00:00 The Confederation of Manufacturing Unions in Uruguay rallied on Tuesday to demand better
00:05 wages and labor conditions.
00:07 The workers gathered in front of the executive tower in Montevideo under the slogan "Against
00:12 the Model of Inequality in Defense of the Rights Conquered Throughout the History of
00:17 Our Workers Movement".
00:18 Union representatives denounced that in the last month dozens of companies have closed
00:22 down and thousands of jobs have been lost.
00:26 Workers also demanded the executive branch to activate a re-industrialization policy
00:30 to strengthen the country's internal capacities.
00:37 The main thing is to show on the street what we are achieving as a Confederation of Manufacturing
00:41 Unions.
00:42 First, a plan of concrete proposals that will allow the development of the national industry,
00:47 to stop the hemorrhage of factory closures and massive layoffs throughout Uruguay.
00:51 Also to propose a 40-hour work week, to propose a minimum salary of 37,500 pesos, to propose
00:58 gender equality, the inclusion of female colleagues in different work centers, and to demonstrate
01:03 unity in the street, unity in action.
01:06 Regarding to the industry, to the defense of the national industry, we have lost many
01:11 job opportunities, not only in the chemical industry, we have also lost them in the metal
01:17 industry, the dairy industry and the tanning industry as well, so there is a great concern.
01:23 We come from policies that have not protected our industry for many years.
01:27 We have seen how it has been closed.
01:29 We have also seen how the Chinese industry and the Chinese market have closed its borders
01:35 during the pandemic years.
01:36 They accumulated a lot of raw material and unfinished goods, such as chemical products
01:42 and even auto parts.
01:43 Well, the Chinese market covers everything.
