Thousands flock to first day of Royal Adelaide Show

With spring officially sprung, the longest-running event on the South Australian calendar is underway. Famous for bringing the country to the city, organisers of the Royal Adelaide Show say it remains one of the biggest and most-loved agricultural fairs in the country.

00:08 But the show hasn't grazed too far from its roots.

00:13 And whether it's carnival rides, showbags or Dagwood dogs,
00:17 there seems to be something for everyone.

00:21 Probably the fun house I went on.
00:24 Not the rides. The rides.
00:26 And the food. Yeah, the food.
00:28 We won the Strain on Miss Wales.
00:30 With more than 450,000 people expected to attend this year
00:35 in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis,
00:38 organisers believe this old tradition
00:40 still knows how to cut through to the public.
00:43 It is, by far and away, and quite easily,
00:45 the biggest show in Australia on a per capita basis.
00:48 For South Australia's rural industries,
00:50 it's a chance to show off the best of the best.
00:53 To get them ready for the show, we've got to clip them, um...
00:56 ..make sure that they can walk and, like, they're nice with the people.
01:01 With almost 25,000 different competitions
01:04 helping put farmers on the map.
01:07 For us, we're a smaller breed,
01:08 so it's a really good way to get the breed out there.
01:12 With more than 4,000 animals set to make their way through the gates
01:15 over the next nine days,
01:16 this really is the country taking over the city.
01:19 And some here are really embracing the full farming experience.

01:29 Getting young people to understand what agriculture's all about,
01:31 the careers that are available and also that economic contribution.
01:33 So, yeah, it's much more than just show bags and dagger dogs.
