00:02 Hey, I'm Warren Yu, and welcome to my mind massage.
00:11 I'm going to take you to a sound journey
00:16 using my favorite things.
00:17 (plastic crinkling)
00:24 (scratching)
00:27 I've always been a fan of skateboarding
00:36 since I was the age of 13, 14.
00:40 I'm just gonna rip it open.
00:43 (plastic crinkling)
00:46 It's a terrible job, but I used to play with Tectex
01:04 and Black River Rams growing up.
01:06 I used to be a fan of this guy named Mike Schneider
01:10 that does like professional fingerboarding
01:12 and he would just have like yellow fingerboard clips
01:17 and I would wear like brands like DC growing up,
01:21 Supreme, Stussy, just like into like the whole skate culture.
01:26 I'm not very good at skating, but I just enjoy the aesthetic.
01:32 I'm learning currently right now, actually.
01:38 This is basically my childhood toy.
01:42 Growing up, I loved unpacking different designs
01:46 of skateboards.
01:47 Oh my God.
01:52 (plastic crinkling)
01:55 (scratching)
02:05 (plastic crinkling)
02:08 So I'm from Jakarta, Indonesia
02:12 and I flew out to LA two years ago
02:15 and now I'm living here.
02:16 I got inspired by making music from basically
02:24 just like loving the art of hip hop, I feel like.
02:28 Growing up with like a bunch of friends
02:29 and just like during that era, like 2016, 2017,
02:33 just like finally being able to listen to artists
02:36 like Future or like even Lil Uzi,
02:39 like SoundCloud artists and like older artists from then
02:43 and I just got super into hip hop in general.
02:45 So then, yeah, I started making covers
02:50 and remixes of like other songs
02:53 and then that led me to make my own music.
02:56 So I was just really inspired by the whole hip hop scene
02:59 really during that era.
03:01 (plastic crinkling)
03:04 So this is like my favorite pair of Jordan 1s.
03:08 I use this basically everywhere.
03:11 It's really beat, as you can tell.
03:13 Yeah, I think I bought this back in Indonesia
03:17 and then I started using it in Los Angeles
03:19 for like most of my performances, like even on tour.
03:23 My first ever festival performance.
03:28 (water bubbling)
03:31 Yeah, I basically jump around in these like
03:38 tattoo shoots with these.
03:42 I think it goes with like every outfit.
03:43 It's the mocha color way.
03:45 I used to like the Chicago's a lot more
03:49 or actually the Spider-Man Jordan 1s
03:51 'cause I owned those growing up.
03:53 But so far, this is like,
03:56 this is I think the best sneaker in the world.
03:58 The best model, I think.
04:00 You can skate them, you can play ball in them,
04:03 you can perform, do anything with them.
04:05 They're really comfy, so.
04:06 It's definitely like my favorite shoe
04:09 of all time in my collection.
04:11 If I had to switch lives with somebody for a day,
04:13 switch lives.
04:17 Probably like this skater named Tyshon Jones
04:23 because I wanna be a really good skater, actually.
04:27 I'm like in the process of trying to learn how to skate
04:30 and I wanted to know what it feels like
04:31 to do street skating and just like hang out
04:34 with a bunch of friends doing amazing,
04:36 cool-ass tricks in the streets.
04:39 If I would collaborate with any artists that are alive,
04:43 I think I'm just gonna choose Frank Ocean
04:46 because he's just been like an inspiration
04:50 to like my sound over the past few years.
04:53 I think he's one of the most creative artists
04:54 that has ever, you know, been in music, I think.
04:59 And he's just like super talented in general.
05:03 So like Frank Ocean is like my dream collaboration.
05:06 My Indonesian heritage definitely influenced my music
05:11 and storytelling, I feel like.
05:13 I definitely got inspired by like artists like
05:17 Rich Brian and Niki, which are on the same label as me
05:19 and they're from Indonesia, too.
05:21 So like I would get inspiration from them even,
05:24 just about them talking about how they grew up,
05:27 where they came from.
