Nevada's Burning Man Festival Road reopens; Exodus of stranded revellers begins | Oneindia News

  • last year
The Burning Man Festival attendees began their slow exodus from the campsite in the northern Nevada desert after muddy roads that left tens of thousands of partygoers stranded for days dried up enough to make travel possible. Festival organisers said they had started to let traffic flow out of the main road around 2pm local time on Monday - even as they continued to ask revelers to delay their exit to Tuesday to ease traffic. As of Monday afternoon, they said about 64,000 people remained at the festival site. Organisers also requested that participants did not to walk out of the Black Rock desert as some others had done throughout the weekend. The festival had been closed to vehicles after more than a half inch (1.3cm) of rain fell Friday, causing flooding and foot-deep mud.

00:00 The Burning Man festival attendees began their slow exodus from the campsite in the northern
00:10 Newadar desert after muddy roads that left tens of thousands of party-goers stranded
00:15 for days dried up enough to make travel possible.
00:19 Festival organisers said they had started to let traffic flow out of the main road around
00:23 2pm local time on Monday, even as they continued to ask revellers to delay their exit to Tuesday
00:29 to ease traffic.
00:30 As of Monday afternoon, they said about 64,000 people remained at the festival site.
00:36 Organisers also requested that participants do not walk out of the Black Rock Desert as
00:40 some others had done throughout the weekend.
00:43 The festival had been closed to vehicles after more than a half-inch of rain fell Friday,
00:48 causing flooding and foot-deep mud.
00:50 The road closures came just before the first of two ceremonial fires, signalling an end
00:55 to the festival was scheduled to begin Saturday night.
00:57 The event traditionally culminates with the burning of a large wooden effigy shaped like
01:02 a man and a wood temple structured during the final two nights.
01:05 But the fires were postponed as authorities work to reopen exit routes by the end of the
01:10 Labor Day weekend.
01:12 The National Weather Service said it would stay mostly clear and dry at the festival
01:16 site, although some light rain showers could pass through Tuesday morning.
01:21 The event began on 27 August and had been scheduled to end Monday morning.
01:26 The annual gathering, which was launched on a San Francisco beach in 1986, attracts nearly
01:31 80,000 artists, musicians and activists for a mix of wilderness camping and avant-garde
01:36 performances.
01:37 Disruptions are part of the event's recent history.
01:41 Dust storms forced organisers to temporarily close entrances to the festival in 2018, and
01:46 the event was twice cancelled altogether during the COVID-19 pandemic.
01:51 At least one fatality has been reported at this year's event, but organisers said that
01:55 the death of a man in his 40s was not weather-related.
01:57 It is not known when the event will be held next.
