Transcript
00:00 In Guatemala, amidst post-election tensions, popular demonstrations condemned the actions
00:14 of the institutions and called for the resignation of the Attorney General.
00:17 In the United States of '40s were green light shipments of depleted uranium shells to Ukraine,
00:25 calling the second country to do so after the United Kingdom.
00:31 And in Niger, thousands joined large demonstrations against France, demanding that the French
00:35 ambassador and soldiers leave the country.
00:42 Hello welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Televisual Studios
00:46 in Havana, Cuba.
00:47 We begin with the news.
00:49 Guatemalan social organizations called for a mobilization on Saturday in defense of democracy
00:53 and the popular will expressed in the polls.
00:56 Citizens will take to the streets to protest against electoral corruption, which intends,
01:00 through the invalidation of the Zemilla movement, to disavow Bernardo Arevalo as president-elect.
01:06 The Guatemalan leader called for national unity to denounce those who refuse to accept
01:10 the electoral results by the suspension of the legal personality of the Zemilla movement.
01:15 The country's social movements demand the resignation of those responsible for the crisis
01:20 and announced that they will gather signatures to support their petition.
01:28 Here are your signatures.
01:29 It is just nothing more than a public call to demand, because we're not going to ask,
01:33 we're going to demand, as Guatemalans, that the Attorney General of the Prosecutor's Office,
01:38 Maria Consuelo Torres Argueta, present her resignation.
01:42 Because we're more than 114,000 Guatemalans demanding it, and more Guatemalans keep joining
01:47 this petition.
01:50 Today Maria Consuelo Torres Argueta, Rafael Curchiche, Cintia Monteroro and Angel Pineda
01:56 have been declared enemies of the people, enemies of our democracy, and they are the
02:01 main coup perpetrators and operators of impunity.
02:04 So thank you Guatemalans.
02:06 Here are your names and together we will continue to demand the resignation of these individuals.
02:12 Brazil's National Human Rights Council denounced serious abuses in police operation Escudo
02:16 led by the governor of Sao Paulo.
02:18 The operation left 23 casualties in the coastal city of Garuja.
02:22 The interviews made by the council even report on extraficial executions of people who were
02:26 asleep.
02:27 The preliminary report drafted by the council and presented on Friday denounces an intolerable
02:31 lethality rate and demands that the death of civilians in the operation launched by
02:36 the government of the state of Sao Paulo at the end of July be clarified.
02:40 The report also denounces that 72% of the detainees are black people, 55% of whom do
02:45 not have criminal records.
02:52 In Ecuador, 50 guards and 7 police officers have been released after being held hostage
02:57 in several prisons for more than a day.
03:00 Recent violent acts are the work of criminal gangs, with members in prisons in retaliation
03:04 to efforts by authorities to retake control of prisons by relocating inmates, seizing
03:09 weapons and other measures.
03:12 National Police Commanders said four car bombs and three explosive devices went off across
03:16 the country in less than 48 hours.
03:18 The latest explosion happened on a bridge linking two cities in the coastal province
03:22 of El Oro.
03:23 Earlier, there had been another incident involving a gas tank explosion on their bridge in Napa
03:29 province within Ecuador's portion of the Amazon rainforest.
03:33 Security analyst Daniel Ponton said the chain of events taking place three weeks before
03:38 the slaying of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio are part of a systematic and
03:44 clearly planned attack which has evidenced the state's inefficiency in preventing crime.
03:53 More than 3,500 people have been killed in Haiti as a result of gang violence.
03:58 According to the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti, being none, the police alone
04:04 reported 3,494 complaints of lynching, murder, kidnapping, sexual violations and burning
04:10 of buildings during the first semester of 2023.
04:14 The organization's report said that entire families, including children, have been executed
04:19 or burned alive.
04:20 The gangs control 80 percent of the capital, although in other areas the situation is not
04:24 less serious.
04:25 The United Nations Agency estimates that only the last week more than 10,000 people have
04:31 been displaced, a figure that is only surpassed by Sudan.
04:57 In the Caribbean, the word "conuco" comes from indigenous languages and means "a small
05:02 parcel of agricultural land."
05:03 In this occasion, we bring you the story of Las Conuqueras, a group of women in the Venezuelan
05:08 state of Carabobo that found in communal agriculture the solutions to their families' hardships,
05:12 sometimes with their bare hands.
05:14 Today, they feed, nurture and give a purpose to their communities through self-sustaining
05:18 agriculture, with governmental assistance.
05:21 They are the protagonists of this new episode of the series "Venezuela on the Move," a
05:25 production of our colleagues Adriana Sivori and Jesus Romero.
05:31 Not even the burning sun or the difficulties that may arise can stop their work.
05:36 They are known as Conuqueras women, and they are farmers.
05:42 I have been working here for 10 years for this community.
05:45 Apart from that, I also study and work.
05:47 Within the same agricultural zone, there are people like women who are seamstresses, housewives.