05:28 And yeah, and definitely just like my parents
05:32 were super into music, too.
05:33 So, you know, they inspired me growing up.
05:37 So I definitely like to involve a lot of like personal stuff
05:39 in my music and yeah, that's how I included.
05:43 These are my recent favorite obsession.
05:51 I have the carditos and only the garlic fried chips, though.
05:56 First time I had this was literally like two months ago
05:59 or like a month ago and it was the jazz mix.
06:02 So like I tried this version and it's just like
06:07 the best thing out of every, you know,
06:10 out of all of them, really.
06:15 It's just an incredible flavor.
06:18 (plastic crinkling)
06:21 It's like cereal.
06:40 (plastic crinkling)
06:43 (crunching)
06:45 They are really good.
06:52 (crunching)
06:54 It is more satisfying to pick it out,
06:58 hand pick it out from the mix, but yeah,
07:02 this is just the best one.
07:02 It kind of reminds me of like,
07:03 there's like a little MSG in this or something.
07:06 And where I'm from, Indonesia,
07:07 MSG is literally on everything.
07:09 Also on my Chinese side, so it's like,
07:12 it's like literally an MSG chip
07:14 but they have like crazy seasoning.
07:16 (crunching)
07:18 The inspiration behind Tennessee
07:34 was just honestly just keeping it organic.
07:36 I just like fell in love with New York
07:39 and we shot the video just run and gun
07:42 like in a random bar somewhere on the streets.
07:47 Just like, I feel like I wanted to always have
07:50 like a run and gun style video.
07:52 And like, I felt like Tennessee was a song made for that.
07:55 It doesn't really have any, like,
07:57 doesn't have to be too extra.
07:58 Like some of my other songs definitely require
08:01 more of like a direction in music videos,
08:04 but I don't know, it didn't really come from
08:08 like any sort of inspiration.
08:09 It's just like really just a run and gun video
08:11 that I really wanted to shoot
08:12 'cause those are my favorite type of videos.
08:15 Freaking creativity's life.
08:21 I suck at like unboxing stuff, by the way.
08:25 Yeah, I mean, growing up, I was very into accessories
08:34 like bracelets or like rings or like necklaces.
08:39 I feel like they add everything to the outfit.
08:43 I think creating jewelry is definitely like
08:49 something I wanna do in the future.
08:51 Like I'm definitely working on something soon, right now,
08:56 that has that element.
08:58 Element.
08:59 (plastic crinkling)
09:02 (plastic crinkling)
09:05 (plastic crinkling)
09:18 (plastic crinkling)
09:29 (plastic crinkling)
09:32 My vision for this necklace is just, you know,
09:44 try to keep it like not too like scrambled up.
09:47 I want it to like be three each, I feel like,
09:51 and have like a star or like a piece of star
09:55 in the middle here somewhere.
09:57 And then, yeah, have it like make it
09:59 like a star necklace somehow.
10:01 So, yeah, I'm trying to use as much colors as I can.
10:05 What fans can expect from me in this phase of my career?
10:12 I think it's just to be patient, I feel like.
10:16 I think I'm just like working on
10:18 a bunch of stuff right now.
10:20 They can definitely expect like a lot of fashion stuff
10:26 in the future for sure.
10:27 A lot of new music, a lot of experimentation with my music
10:31 and new styles that I wanna create.
10:33 I've definitely been more concise with my newer music.
10:37 I've definitely been more like tapped in
10:39 about what I wanna create as a full project.
10:42 So, I feel like, you know,
10:44 it's gonna be an exciting chapter.
10:46 I wanna evolve like different art mediums,
10:48 like started to shoot my own videos as well.
10:52 So, yeah, I think they can expect more hands-on creativity
10:57 for my music and for whatever I do.
10:59 I'm Warren Hu, and thank you for coming to my mind massage.
11:05 - Perfect, you did great, how was it?
11:10 - That was fun, that was really fun.
11:11 (laughing)
11:13 - It's crazy.
11:13 - You're a really good guy.
11:14 (laughing)
