00:58 - Oh, yeah.
00:59 Red something and then beet and then...
01:02 Yeah, watermelon.
01:04 - And what does that mean?
01:06 - Red beet watermelon salad.
01:08 - I think I'm going to have to duck.
01:10 - What's that?
01:11 - Sign it.
01:12 - Yeah, you're going to have to sign that.
01:14 - I think it's like this and like this.
01:16 - Exciting.
01:18 - And Jan Manikumar wanted to deliver
01:20 a whole new dining experience
01:22 and give deaf people a chance to shine.
01:24 - Providing them an opportunity here,
01:26 I think it's something that they deserve
01:28 and they are very talented.
01:30 Every one of them, every one of my staff,
01:32 I am very happy to say they are extremely talented.
01:34 - More than 200 deaf people apply to work here.
01:37 Most of the 50 or so who made the cut
01:40 have no restaurant experience, but a passion to learn.
01:43 - Giving the deaf community the opportunity to work
01:45 in a workforce that they wouldn't otherwise be able to work in.
01:48 And it's opening up a whole new workforce
01:52 for the deaf community.
01:54 - This is Mehdi Safavi's first full-time job.
01:57 An interpreter helped us ask him how that feels.
02:00 - It's wonderful. I'm so excited to be here.
02:03 It's a deaf environment where hearing people can come in
02:06 and experience our world and our culture.
02:09 So it's really amazing, really amazing.
02:12 And it's a challenge for me, but a great challenge.
02:15 - It's brand new, but already there's a buzz
02:18 and reservations are pouring in.
02:20 - Your biggest problem right now is that you have too much business?
02:23 - I might have too much.
02:25 - And all through an entirely different word of mouth.
02:29 Ioana Brumeliotis, CBC News, Toronto.
