yeah I mean it's part of the process yeah. But rebuilds don't happen sort of. The
08:59 rebuild is something that happens over a period of time and you have to overcome certain hurdles
09:05 and certain landmarks along the way. One is change of personnel so that's obviously something.
09:13 Then change of methodology, change. There's so many things that are in that. So the rebuild
09:17 that I love is one that takes time and like I said we're still at the beginnings of it.
09:21 So where we're at at the moment is where we're at. And every sort of team I've been at has
09:26 been different. There have been different challenges. How much the team changes in one
09:30 window, how much of a change it's been from the previous regime. There's all these kind
09:36 of other factors that go into it. But we're still, I'm at pains to sort of keep saying
09:43 it but we're still at very much the infancy of what I want to try and create in terms
09:49 of the team and the club we want to be. So notwithstanding that we understand that we
09:56 still need to perform and get results so that in my experience that's what the only thing
10:03 that accelerates that process is if you can get some real belief. Because with every performance,
10:08 with every result, whatever resistance or barriers there are slowly get chipped away.
10:13 This club has had some big name managers, real historic managers down the years. But
10:19 you have achieved something already that none of them have achieved. No one has ever had
10:23 a pop song sung about them. Firstly Robbie Williams do you know him? And what did you
10:30 think when you heard Robbie Williams change the lyrics of one of his most famous songs?
10:35 That's one of the most sort of backhanded sort of underwhelming compliments I've ever
10:41 had. You've had some unbelievably fantastic managers, big names, successful. And then
10:47 there's you Ang. And then if I ever heard of Robbie Williams, where have I been living
10:53 mate? I mean seriously, look I love Robbie Williams, I think he's brilliant, he's a great
11:01 entertainer. He made a song brilliant, I think it came off the back of one of our supporters.
11:09 It's great, the alternative is they make up songs about you that are less than complimentary.
11:14 So I'll take it for what it is. But yeah, thanks for that mate. I'll just float out
11:21 of here feeling good about myself.
11:22 I'll rephrase the question next time.
11:24 Thank you, that's fine mate.
11:25 Previous managers at the club have occasionally spoken about having club signings that have
11:38 come in, players that maybe the club really wanted and I don't know if it's compromise
11:42 or what they've gone for. With your system of being such specific kind of players that
11:47 you need, can that happen with you? Or are they very much the players that come in that
11:51 you want?
11:52 Yeah, I don't know. I mean I don't know sort of club signings, what that means. I mean
11:57 I think I would never sort of approve a signing that I didn't think was going to fit into
12:05 sort of the way we want to play. I guess if it's at a younger level, at an academy level,
12:11 of course I think then it is the clubs. But I think when you've got a senior manager and
12:17 you appoint him and you give him the responsibility of sort of charting a course ahead, you've
12:21 got to give him the players that will suit the way he wants to play. I think the evidence
12:30 so far, like I said, with the players we've brought in is that they've all made an impact
12:34 which shows that the brief is there, that we're looking for players who will play the
12:39 football, will fit into the system I want to play. So I think, like I said, I can't
12:47 refer to the past but the only signings, like I said, that I wouldn't have a massive say
12:51 over would be the signings at a club, at academy level or younger level where rightly so the
12:59 club, if it identifies somebody who they think has real potential for the future, then they
13:03 should go about doing that.
13:04 What's the kind of balance, if you don't mind me asking, between the ones, a player
13:08 that you will say, 'I really want him' and ones that maybe the scouting department
13:12 come to you and say, 'I really want him'?
13:14 Yeah, there's the ones I really want and the ones the scouting department put to me
13:17 that I really want. There's no differentiation, mate. There's nothing, there's like, the
13:22 scouting department should work hand in hand. And look, again, this is one of the things
13:28 where we are very, very much in the infancy of, like, that's one of the parts of, that
13:35 we really haven't really, you know, this window's fair say. It's been an unusual
13:40 one because of, you know, where the club is at the moment in terms of personnel in that
13:45 area. So, you know, moving forward though, there would be some more clearer processes
13:51 within that. But again, like I said, the evidence we have so far is the players were brought
13:55 in and you can see that, you know, they've been aligned with kind of my vision for the
14:00 club.
14:01 A lot of players linked, especially today, seem to be homegrown. How kind of, I don't
14:05 want to say restricted, but how much you've got to have that in one mind, the amount of
14:08 foreign players and homegrown players?
14:09 Yeah, it is. It's a balance. I think it's important because it's not just about sort
14:13 of this window, it's where you're going to find yourself in the next couple of windows.
14:18 There's got to be a strategy behind it. You know, you've got some under-21 players
14:21 at the moment who, you know, next couple of years will not be able to be fit under that
14:26 criteria. So I'm really keen on sort of building a team here. So we don't want to see too much,
14:32 you know, as much movement as we have, say this window in the next two or three. So to
14:36 do that, you're trying to hopefully build a squad that, you know, won't require too
14:41 many major adjustments. And part of that is, you know, knowing that we need a sort of homegrown
14:46 quota so we can fill that in, whether that's with players coming through our own academy
14:51 or, you know, within the league, then I think it's important.
14:55 To ask Willem, obviously for the first time here, I can't think I saw a really great start.
15:02 What was your message brought to the players after?