05:54 We do other activities.
05:56 We organize ourselves either in the morning or in the afternoon to have the possibility
06:01 of doing all the activities.
06:03 Dulby takes care of some of the plots of land in the morning shift.
06:08 Her son and her daughter-in-law live with her and sometimes help her in the fields.
06:15 I teach mathematics in a high school, a public high school.
06:18 We are people with an enormous treasure, but more than that of producing, of creating,
06:24 of doing different things.
06:26 There is something that we should always keep in mind, which is community, and we should
06:30 never lose that.
06:36 Everything they grow is for their families and the community itself.
06:39 To this day, they have produced 40,000 kilograms of food, cereals, fruits, and vegetables.
06:48 At first it was hard because we started with our hands, with just our hands.
06:53 We started using spades and machetes to plant.
06:57 Then we started to work with institutions.
06:59 We contacted them and they came and they saw that what we were doing was a reality.
07:06 Now they receive training.
07:08 They have instruments and they have been able to build a deep water well for irrigation.
07:12 And the government has also given land titles to these organized women.
07:17 In this town, Conoqueras women serve and distribute the food house by house to more than 13,000
07:23 people.

07:57 Welcome back from the South.
07:58 In the United States, a pregnant African-American woman was fatally shot by a police officer
08:04 in the parking lot of a grocery store in the Midwestern state of Ohio on Friday.
08:09 The body count footage released by the local police shows two officers attempting to question
08:14 21-year-old Takeya Young for alleged shoplifting, and one officer standing in front of the car
08:21 is seen firing directly towards her as she appears to drive in his direction.
08:26 The victim's family saw the footage before it was released and issued a statement saying
08:31 they considered the shooting a criminal act and avoidable and would take legal action.
08:35 The details of the officers have not been released and only the one who shot the woman
08:39 is suspended, both with pay.
08:42 The Blenheim Township Police Department has asked the Ohio Attorney General's Bureau
08:45 of Criminal Investigation to look into the incident.
08:53 Russia and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and Affiliates, OPEC+,
08:58 agreed to maintain the cuts in crude oil production for 2024.
09:01 The information was released by the Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, who
09:05 has said that the terms will be announced next week.
09:08 Moscow committed to reduce its crude oil exports by 500,000 barrels per day during the month
09:13 of August and plans to reduce another 300,000 barrels per day in September.
09:17 The Prime Minister also left open the possibility of a further cut planned for October.
09:22 Russia's decision comes amid expectations generated by Saudi Arabia's announcement
09:26 that it will extend its 1 million barrels per day cut to October.
09:30 Oil prices soared last month in London to six-month highs, above $88 a barrel.
09:35 The US will become the second country after the UK to green-light shipments of depleted
09:54 uranium shells to Ukraine.
09:57 The move turns a deaf ear to concerns that such munitions could have a dramatic negative
10:01 effect on public health and the environment.
10:04 The munitions are intended for US Arban tanks, which are expected to arrive in Ukraine in
10:09 the coming weeks.
10:10 According to several unnamed US officials, the depleted uranium shells will be part of
10:14 the next multi-million-dollar arms donation to be announced next week.
10:18 When the toxic shells first show up in Ukraine, Moscow and the UK would be held accountable
10:24 for the irreparable harm caused to civilians and soldiers alike.
10:27 UK officials, however, have dismissed studies which have indicated the use of depleted uranium
10:31 in weapons is linked to a spike in cancer and birth defects in Iraq.
10:40 Russian authorities in Donetsk have confirmed that the early election day has been disrupted
10:44 by the Ukrainian cluster munition attacks.
10:47 The attacks were carried out from the west of Donetsk against the Petrovsky and Kirovsky
10:53 districts with 155-caliber cluster munitions, typical of those used by the North Atlantic
10:58 Treaty Organization.
11:00 According to the Russian Defence Ministry, three more 155-caliber shells hit Golovka
11:05 and Golomovsk within half an hour.
11:08 No report of injuries, fatalities or material damages has been released yet.
11:16 The Russian Defence Ministry reported that it had captured several strategic heights
11:20 near Kupyansk, an eastern Ukrainian city where Moscow increased pressure in August.
11:26 During the Kupyansk direction, the tactical position of the Western Troop units was improved
11:30 by taking over enemy strongholds and key heights.
11:34 By skillful use of means of destruction, significant damage was inflicted on Ukrainian Armed Forces
11:39 units.
11:40 The enemy's losses during the week amounted to 470 Ukrainian servicemen, 22 armored combat
11:47 vehicles, 21 vehicles and 18 field artillery pieces.
11:52 The command of the formations of the Ukrainian Armed Forces purposefully throws personnel
11:57 into meat grinder assaults without cover to overcome mine and explosive barriers of our
12:02 forces on foot.
12:10 In the Special Administrative Chinese Region of Hong Kong, Typhoon Saola caused flooding
12:21 and material damage before downgrading to a tropical storm.
