00:00:00 Citizens of the Reject Nation,
00:00:04 it is Jon and Andrew Gordon back in the saddle once again
00:00:09 to check out a classic piece of cinema,
00:00:12 starring Denzel and Ethan Hawke.
00:00:15 It's training day, Andrew.
00:00:17 How are you feeling, man?
00:00:19 - I am excited to see what got Denzel Washington
00:00:22 his Best Actor Oscar nomination.
00:00:26 And win, win, win.
00:00:28 I'm excited.
00:00:29 - I am too, I am too.
00:00:30 Andrew used to be a beat cop
00:00:32 and I was once a grizzled detective
00:00:33 who got like cast off the force
00:00:35 for doing things my own way.
00:00:37 So together I think we have a lot of life experience
00:00:39 to apply to this.
00:00:40 So why don't you go ahead before we jump in,
00:00:41 leave a like on the video,
00:00:43 hit the subscription and notification buttons,
00:00:46 bells, what have you.
00:00:48 Thanks to Prepper, the team who edits down these videos.
00:00:51 We love them and appreciate them greatly.
00:00:53 And if you guys wanna see the entire training day
00:00:56 alongside us with your own copy,
00:00:58 you can come over to patreon.com/therealrejects.
00:01:01 Sync up and enjoy every moment
00:01:03 that doesn't make these reaction highlights.
00:01:04 It's a blast.
00:01:05 We also got a bunch of other shows and movies over there
00:01:07 that we watch with reaction highlights
00:01:08 and watch-alongs included.
00:01:10 Andrew, do you have anything else to say before we do this?
00:01:12 - Yes, I do.
00:01:13 Do you think I'd be the good cop or the bad cop
00:01:16 between you and I?
00:01:17 - You would be both cops.
00:01:20 - Yes, that's what I was hoping you'd say.
00:01:22 - I would be the criminal.
00:01:24 - Of what?
00:01:25 - Let's do this.
00:01:26 - Okay.
00:01:27 (gunshots)
00:01:29 (siren blaring)
00:01:33 - I love the simplicity of the title.
00:01:43 It almost looks like early digital editing.
00:01:46 - Hey, what are you doing up?
00:01:48 - Moo.
00:01:49 (laughing)
00:01:52 - Moo cow.
00:01:55 - Listen, everyone's telling you how lucky you are.
00:01:57 Don't screw this up.
00:01:58 - Oh no.
00:01:59 That's a theme.
00:02:01 - Apartments wide open.
00:02:03 Get my own division someday.
00:02:06 You should see those guys' houses.
00:02:09 - He's got it all mapped out.
00:02:10 - That's right, man.
00:02:11 - Career cop.
00:02:13 - Dwight?
00:02:14 - Yes, sir.
00:02:14 - On your way to roll call?
00:02:16 - Yeah, I'm on my way up.
00:02:17 - I thought it would be him.
00:02:18 - Listen, there's a coffee shop at 7th and Witt.
00:02:20 Maybe we'll do some business.
00:02:21 - You know, I just want to say thank you
00:02:23 for giving me this.
00:02:24 (laughing)
00:02:26 - No bullshit right to the point.
00:02:28 - I don't need you to kiss my ass.
00:02:31 - Good morning, sir.
00:02:33 - No, thank you, man.
00:02:35 - I'll get some chow in before we go to the office.
00:02:38 My dollar.
00:02:39 - Oh, thank you, sir.
00:02:40 But I--
00:02:41 - Fine, don't.
00:02:42 - I don't need the business write off.
00:02:45 - It's nice here.
00:02:47 - May I read my paper?
00:02:48 (laughing)
00:02:49 - I'm sorry, sir.
00:02:49 - Thank you.
00:02:50 - You know what, I'll get something to eat.
00:02:52 - Oh, hell no you won't, you fucked that up.
00:02:54 (laughing)
00:02:55 - Hazing is going excellently.
00:02:57 - This is a newspaper, right?
00:02:59 It's 90% bullshit, but it's entertaining.
00:03:03 - Sure.
00:03:04 - You won't let me read it,
00:03:05 so you entertain me with your bullshit.
00:03:07 Tell me a story right now, go.
00:03:09 - Problem with news today, man.
00:03:10 - We were on mid-watch.
00:03:12 - We who?
00:03:13 - Oh, me and Debbie.
00:03:14 - Who's Debbie?
