00:00 Welcome to Sunday Night Footy Wrap. I'm David Brough and I'm joined by Edward Holland.
00:04 Good evening Edward.
00:05 Good evening David, how are you doing?
00:06 We're well and truly into finals football now. A second day for the weekend and a second
00:11 edition of Footy Wrap. First of all, Central Highlands and a win to Hepburn over Skipton.
00:18 No surprise there. More on that in a moment and a quick result from today's big game,
00:23 an elimination final in the Ballarat Football Nepal League.
00:26 Yep, North Ballarat with a 17 point come from behind win against Redan at East St. Oval
00:32 on Sunday today.
00:33 Right, okay. So we'll go to Central Highlands first because I know you've also got some
00:36 other big news in the Ballarat Football League. But after yesterday's win by Bungaree over
00:41 Carnum Linton to progress to a preliminary final, today was the turn of Hepburn and Skipton
00:46 to do battle at Learmonth. Another perfect day for football. Conditions, apart from a
00:52 bit of a breeze or wind going across the ground, certainly ground in great nick and it was
01:00 a great day for Footy. Even came away I think with a bit of sunburn today. So spring is
01:06 in the air and that's when you really get excited about football. But as we mentioned
01:12 earlier, yes Hepburn took the points. They won by 27 points over the EMUs 12-12 to 8-9.
01:21 So they led for a large part of the day. Skipton kicked the first goal of the game. But from
01:29 there really it was all Hepburn. They kicked away in the second quarter, kicking with the
01:34 advantage of what breeze there was. They kicked away to a 25 point lead at half time and basically
01:41 that was where it stood for the rest of the game. Skipton would make a couple of surges
01:46 during the day, particularly late or early in the last quarter as it was. They got within
01:53 14 points. But the story all day was whenever Skipton did get a goal and get their energy
01:59 levels up and think well, you know, they're a chance to peg this back and really make
02:03 it interesting. Each time Hepburn came back like a good side does and replied with a goal
02:10 or two. So, yes Hepburn, just too classy for the day, too strong, a little bit better organised
02:17 and they got the points. Mitch Banner had a good day in front of goal. He was among
02:22 them and also Sean Ty, the big ruckman for Hepburn. I thought he was best on the ground,
02:28 an absolute master class. I've described some of his efforts before. He's just so smart
02:35 and the ruck and he was from his work, he brings in the midfield and they're away. Just
02:42 on the unknown quantity before the game, would Andy McCain make an unexpected early return
02:50 from his serious leg injury? He was named as part of an extended interchange. The answer
02:56 is no, he did not play. So we'll just have to wait and see how all that plays out. But
03:01 certainly I don't think he ever was going to play today. He was at the game but still
03:06 got some trouble with that leg. So we'll just have to see whether he can come back
03:10 in the next week or so. But yes, a good win to Hepburn. So that means Hepburn now fronts
03:15 up against Skipton in the preliminary final on Springbank. Springbank, yes, at Learmonth
03:23 next Saturday. That's a rematch of last year's thriller. Was that at Learmonth as well? Yes,
03:27 same ground, same team, it's a different year. And Hepburn will be hoping for a different
03:32 result. Springbank will be favourite in that game though. And Gordon and Bungaree will
03:38 do battle in the other preliminary final at Bunningham on Sunday. And Gordon will be favourite
03:44 to win that. But who knows how they'll pan out. Okay, that's the Central Highlands Football
03:50 League for the weekend. How did you see the battle today? Yes, they were a jag, came out
03:57 of the gates firing. They had an early lead, probably three or four goals. And before North
04:04 Ballarat actually fought back and it was a big third quarter. They fought back and didn't
04:08 just fight back and actually kept running away with it. So it was a six goal swing in
04:13 the end to enjoy a 17 point win. Jamie Quick with five goals today. He was at his crowd
04:20 staring best. I think the locals there didn't really realise that the more you get stuck
04:24 in the Jamie Quick, the more he loves it. And he steps up to the big occasion. So five
04:29 goals, he let the crowd know about it, had a big day out. But yeah, the big story from
04:33 Eastern Oval was the Roosters win was soured by a knee injury to Clay Jenkins, one of the
04:41 club favourites. It was just in the dying moments of the game as well. And Clay was
04:46 stopped and he was stretched off. So fearing the worst, the Roosters and yeah, not a very
04:52 good way for him to end the season, but they'll stick by him and support him and play for
04:57 him. So sending our thoughts to Clay. But yeah, the Roosters move on, Redan season over,
05:05 but pretty, pretty proud season for Gary Leamont's side. They were tipped to finish in the top
05:09 six, to be one of those teams moving up into the top six. And they've done that and they'll
05:13 keep building into next year with their young guns developing. But sets up a Dali and North
05:19 Ballarat clash next Saturday, currently scheduled for City Oval. We'll see how that goes throughout
05:26 the week and Melton and East Point also scheduled for City Oval on Sunday. And I mentioned East
05:32 Point, they had a big story out of them. Yesterday, Jordan Johnson not lining up, he got last
05:39 minute surgery on a broken thumb on a Friday night. So some people at the club are saying
05:46 that's his finals campaign over, other ones are a little bit more hopeful. It all depends
05:50 on how they put the plate in or whatever. Amazing things can happen in finals. Yep.
