00:00Israeli strikes across Lebanon killed at least 27 people on Wednesday as the IDF ramps up
00:06attacks in the country.
00:11Former One Direction member Liam Payne was found dead after he fell from a balcony in
00:17Argentina.
00:21Italian Minister Matteo Salvini is on trial for refusing to let rescued migrants disembark
00:26in Italy in 2019.
00:36Israeli strikes across Lebanon killed at least 27 people on Wednesday, according to Lebanon's
00:41health ministry.
00:43In the southern city of Nabatia, at least 16 people were killed, including the city's
00:48mayor.
00:49Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister accused Israel of intentionally targeting a municipal
00:54council meeting there to discuss relief efforts.
00:58Israel has ramped up its attacks on the country amid growing international criticism that
01:02it is targeting UN peacekeepers in the region.
01:06UNIFIL again said that Israel deliberately targeted its positions in an attack on its
01:11watchtower.
01:12Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in northern Gaza remains dire as Israel's siege of the
01:18Jabalia refugee camp enters its 13th day.
01:22The top UN humanitarian official is accusing Israel of blocking the delivery of desperately
01:27needed aid to Gaza, saying there's barely any food left in the north.
01:31During the first two weeks of October, just one out of 54 coordinated movements to the
01:40north via the al-Rashid checkpoint was facilitated by Israeli authorities, while another four
01:50were impeded but eventually accomplished.
01:55Following warnings from the U.S., Israel let in a limited amount of aid on Wednesday, but
01:59the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations called the progress insufficient.
02:08Former One Direction member Liam Payne was found dead after he fell from a balcony in
02:13Argentina.
02:15Fans were quick to gather outside of the hotel in Buenos Aires to hold an impromptu vigil.
02:33Police rushed to the hotel on Wednesday evening after receiving a phone call from the hotel
02:38manager.
02:39He warned them of a guest who may have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
02:46Payne had previously been vocal about his battle with alcoholism and posted a video
02:50in July last year saying he had been sober for six months after receiving treatment.
02:56The 31-year-old was one of the five members of One Direction who formed during the British
03:01singing competition The X Factor in 2010 after they had all auditioned individually.
03:08The band rose to fame and became one of the most iconic boy bands of their era before
03:13disbanding in 2016.
03:20NATO's chief has remained non-committal about Ukraine joining the alliance despite Zelensky's
03:25newly announced victory plan hinging on becoming a member before the war ends.
03:32Ukrainian President Zelensky said his victory plan could bring peace to the country by next
03:36year but the first in his five-point plan might be the one most likely to make western
03:41allies balk.
03:44New NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte was non-committal about Ukraine's membership.
03:49We are in close contact with allies, with Ukraine to see how we can take next steps,
03:57how to do that in a way which is also successful, which is fruitful etc.
04:04Obviously these are talks I cannot give you all the insights about, that's impossible
04:10in a press conference like this but the victory plan of course we very much are debating with
04:17them.
04:18NATO's collective security guarantee is a political commitment by all member countries
04:23to come to the aid of any member that might be under attack.
04:28Many in the alliance refuse to allow Ukraine in while fighting continues for fear of being
04:33dragged into a wider war with Russia.
04:40There is still a long way to go before the final sentence but this week's hearing will
04:45be crucial in the open arms trial involving League leader Matteo Salvini.
04:50After Italian prosecutors requested a six-year prison sentence, his lawyer Giulia Bongiorno
04:56will present her closing argument explaining why the former interior minister is innocent.
05:02A few days ago, Patriots for Europe's far-right leaders rallied in support of Salvini in Puntida.
05:08His supporters have collected signatures in his defence and a group of League party members
05:13plans to take to the streets in Palermo on Friday to show their support.
05:18We spoke to one of them.
05:20We decided to accompany him because we believe that the trial is a political trial and therefore
05:27as a political party we want to show the Italians that the party supports our federal secretary
05:38Matteo Salvini and above all to make it clear how often the legislature instrumentalises
05:50some episodes for purely political purposes.