00:03:15 - I'm sorry, Debbie Maxwell, my training officer.
00:03:18 - Uh-oh.
00:03:18 - Oh, okay, okay.
00:03:20 All right, all right.
00:03:21 (laughing)
00:03:22 - Doing his McConaughey impression.
00:03:24 (laughing)
00:03:25 - Lick a license.
00:03:26 - A what?
00:03:28 - Her license was she a lesbian.
00:03:31 - What?
00:03:32 I never heard that before.
00:03:34 - Just killing it right now.
00:03:36 - She calls me over to the vehicle
00:03:37 and shows me a slump 38 and two shotguns
00:03:40 fully loaded and locked.
00:03:41 - Oh, shit.
00:03:42 - She calls our supervisor, and I keep searching.
00:03:44 I find 500 grams of in the dash.
00:03:46 - Yeah.
00:03:46 - It's amazing that you could be out there
00:03:50 with a fine bitch for a year.
00:03:51 And the most entertaining story that you can come up with
00:03:54 to tell me is a drunk stop.
00:03:57 - It's about the journey, man, not the start point.
00:04:02 - You tap that ass, dude.
00:04:03 You know you tap that ass.
00:04:07 You put it in the back seat, bam, code X.
00:04:10 - Just tell him what he wants to hear.
00:04:12 - Fuck, man, I got a wife.
00:04:13 You got a...
00:04:14 - Code X, title of your sex tape.
00:04:16 - To the right of it and to the left of it are pockets, right?
00:04:19 In those pockets are money.
00:04:21 - Pay the bill.
00:04:22 - Oh, man.
00:04:24 - Like how he walks on the street like you don't give a shit.
00:04:28 - I would get so disoriented talking to this guy.
00:04:30 (laughing)
00:04:31 - Yeah, I would be so out of my element with him.
00:04:33 - So where's the office back at division?
00:04:36 - In the office, baby.
00:04:37 - That's right.
00:04:39 - On up.
00:04:40 (laughing)
00:04:46 - Sure.
00:04:48 Get it.
00:04:49 - Must make, I guess, really good money
00:04:52 as this particular type of cop.
00:04:54 - Yeah.
00:04:55 Do you think he accepts bribes?
00:04:56 I don't know.
00:04:57 - Nah, it's not possible, Andrew.
00:04:59 He's on the up and up.
00:05:00 - No way.
00:05:01 - He's a real straight shooter.
00:05:02 - Chase that training day.
00:05:03 - Today only to show me who and what you're made of.
00:05:06 You don't like narcotics, get the fuck out of my car,
00:05:08 go back to the office, get a nice desk job, you know?
00:05:11 Chasing bad checks or something, you hear me?
00:05:13 - Yes, sir.
00:05:14 - I don't think this was the training day he was expecting.
00:05:17 - No, he had this down on his itinerary.
00:05:20 There was a pamphlet.
00:05:21 - I wanna make detective.
00:05:22 - There you go.
00:05:23 You can do it, stick with me, you can do it.
00:05:25 Unlearn that bullshit they teach you at the academy.
00:05:27 No, don't bring none of that shit in here.
00:05:29 - I will do anything you want me to do.
00:05:31 - Oh, he's like, anything?
00:05:32 - Yes, daddy.
00:05:33 - Fine.
00:05:35 (laughing)
00:05:37 - How's your Espanol?
00:05:38 - Paso menos.
00:05:40 - Learn that shit, that shit'll get you killed.
00:05:42 These motherfuckers out here
00:05:43 plotting all kinds of shit behind your back.
00:05:46 - I should've learned Spanish in school.
00:05:47 I took Latin.
00:05:48 - You got a kid, right?
00:05:49 - That's right, little girl, nine months old.
00:05:52 - I got four boys.
00:05:54 You need a son, you let me know.
00:05:56 I'll hook your old lady up, you know?
00:05:58 - Make sure they're boys.
00:06:00 - You gotta hide that love deep inside you, you understand?
00:06:03 Otherwise these niggas out here on the street,
00:06:04 they'll find it, they'll use it against you,
00:06:06 and they will chew you up.
00:06:07 Never wear that wedding ring to work.
00:06:10 I'm serious about that.
00:06:13 - All right, all right.
00:06:14 - See, they give you these abrasive setups
00:06:17 and he's saying these outlandish things,
00:06:19 but then you're like, oh.
