CHOT RESIGNS AS GILAS HEAD COACH

Following Gilas Pilipinas' 96-75 win over China in the FIBA World Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, September 2, Chot Reyes stepped down as head coach of the Philippine men's basketball team.

Reyes, who steered Gilas to a 1-4 win-loss record at the world meet, said he informed the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) of his decision prior to the Philippines-China game.

Reyes added that he has to “step aside” because the hatred of some fans is too much to bear.

00:00 Are you stepping down from your position or is it a decision from MESV?
00:08 No, I haven't heard anything from management. It is my decision.
00:13 Like everybody knows, I didn't apply for this job. I didn't volunteer. I was given this mandate.
00:20 I had already retired from coaching the national team.
00:24 And through all the preparation and through all these times, I always said that they will judge us on the performance in the World Cup,
00:34 regardless of what happened between the time I was appointed and today.
00:38 I said judge us by our performance.
00:40 And obviously we didn't perform. And like I said in the last game, I take full accountability.
00:46 And because of that, I think it is time for me to step aside.
00:51 I hate using the word "design" because I'm not a quitter. I am not a quitter.
00:58 I would just like to emphasize to everyone who is asking for that.
01:04 But at the same time, I signed up to do the job and we did not deliver the result.
01:14 So I think it is time to step aside and allow the SVP to make a decision.
01:22 What is your decision?
01:31 It's a decision that I arrived at with my family.
01:36 I just think it's time.
01:42 Like I said, we had a great preparation plan.
01:52 We started preparation for this June 12, Independence Day.
01:59 But we did get our first complete practice as a team, August 18, one week before our first game.
02:08 Think about that.
02:12 Even Team USA started practice August 3.
02:15 We were the only team that was complete.
02:17 August 18 was the first practice we had as a complete lineup.
02:21 August 18, seven days.
02:23 And still we fought. We fought all of those opponents.
02:26 Italy, Top 10 team, Dominican, Angola.
02:32 We fell short. We fell short.
02:35 But France didn't advance. Australia is not advancing.
02:40 There are so many powerful teams that didn't advance.
02:43 But in the Philippines, you can't lose.
02:46 Here in the Philippines, you can't lose.
02:49 Coach, have you told that?
02:53 After a while, it's just too heavy. It's too painful.
02:56 It's too difficult.
02:58 Just to be very honest,
03:01 the others are really saying it so I don't deserve it.
03:06 My family doesn't deserve it.
03:08 Have you given this decision to the SP?
03:12 And so you're saying that you won't have anything to do with the selection for the upcoming Asian League?
03:19 I've informed Mr. Panlilio and Mr. Vargas.
03:26 But there's no decision as of now.
03:29 As far as I know, I don't know with them.
03:32 But before the game, I told them this is going to be my last game already.
03:36 Before the game, I said regardless of the result.
03:40 Coach, which was sweeter? The 2014 that you won or this one?
03:49 Well, I guess this because it's in front of the home crowd of the Philippines.
03:55 This is the actual game.
03:59 This is the keeper, right?
04:02 Great gesture by the players.
04:06 You know, people don't realize.
04:10 For me, the booing before the game is okay.
04:14 I was there. I didn't kick.
04:16 But they don't realize the effects of players.
04:18 They get demoralized as well.
04:26 They're wondering why I'm like that.
04:28 And all of the calls for me to resign and all of that.
04:34 Of course, the players read that.
04:36 They're affected too.
04:38 So it affects the game, the way we play games.
04:42 It's a distraction to the team.
04:45 It's not good for the team.
04:47 So they don't deserve it.
04:51 I'm done. I'm done.
04:55 My family and my players do not deserve it.
05:02 And I would just ask all of my detractors and mashers.
05:09 I'm willing to ask, to answer every single one of their comments
05:14 as long as they talk to me face to face.
05:17 Just don't hide behind anonymous whatever on social media.
05:25 Come and talk to me face to face.
05:27 And I will answer all your points one by one.
05:30 On why certain decisions were made.
05:32 And why this is what it is.
05:38 Why things turned out like that.
05:41 So that's it.
05:44 The players don't deserve it.
05:47 My family certainly doesn't deserve it.
05:50 So I ask my bashers and my detractors.
05:55 I hope they're as perfect as they put themselves to me.
05:59 Coach, have the coaching staff stayed behind?
06:05 I haven't told anyone.
06:07 I haven't told the president.
06:12 Coach, how do you want to be remembered?
06:16 That I fought till I cannot fight anymore for my country with all my heart.
06:21 Coach, if you were to choose, who would you choose?
06:24 That's not in my hands.
06:27 Thanks everyone.
06:28 All right.
