00:00 "The chemistry was undeniable."
00:02 Miley Cyrus is looking back at when sparks first flew between her and Liam Hemsworth.
00:06 The pop vocalist has been taking a walk down memory lane in a new TikTok series inspired by
00:11 her single "Used to be Young." And in one of her latest videos, she reflected on falling in love
00:15 with her now-ex-husband Liam on the set of their 2010 movie "The Last Song." The coming-of-age
00:20 drama centered on a teen named Ronnie, played by Miley, and her summer romance with a boy named
00:25 Will. And Liam was one of the many actors who auditioned for the part.
00:28 "Once we had written the screenplay, it was time to audition all the guys who would play Will,
00:33 my boyfriend, in the movie. And we had gotten it down from thousands to the final three.
00:39 And Liam was a part of that final three."
00:42 He ultimately landed the role. And as their characters were falling head over heels,
00:46 Miley and Liam were too, making for some palpable on-screen chemistry.
00:50 "One of the elements that made that movie feel so special was it was watching two very young people
00:57 fall in love with each other, which was happening in real time and in real life,
01:01 so the chemistry was undeniable."
01:03 Back in 2010, Liam told Access Hollywood about the audition process
01:08 and falling for Miley while filming.
01:09 "I came in first time and I read with the director and the producers,
01:14 and they really liked me. And then I came back a week later and read with Miley. And,
01:18 yeah, we had really good chemistry on screen. And, I mean, she was super, super nice. And,
01:24 yeah, it turned out good."
01:26 "When did you know you had real chemistry? Because, obviously,
01:29 she came out last week and said, 'your boyfriend and girlfriend.' When did you realize that?"
01:32 "I mean, we spent so much time together down there. It's kind of hard not to
01:37 either get close or hate them, I guess, when you're spending that much time with someone.
01:42 Yeah, I mean, it was kind of a bonus for us because we really enjoyed working together
01:48 and we enjoyed hanging out after, behind the camera."
01:53 Miley and Liam began dating while filming the movie, and had an on-again-off-again
01:57 relationship for a decade. The two married in late 2018 and announced their separation
02:02 the following summer. The couple's wedding came weeks after their Malibu home burned
02:06 down in a wildfire, a tragedy that deeply affected Miley. She told Rolling Stone in
02:10 a 2020 interview, "In a way, it did what I couldn't do for myself. It removed me from
02:14 what was no longer serving its purpose. And then as you drown, you reach for that lifesaver and
02:19 you want to save yourself. I think that's really what, ultimately, getting married was for me."
02:23 One last attempt to save myself.
02:24 In another video for her "Used to Be Young" TikTok series, Miley reflected on how special
02:29 her and Liam's Malibu home was, and how it played a special role in her life years before she ever
02:33 lived there, back when she was making her "Meet Miley Cyrus" album. "I was working with a producer
02:38 in Malibu that lived in a house in Ramirez Canyon, which I would have never known 15 years later,
02:44 I would be living in that house, which would eventually burn down. So that house
02:52 had so much magic to it that ended up really changing my life."
02:55 Two years after the "Meet Miley Cyrus" record, the singer put out her second studio album,
03:00 "Breakout." Back in 2008, she told Access Hollywood all about it.
03:03 "I think it's pretty appropriately titled because it is like a breakout record,
03:07 kind of not stepping away from Hannah, but just a little bit different than her character."
03:11 "Right. Do you think your fans will be ready for that or, you know, because of MTV?"
03:14 "I hope so. I hope they like it."
03:15 "In what way do you think it'll be a little bit different?"
03:19 "It should be different in just the way that it's a little more creative, a little more different.
03:23 The writing is definitely, the lyrics mean a lot more than my last couple records. This is
03:26 definitely super personal."
03:28 "Right. People don't realize you're rocking those lyrics yourself, which is fantastic."
03:31 "Yeah, thank you."
03:32 "So you spend a lot of time, I imagine, writing."
03:33 "Yeah, I definitely work hard writing."
03:36 "Right. So now this summer, you've got album, you've got movie."
03:41 "Movie."
03:42 "TV show."
03:42 "You've got TV show. So when do you find the time just to be Miley?"
03:46 "I don't know. Hopefully I do that sometime soon, but I'm not sure when."
03:50 "Right. So what is it like? I mean, just to sort of balance all that together."
03:53 "It's hard. It's definitely a lot of work, but it's fun too. It's a blast, you know,
03:58 to be able to finally put out a record. My favorite thing is to do is put out music.
04:01 It's just be on tour. Like, I love it."
