00:00 My school was all the way around Stortford Sheffield and my first day was in reception
00:07 players, there was sandpit and water, you know tips and paws and a windy house, it was
00:13 absolutely lovely and then the teacher asked me when it was my birthday and I said 11th
00:20 of September and obviously they put me in reception when I should have been in in front
00:26 of everyone so I was just led away from all these lovely...
00:30 Taken away from all the fun bits.
00:32 Into a proper classroom with tables and chairs and stuff so it was a little bit of a traumatic
00:39 first day.
00:40 Did the rest of school make up for it or were you always thinking about reception?
00:43 It was a lovely lovely lovely school, the staff were lovely, the only thing that we
00:49 were all a little bit scared of a little is there was a dentist underneath so it was quite
00:55 complex, there was a secondary school next door on the main street and underneath the
01:03 school was actually the school head's dentist service so we were all a bit afraid of having
01:10 to go down there.
01:12 Was the dentist nice?
01:13 No.
01:14 Not like they are today.
01:17 Well I was petrified of school because it weren't big old Victorian buildings I just
01:24 think they look like a prison.
01:26 Oh my mum's taking me to prison mate.
01:28 She's dragging you along.
01:30 I did, I really kicked off first day.
01:33 I mean teachers then, there was one teacher I used to be absolutely petrified of when
01:40 I was five, six years old because the people that taught me had been fighting Nazis for
01:47 six years.
01:48 Right.
01:49 So they were dumping literary service and all that and he used to walk in with a cane
01:55 like that, like a swagger stick, he used to have to stand up, he used to take register,
02:00 he used to have to stand up, say 'here' if you just said 'here' he'd say 'what is it?'
02:08 and if you didn't say 'here sir' you were in bad luck, he didn't grab your ears he'd grab
02:14 your sideburns 'here' 'come to front of class' you're not paying attention.
02:19 Looking back you can imagine him being a sergeant major 'left right left right left' you know
02:24 he was like that.
02:25 I mean they don't teach, I mean we also do technical drawing the last couple of years
02:29 and things like that, metal work and metal work.
02:32 Skills, yeah yeah yeah.
02:33 Which school did you say you went to?
02:35 They don't need them nowadays because they've got to learn technology.
02:40 Which school did you say you went to in those first days?
02:42 All the Lane. It was All the Lane Infants School.
02:46 Then we went to Grimestore and then back to All Lane Seniors.
02:54 But that finished up being Eindhouse Lane, Eindhouse School.
