00:00 TV star Jeremy Vine has called for a change in the urban traffic system and has said the
00:05 overtaking of bicycles by cars in big cities should be banned.
00:10 The popular TV personality says the decrease in speed limits in towns and cities has reached
00:15 a point where it's more practical for motorists to make way for cyclists.
00:20 Vine who is an avid cyclist also proposed that drivers pull over to allow cyclists to
00:25 pass if they see them in their rearview mirrors.
00:27 We went out on the streets of Manchester to find out your thoughts.
00:32 No, no, no, no. I don't like Jeremy Vine anyway but with regards to that I think there's
00:37 enough room on the roads for all of us but I don't think that the cars should make way
00:42 for the bikes and stuff like that. I know that's a controversial thing but that's just
00:45 my opinion. So, no.
00:49 The thing is we're having to pay car tax, we're having to pay this, we're having to
00:53 pay that. You know, if there's bumps in the road and stuff we've got to swerve, bikes
00:57 have got to swerve. I think there's an equal amount of space on a road for both but I don't
01:04 see that we should give cyclists precedent over that.
01:07 I think cyclists have got to share in part of what the motoring world is as well because
01:11 they do tend to think that they have the right of way, which they have in certain circumstances
01:18 but I think they take that to the limit and don't consider the driver. So it's all about
01:23 the cyclist but not the driver. And there's all these cyclist lanes but there's not many
01:27 people in Manchester that I can see that are cycling. Everybody seems to be using cars
01:32 and yet all these cycling lanes are being put in, taking traffic down to a single file.
01:38 I do appreciate that they're trying to not have all the vehicles coming into the city
01:43 centres but I do think cyclists also have a responsibility.
01:48 I mean I think they should have proper cycle lanes like they do in Holland. I think everywhere
01:54 there should be cycle lanes and people should be encouraged to cycle more I think. Healthier
02:01 and better for the environment. You know they've got as much right to the road as the motorists
02:06 even though they don't pay tax but they've probably got a car and they pay tax on that,
02:11 road tax.
02:12 Oh I don't agree being a driver. No, I think cyclists should stick to the cycle lanes and
02:19 we can go past them easily. I don't think we should wait for them. I mean for pedestrians
02:25 yes but not for cyclists because they don't really obey the rules of the road anyway.
02:30 They go through red lights quite often and as I say sometimes they cycle along outside
02:37 the cycle path which is really annoying.
02:39 I think it isn't fair to expect drivers to do that because everyone's trying to get to
02:42 the same place at the end of the day but I think sometimes obviously it's changed now
02:47 for cyclists they've got priority haven't they on the road and stuff.
02:51 Cycle lanes and stuff.
02:52 Yeah I think cycle lanes would be more of a good idea to have them everywhere because
02:57 then there's space for both really.
02:59 Pulling over would cause loads of congestion and like with the pedestrians as well if cars
03:03 are pulling over all the time.