05:55 Yep. So whether or not he's keen to line up with the plate and everything next week, but
06:03 we'll have to wait and see. I'm sure regardless, he'll be named on an extended bench and we'll
06:07 have to wait and see on Sunday. But all right. So Dali, North Ballarat, I'm looking forward
06:12 to that one because over the years there's no love lost between the two black and white
06:17 sides. Yeah, well even recently, even last week, or two weeks ago, no love lost. But
06:22 yes, Dali had a win recently against North Ballarat at Dali Park and North Ballarat got
06:27 the four points against them at Mars Stadium. So yeah, it's all building up. Those are the
06:32 final four remaining, but that's also, can't forget, that's a double chance game as well,
06:36 the way the fixture goes. Yeah, North Ballarat flipped into that. Yeah. So they jumped into
06:43 that spot that we talk about the third getting. Yeah, so they've... You know, if things go
06:50 according to the order, that's where your third place team wins and gets into the double
06:54 chance. But with Sebastopol losing, North Ballarat has jumped over there and it's a
06:59 bonus for them. So yeah, their chances are certainly enhanced, aren't they? Yeah, absolutely.
07:05 Making a grand final. Absolute dream run. But yeah, let's run through the rest of the
07:09 results while I'm here. So Eastbourne with an 18 point win against Sebastopol and Eastern
07:14 Oval third on Saturday. Dali with a 14 point win against Melson at Mattingly Park on Saturday
07:20 as well. Alright, just wrapping up with the Central Highlands too. Didn't really say much
07:25 about Skipton today, not their day. Second time they've reached a semi-final. I think
07:32 they've done a good job again this year. New coach, a few changes. I think their big loss,
07:38 and we haven't spoken a lot about it, was the absence in the later stages of the year
07:43 of Sam William. And that last year's Central Highlands Football League best in the Ferris,
07:48 he was in scintillating form again. And yeah, when he dropped out, he's a player that can't
07:53 be replaced. And they also lost the experienced hand up forward to Vandriew Pitson late in
07:59 the season too. So two experienced players that when you get to this stage, it makes
08:03 a difference. And yeah, there's no doubt about that. But they should still be happy with
08:08 their season. And as I said in the call today, I don't usually talk about rumours, but I'll
08:16 tell you what, there's plenty of rumours floating around about the Emus. And if half of them
08:20 come true, they could be an improver next year if the off-season works as they would
08:29 like. But more on that later. And also, I should say that if you haven't caught up with
08:36 the action from yesterday's game, the replay of the Kahn and Linton-Bungaree game is online,
08:42 as is also, as we speak, the replay, the live stream replay of today's game between Hepburn
08:49 and Skipton. Unfortunately, unable to bring that live because of signal problems. But
08:54 certainly, we were out there, we called the game. And you can catch that, all that action
09:00 there and see how Hepburn did take down Skipton. And just a final reminder, plenty of Islanders
09:05 in there in with it. Wednesday night, we have our next presentation night. It's the Central
09:13 Highlands Football and Netball League's Best and Fairest. Coming from the Ballarat District
09:18 Trotting Club. We will both be there. So looking forward to that. We'll be streaming that live
09:24 for our subscribers. So if you're not a subscriber and you want to watch how the voting goes
09:30 for all the senior netball and football, subscribe. And you can see it live as it happens on Wednesday
09:37 night. And we'll also have a live blog detailing all the vote getters from each club. So a
09:44 big week ahead as we head towards preliminary finals in the Central Highlands and semi-finals
09:50 in the Ballarat Football League. Anything else to say?
09:55 Just how good was the weather this weekend, David? Hopefully it stays around.
09:58 The forecast is it goes a bit sour during the week. So let's hope it just like the week
10:02 that's just gone, it got pretty cold and a couple of wet days during the week. And let's
10:07 just hope it flips over and we have another couple of good days for football and netball.
10:13 Anyway, thanks for joining us. It's been a busy weekend. We've enjoyed bringing you
10:17 all the news and there'll be more news in the next couple of days. We've got injury
10:21 updates from both competitions and the like. And of course, as we said, the Central Highlands
10:27 best of the fairest counts on Wednesday night. So until next time, until Wednesday night,
10:31 we'll see you again. Good evening.