04:03 "And I read a lot about you really want to sort of influence girls,
04:07 especially in this positive way. You know, sort of what sort of message would you like to be
04:11 out there?"
04:11 "I hope I can do that, especially with this record. Just that, like,
04:14 I want girls to be able to feel empowered and feel like they can kind of rock out and listen
04:18 to this music and feel, you know, like a reason to dance and a reason to smile and have fun. And
04:25 that this CD is totally, I think, age appropriate, like, especially for me,
04:29 but it is definitely a little more rock and roll."
04:32 AXIS Hollywood also spoke to Miley and her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, in 2006.
04:36 And she told us the Disney star she looked up to as an example in the spotlight.
04:40 "I remember looking up to, like, Hilary Duff. She was in the same position as I am now.
04:44 And I remember kind of watching her and I remember how it felt, you know, well,
04:46 if she did this, then I would do that and that kind of thing. So I always remember
04:50 that I kind of followed her as an example. And now the kids are kind of treating me that way, too.
04:54 And so really, just any time that I can tell anyone just to keep following their dreams,
04:57 because that was something that I always had. My dad kept telling me and then, you know,
05:01 I would get down about it. And I think I could, you know, do this or whatever. And now listening
05:05 to him really helped me out. So hopefully I can tell them the same things and help them out."
05:08 "Fantastic."
05:09 "I've always tried and prayed that God would use my life as a witness to other kids, that if Billy
05:16 Gray Cyrus from Flatwoods, Kentucky, can reach his dreams, then I can reach mine also. And to now be
05:23 able to pass that torch on to Miley and to hear her say that she watched the old man and knew that,
05:28 well, he can reach his dreams and I can reach mine, too. I mean, that's what life's about. So
05:32 I'm hoping that the kids out there will take a look at Miley and say, 'Hey, it's a little girl
05:36 who had a dream, who vowed that she was going to reach her goal and she worked very hard to
05:41 get there.' And once again, that non-glorified word of persistence, Miley had persistence.
05:45 She went to a lot of auditions that she didn't get. But she would get knocked down and she'd
05:49 just dust herself off and get right back up to the plate. And that's what it takes."
05:53 Access Hollywood recently looked back on some of our other early interviews with Miley,
05:57 including one dating all the way back to the 90s, when she was four years old and tagging
06:01 along with her dad. "This is fun, ain't it?" "Mhm. Yep. Very fun."
06:07 We were with an adorable four-year-old Miley back in 1997 and witnessed one of her first
06:12 musical collaborations with dad, Billy Ray. "Daddy? Daddy?" "What?" "Talk about Little Red
06:18 Caboose Chug Chug Chug." "Hey, you can sing that song." "Little Red Caboose Chug Chug Chug. Little
06:24 Red Caboose Chug Chug Chug." "Smoke's that gun, back, back, back. Coming down, chug, chug, chug."
06:31 And the train kept on rolling in 2005, when Miley and her dad auditioned for
06:36 Disney's Hannah Montana and nailed it. "I want my mullet back."
06:41 In 2006, Billy Ray told us his 14-year-old daughter always had the makings of a star.
06:50 "To me, she is a mixture between Lucille Ball and Dolly Parton." "Billy, get in by,
06:58 without taking ain't no giving." And back then, we put Miley and her dad to the test with a round
07:03 of father-daughter uncensored. "Okay, daddy, what was the deal with your mullet?" "Oh, baby doll,
07:09 that's called a Kentucky waterfall." "This is called scary, daddy." "Do you know the words
07:16 to 'Achy Breaky Heart'?" "Don't tell my heart, my achy breaky heart, that's it." In 2007,
07:22 we were on set of Hannah Montana with an excited Miley, who had just learned of the show's first
07:27 Emmy nomination. "I got an email this morning when I woke up that was like, 'Congratulations,
07:31 you're nominated.' And I was like, 'Oh my gosh!' I called all my friends, I was like, 'Guess what?'"
07:36 Miley was a full-on phenomenon by 2008, and we were behind the scenes for her music video,
07:43 "Fly on the Wall." "I wrote it for like the media, always feeling like they need to be in my life."
07:47 Miley had just celebrated her sweet 16, opening up about maintaining her self-esteem in Hollywood.
07:53 "I'm sure some people would think I would look better thinner, or I would look better. I feel
07:58 like healthy, and as long as I fit into my jeans, I'm happy, you know?" "You never obsess with..."
08:04 "I do. I definitely, it's like all girls do, and there'll be times where I just wish I could look
08:07 like that, but I'm like, you know, that's not what you're meant to be."
08:12 you