00:06:20 There's a point, you have to compartmentalize, I guess.
00:06:23 You can't be in the honeymoon phase and be on the beat.
00:06:26 - He's 17, but he can kill what the best of works for me.
00:06:30 - Jesus, he's an informant?
00:06:31 - Teammate, you know?
00:06:32 He gives me the heads up when big things are happening,
00:06:36 big transactions.
00:06:37 - Small fish in a big pond.
00:06:41 - 'Bout a big boom.
00:06:43 - See that hand I had?
00:06:44 - Yeah, I saw it, I saw it.
00:06:45 - All right, when was the last time you did a felony stop?
00:06:47 - A couple weeks ago.
00:06:49 - What practice?
00:06:50 - They look like college kids.
00:06:51 - I'll get education today.
00:06:52 - Ah.
00:06:53 (laughing)
00:06:54 - Gonna get a bushel of street smarts today.
00:06:57 - Police officers, let's see your hands.
00:07:03 - Police, put your hands up!
00:07:05 - Whoa.
00:07:05 - Straight ahead, don't look at me.
00:07:06 - Drive on the right side path,
00:07:08 put your hands on the windshield,
00:07:08 put it on the windshield.
00:07:09 - Oh my God, it's Frank Krantz.
00:07:11 - Sorry, sir, I don't know.
00:07:12 - Shut up, too late for that.
00:07:13 Give me that pipe you got down there on the floor, too.
00:07:15 Quickly.
00:07:16 - My mom gave me this pipe.
00:07:17 - I don't care who's--
00:07:17 - His mom.
00:07:18 - Now what are you doing down here?
00:07:20 You know this is a gang neighborhood, don't you?
00:07:22 Then don't come down here.
00:07:23 I see you down here again,
00:07:25 I'm gonna let the homeboys up the hill
00:07:27 run a train on your girlfriend.
00:07:28 - Oh.
00:07:29 - Oh.
00:07:30 - In the age of the internet,
00:07:31 everybody knows what a train is.
00:07:33 - Check that out.
00:07:34 It's a shitty dime.
00:07:35 Small hands, undeveloped seeds,
00:07:38 all the stems in it, see how immature it is.
00:07:40 (laughing)
00:07:42 - Let's roll some of this up and test it.
00:07:44 - A good narcotics agent should have
00:07:47 narcotics in his blood.
00:07:48 (laughing)
00:07:50 - What are you, a moped?
00:07:51 - Nope, you are.
00:07:53 - What?
00:07:54 Oh.
00:07:55 - You're not?
00:07:56 - No.
00:07:57 - What, you're Mormon or something?
00:07:58 You're Jesus-free?
00:07:59 - No, man, I'm not, this is my job.
00:08:00 - This is your job.
00:08:01 - You gotta know, you have to understand.
00:08:04 - No.
00:08:05 - Oh, yeah.
00:08:07 - In the middle of the serene, it's nice.
00:08:09 - What?
00:08:10 - Whoa, damn.
00:08:12 - If I was a dealer, you'd be dead by now, Moe.
00:08:14 Turn shit down on the street,
00:08:16 and the chief brings your wife a crisply folded flag
00:08:18 with what's wrong with you.
00:08:20 - Oh.
00:08:20 - Get the fuck out of my car, go back to the valley, rookie.
00:08:23 - Oh.
00:08:26 - Pooping, I was gonna say.
00:08:29 - He's feeling the peer pressure now.
00:08:32 - Let me smoke it, I'll smoke it.
00:08:34 - He's gonna cough up a lung.
00:08:37 (laughing)
00:08:39 (coughing)
00:08:41 - Virgin lung.
00:08:42 - Yeah.
00:08:42 (car honking)
00:08:43 - Man up.
00:08:44 - He's parked in the middle of the intersection.
00:08:46 - Get it, get it, get it.
00:08:47 Yo, shut the fuck up and just wait.
00:08:49 (laughing)
00:08:52 - He's gonna say, sir, take as long as you want.
00:08:56 (laughing)
00:08:58 - Dude would be stoned for hours.
00:09:02 Virgin lungs.
00:09:03 - Even on crappy, crappy buds.
00:09:06 - He's gonna say, I don't know if that's the job
00:09:08 you wanna do when you're high.
00:09:11 - This is just like the day Greg invited me
00:09:13 to start doing reactions with him.
