UK’s Home Office has announced that the Wagner mercenary group will be soon declared a terrorist organization. Suella Braverman, the home secretary, said: “Wagner is a violent and destructive organisation which has acted as a military tool of Vladimir Putin’s Russia overseas. They are terrorists, plain and simple – and this proscription order makes that clear in UK law. Under the Terrorism Act, the Home Secretary has the power to ban an organization if they are involved in terrorism. A draft order will be laid in parliament on Wednesday, which will make it illegal to be a member of or support the Russian group in the UK.

00:00 UK's Home Office has announced that the Wagner Mercenary Group will be soon declared
00:05 a terrorist organisation.
00:07 Suela Brabhaman, the Home Secretary said, "Wagner is a violent and destructive organisation
00:12 which has acted as a military tool of Vladimir Putin's Russia overseas.
00:16 They are terrorists, plain and simple, and this proscription order makes that clear in
00:21 UK law."
00:22 Under the Terrorism Act, the Home Secretary has the power to ban an organisation if they
00:26 are involved in terrorism.
00:30 A draft order will be laid in Parliament on Wednesday which will make it illegal to be
00:34 a member of or support the Russian group in the UK.
00:37 The group has played a prominent role in the Russian invasion of Ukraine since it began
00:41 in February 2022.
00:44 By December of that year, the group took a central role in the battle for the Ukrainian
00:48 city of Bakhmut after enlisting thousands of prisoners in Russian jails to fight for
00:52 it on front lines and until recently was the mainstay of the Russian offensive.
00:59 Wagner Mercenary Group has also been active in conflicts in Syria, Central African Republic,
01:04 Sudan and Libya.
01:05 The Home Office said that the decision has been taken to proscribe the group under the
01:09 Terrorism Act 2000 due to the nature and scale of the organisation's activities as well
01:15 as the threat they pose to British nationals abroad.
01:18 Blacklisting the Wagner group would put it on the terror list with al-Qaeda, meaning
01:22 that it would be a criminal offence to be a member of or support the mercenary outfit
01:27 under UK laws.
01:29 In July, the UK had announced sanctions against 13 individuals and businesses it said had
01:34 links to Wagner in Africa, accusing it of committing crimes including killings and torture.
01:40 The announcement to proscribe Wagner comes after the Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was
01:45 killed in a plane crash last month.
01:47 The crash had occurred exactly two months after Prigozhin mounted a short-lived armed
01:52 rebellion against Russia's military leadership, posing the biggest challenge to Vladimir Putin's
01:57 authority in his 23-year-long rule.