12:25 Not one person has been killed by the storm but authorities in Hong Kong have urged people
12:28 to remain alert for they still expect surges to occur.
12:33 Tens of millions of people in the coastal areas of southern China had taken refuge in
12:37 their homes since Friday.
12:39 Although Hong Kong did not suffer the direct impact of the typhoon, its winds of 210 km/h
12:46 caused the highest alert level in the Special Administrative Region.
12:49 Saola left downed trees, broken windows and some flooding stores and public spaces.
12:58 Greek firefighters battled flames in forested areas in the country's northeastern region
13:03 on Friday as a massive wildfire continued to burn.
13:06 The blaze burning for the 15th day has already been blamed for the death of 20 people whose
13:11 bodies were found last week.
13:13 On the other hand, firefighters rescued a group of 25 migrants trapped in a forest area
13:17 as flames approached.
13:19 The fire department said the group became trapped in a forest between two villages in
13:23 the Evros region, near the border with Turkey.
13:26 No injuries were reported and there was no immediate information on their nationalities.
13:31 However, all are believed to have been migrants who had recently crossed the border.
13:36 To date, thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes in villages and towns in
13:40 northeastern Greece due to the fire, although the vast majority have since been allowed
13:45 back.

14:09 Welcome back to From the South.
14:24 In Gabon, the ruling military junta announced the reopening of the country's international
14:28 borders.
14:29 The Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions approved the measure effective
14:33 immediately, so that the land, sea and air borders were opened as of this Saturday, September
14:38 2.
14:39 The Committee voted for a reopening of borders in order to preserve respect for the rule
14:45 of law and good relations with neighboring countries and the rest of the international
14:49 community, as well as to promote the continuity of the state while showing commitment to fulfill
14:56 its international commitments.
14:58 The borders had been closed on August 30 when General Price Oleg Nkema overthrew President
15:04 Ali Bongo, who had been in power for 14 years.
15:13 In order to ensure continued respect for the rule of law, good relations with our neighbors
15:18 and with all states around the world, and to promote the continuity of the state while
15:22 demonstrating our firm determination to honor our international commitments, the Committee
15:27 for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions has decided to reopen the land, sea and air
15:32 borders with immediate effect as of this Saturday, September 2, 2023.
15:39 Large demonstrations are taking place outside the French military base in Nairsk, Capernaum,
15:43 as pressure mounts on France's ambassador and soldiers to leave the country.
15:47 According to security personnel, the protest was scheduled to begin at about 3 p.m. local
15:51 time Saturday, but thousands of demonstrators had already gathered by 10 a.m., taking police
15:57 and security forces by surprise.
15:59 Media sources report that demonstrators expressing their frustration for the French presence
16:03 in their country were beginning to take matters into their own hands.
16:07 The French ambassador, Sylvain Hidde, remained in Niger despite a 48-hour deadline to leave
16:12 the country more than a week ago, a decision French President Emmanuel Macron said he applauds.
16:18 Niger's military government, which seized power on July 26, has accused Macron of using
16:21 divisive rhetoric in his comments about the coup and seeking to perpetrate France's
16:26 neocolonial relationship with its former colony.
16:31 "We are here to express our determination, our commitment and our devotion to getting
16:37 the French military force and all the military bases on our national territory out of the
16:42 country."
16:43 A road accident in northern Iraq has killed at least 16 people, mostly Shia Iranian pilgrims,
16:49 as millions converge on the holy city of Karbala for Arba'en, one of the world's biggest
16:54 religious gatherings.
16:55 According to local state media, the accident occurred between the cities of Duhail and
16:59 Samarra and resulted also in at least 13 people injured.
17:03 The director of health services in the Salahuddin province, Khaled Burhan, said most of the
17:09 dead were visitors from Iran and that those hurt were taken to hospitals.
17:13 A health official told the press that the accident involved two menopauses which collided
17:19 head-on shortly before midnight on Friday.
17:22 According to witnesses, the official said that one of the drivers is believed to have
17:25 fallen asleep at the wheel.
17:27 According to figures issued on Friday by the Interior Ministry, this year 2.6 million pilgrims,
17:32 many from Iran, entered Iraq either by road or air since Arba'en began.
17:42 On Saturday, India's first space mission to study the sun departed from the country's
17:46 southeast at 11.50 am local time.
17:49 The Aditya probe, which means "sun" in Sanskrit, took off with the launched satellite
17:54 polar rocket from the Sriharikota centre.
17:58 According to information from the Indian Research Organisation, the probe will orbit the Earth
18:02 for 16 days, during which time it will gain speed to reach Lagrange, a place between the
18:07 sun and the Earth.
18:08 It is estimated that the mission will take about four months before reaching that point,
18:13 1.5 million kilometres from our planet.
18:16 Aditya will study, among other things, the outermost layers of the sun, the photosphere,
18:21 the chromosphere and the corona.
18:23 the sun.