05:54The former interior minister has been charged with kidnapping for refusing to allow 147
05:59migrants rescued by the Spanish NGO Open Arms in 2019 to disembark in Lampedusa.
06:06Prosecutors argue that under the SAR convention anyone found in distress at sea must be assisted
06:12and provided with a place of safety.
06:15They also claim that the minister made the decision for his political advantage.
06:20We absolutely consider this an absolute provocation.
06:25We think that Matteo Salvini has exercised a power as a minister, as a minister of the
06:34interior, a political power, among other things, shared by the other political parties that
06:42were in government with him.
06:45Matteo Salvini says he doesn't regret his actions and that he did it to defend the country.
06:59If convicted, he could be barred from holding government office, but it could take time
07:03for that to come into effect as the league leader can decide to appeal the judge's decision.
07:09Giorgia Orlandi for Euronews in Rome.
07:15For a year, Serbian authorities have been systematically evacuating the areas around
07:22the northern border with Hungary, collecting migrants and transporting them to camps in
07:27the Serbian cities of Kikinda and Presevo.
07:31Hundreds of illegal immigrants used to live in the barns of the Karas farm along the border
07:36fence near the town of Horgos, leaving at night to get through the barbed wire fences.
07:41But today, discarded energy drink cans and animal remains are the only signs that this
07:46place was once full of life.
07:48The roof has collapsed, the nylon sheeting protecting the windows has been ripped off
07:52and you almost can't see the buildings through the weeds.
07:55Some of the locals, like Marta, are happy about the authorities' action.
07:59She says the area has become much safer.
08:11The
08:36change in Horgos is visible.
08:38The last time Euronews was there, almost everything was closed and people were hardly
08:42seen in public spaces, but now the shops are open and children are playing in the streets.
08:56Member states seem to be further tightening their migration policies.
08:59The subject is high on the agenda of the European Council.
09:05In a letter to capitals, Ursula von der Leyen proposed to speed up returns and open detention
09:10centers in third countries.
09:14The Commission President is thus in line with the request of 15 member states to transfer
09:19asylum seekers to safe third countries.
09:25Seventeen countries also called for an accelerated expulsion of foreign nationals whose asylum
09:30application is rejected.
09:34At the return hubs, there's a key question is whether the EU member states will find
09:39willing partners in order to establish those return hubs and more than that, also to figure
09:48out ways to get countries of origin and transit to comply in terms of readmission.
09:55In France, the new interior minister, who has made immigration his priority, wants to
09:59regularize undocumented migrants, but in small numbers and gradually.
10:05In Poland, Donald Tusk is considering temporarily and partially suspending the right of asylum
10:11to combat illegal immigration.
10:14Russia and Belarus are accused of orchestrating the influx of migrants using the Polish border
10:20to destabilize the EU as a hybrid attack.
10:25More so, please, migrants are weaponized in this way.
10:31On the other hand, fundamental EU values are at stake.
10:39This is extremely problematic.
10:40The right to asylum is a fundamental right that cannot be suspended, even in times of
10:45politically declared crisis.
10:48It is protected under EU law and international law, but also by the Polish constitution,
10:54which shows that this is not a migration issue alone, but it's a broader rule of law issue.
11:01While Hungary or Italy have been marginalized in the past for their hard-line migration
11:05policies, rest of the member states now also seem to be converging in this direction.
11:16Frankfurt's book fair opened on Wednesday, and this year it is setting its eyes on young
11:21adults.
11:23With the growing use of social media, the book industry is hoping to attract young adults
11:28back to real books.
11:30Trends on social media have more and more influencers presenting books, a good sign
11:35according to the fair's director.
11:38The German fair is the biggest book fair in the world and will run until 20 October, expecting
11:43more than 200,000 visitors.