15:06 Look, I think I said after the game, you know, the players were disappointed. You're always
15:12 disappointed when you don't achieve, you know, the outcome. And in a cup game, that's obviously
15:18 means you're out of competition. But like I said, I really liked, again, their resilience.
15:26 We're playing away from home against a Premier League team, obviously made a lot of changes,
15:29 which made it difficult for the group. A lot of guys hadn't played significant minutes,
15:35 which is always challenging. And I like the way they hung in there for the whole game.
15:39 And we've still got to build on that. So, but ultimately, you know, they were disappointed,
15:45 which you want, but also understanding that, again, like I said, we're at the beginnings
15:50 of a process and it won't be the only hiccup. There'll be plenty of hiccups, you know, there'll
15:55 be plenty of challenges along the way. It's how we kind of react to that and how we respond
16:03 to that that's going to be the key.
16:05 How much are you looking forward to in this period, like once the transfer window is over
16:10 and you know...
16:11 Oh, I can't wait.
16:12 Yeah.
16:13 Don't lie, you love it, mate.
16:14 You know that you've got and there isn't that uncertainty.
16:20 To a certain extent, but I still like, you know, I think anyone who kind of knows me
16:24 and the way I build teams, I still like players sort of being on edge. I would hate for anyone
16:28 to think, okay, we've got through the window, I'm comfortable now, because I certainly won't
16:31 let anyone feel that way. We've still got a lot to achieve. We've still got a lot to
16:34 work on. We've still got a lot to push each other on. The players, you know, whatever
16:38 group we settle with, there'll be competition within them. As we know, you know, between
16:44 now and sort of new year, we're obviously out of the cup now. So, you know, we've got
16:50 just a league to concentrate on and every game is going to be important. So performance
16:54 in every game is going to be important. I want competition for places. So there'll never
16:59 be a feeling of comfort within the group, not from myself or anyone else. But in terms
17:05 of maybe the uncertainty around people's futures, maybe that settles them. But I hate, you know,
17:10 like I said, I won't allow anyone to think, okay, well, I'm sitting there for a couple
17:14 of months so I can just sit back and relax. It's not the way I kind of work, you know.
17:19 There'll always be a sense of edge around everything we do.
17:22 Is that a bit of a different challenge for you, obviously, coming from Salah's team?
17:25 You've always been competing on multiple fronts. This time, so January, there is just the one.
17:30 Is that something you've got to adapt to as a coach as well?
17:32 No, it's not the first time in my career, mate. And, you know, ultimately, it doesn't
17:36 really matter. What my process, the thought process for all these things is the same.
17:41 I want to build a team that gives it a platform to be successful in whatever we do. So through
17:48 that process, like I said, there's going to be some ups, downs. We're going to get, you
17:52 know, we're going to have some not good days, hopefully more good days than bad days. And
17:56 how we respond to the bad days are going to be just as important as how we do when things
18:00 are going well. And, no, it's not unusual, man. I've been, you know, wherever I've worked,
18:06 yeah, Celtic was probably the unusual one because they're always in every tournament
18:11 and deep in every tournament. So you end up playing 60 games a year, irrespective of sort
18:16 of how you go. So that was probably more unique than this situation.
18:21 Will Hugo Lloris be in the team for a left-footed season?
18:40 Yeah, no, like I said, I've only been here a couple of months and Hugo's been excellent
18:45 throughout the whole process. There's no doubt he's had an outstanding career and contribution
18:51 to this football club. He's been the captain for quite a long time and, yeah, he's been
18:58 very professional, obviously working with Birchie and the other goalkeepers. You know,
19:03 he's sort of been helping the others, you know, obviously Vic being the new keeper as
19:08 well. So, yeah, I have nothing negative to say about him. And I wouldn't, and even to
19:17 be honest, I'm in no position to do that anyway because I've only literally just walked in
19:22 the door and he's been here a long time. And I think when that happens, I think you allow
19:26 people to kind of, you know, be themselves and be who they are and not sort of judge
19:35 that in any way. But there's been nothing, like I said, other than sort of him being
19:41 very, very professional about everything.
19:43 How do you view, I guess, sort of long-term this kind of career path for him going through
19:55 it? Do you feel like this could be a loan that helps him?
19:59 Yeah, definitely. That's why we sent him out, you know. I mean, I thought, you know, Dane
20:03 was really good with us during pre-season. The reason I held on to him, there was a lot
20:06 of interest in him right from the beginning, you know, when I got here. But the reason
20:10 I kept him with us for so long was, you know, I was really encouraged with the way he was
20:13 training and the way he was developing. But there was always going to come a point where
20:18 with young players, you need to decide, you know, and I've always felt after a certain
20:23 time that the best kind of development for young players is to play. And you have to
20:28 make a decision, is he going to play enough for us now to help him continue to develop
20:33 and become a first team player for this football club? Or would it be better off, you know,
20:39 going somewhere where, and let's face it, I mean, Ipswich are a good side, they play
20:43 good football, they've started the season well, he's going to have to fight for his
20:45 position there as well. It's not like anything's going to be given. And we know the Championship's
20:49 a tough league. So if he can go there, play a significant number of games, you know, perform
20:55 well, then I think for us that's exactly what we want from these kind of, you know,
21:01 long periods and then come pre-season next year, hopefully he's, you know, he's advanced
21:07 where he then becomes, you know, somebody who is competing for a first team squad.
21:18 Thanks for playing.
21:26 Thanks.
21:36 Thanks.