00:09:15 It's exactly like this.
00:09:16 - This is how we react.
00:09:18 Hit it, John, hit it, John.
00:09:21 - Okay.
00:09:21 - Then he pointed a gun right at you.
00:09:24 - I learned a lot, though, I learned a lot.
00:09:25 - Yeah.
00:09:26 (dramatic music)
00:09:29 Yeah, you're gonna be seeing a bunch of different stuff.
00:09:32 - I love the shift in perspective, though, yeah.
00:09:35 - Yeah.
00:09:35 - Just like the things he's noticing,
00:09:36 both because of the trip, but also because of just,
00:09:40 I don't know, the complete rug pull.
00:09:42 - Yeah, I mean, also, too, you can also look at it
00:09:44 as like you can think from a criminal perspective
00:09:47 and how they think, too, in that state of mind, I guess.
00:09:52 Never.
00:09:57 (laughing)
00:10:09 - Gus, PCP, Primo, B-Dog, that's what you had?
00:10:14 - What?
00:10:17 - What?
00:10:18 No!
00:10:20 - Just now?
00:10:21 - Oh my God.
00:10:23 - It's everything.
00:10:24 - Oh, dude, he would be so out of his mind.
00:10:27 That's why I was wondering why the distortion
00:10:29 was like this crazy.
00:10:31 Oh my goodness.
00:10:32 - Oh, and they've done a good job escalating it.
00:10:34 - Yeah.
00:10:35 - Shit.
00:10:35 - Oh!
00:10:37 - Why did you do this to me?
00:10:38 - You're an adult, man.
00:10:40 Did anybody tell you to smoke that?
00:10:41 - What the?
00:10:42 - What?
00:10:43 - I gotta put a gun to your head.
00:10:48 - Oh.
00:10:49 - Yeah, it definitely didn't do that.
00:10:50 - Damn.
00:10:52 - That's all kinds of mess.
00:10:53 - This guy is so smart.
00:10:54 - Yeah.
00:10:54 - This guy is ruthless and cunning.
00:10:58 - And he's so well-written, too.
00:11:00 Did David Ayer, is this the movie David Ayer wrote?
00:11:03 - I think you're right, but I'm not 100% sure,
00:11:05 but I believe you are correct.
00:11:06 - I don't know if he directed this,
00:11:07 but it's hard to believe--
00:11:08 - No, it's not Fuqua who directed it.
00:11:09 - It's hard to believe the writer of this
00:11:11 is the director of Suicide Squad,
00:11:13 even though I know Warner Brothers
00:11:14 really messed with that film.
00:11:16 - Bro, get your ass in here.
00:11:20 - Oof.
00:11:20 - What's up, boy?
00:11:21 - All right, how'd he treat you?
00:11:23 All right, give me a pound.
00:11:24 - Oh, dang.
00:11:26 - I couldn't tell who this was.
00:11:27 - It's Stick.
00:11:28 - Oh, oh, okay.
00:11:29 - Scott Glenn, right?
00:11:30 - Yeah, you're probably right.
00:11:31 Just a little bit younger than when Daredevil was,
00:11:34 but I think you're right.
00:11:36 - Here, get that medicine up in you.
00:11:39 (laughing)
00:11:40 - Yeah, sober up, would ya?
00:11:42 - Where'd you grow up?
00:11:43 - North Hollywood.
00:11:44 - Hey. - Last name?
00:11:46 - Hoyt.
00:11:47 - You know Hoyt?
00:11:48 - Strong Safety, North Hollywood High.
00:11:50 - Huh? - That's right.
00:11:51 - What?
00:11:52 - How'd you know that?
00:11:54 - How did you know that?
00:11:55 - I follow all the good players.
00:11:57 - It's such a small city, you know?
00:12:00 - Of course.
00:12:01 - Here's a joke, boy.
00:12:03 Man walks out of his house on his way to work,
00:12:05 sees this snail lying on his porch,
00:12:08 shucks it over the roof into the backyard.
00:12:10 Snail lies there, dying.
00:12:13 (laughing)
00:12:14 Finally, after about a year,
00:12:17 the little guy crawls back on the porch.
00:12:21 - I think I know where this is going.
00:12:23 - Walks out of his house on his way to work,
00:12:25 and he says, "The (beep) is your problem?"
00:12:28 - Yes!
00:12:29 (laughing)
00:12:31 Yep, classic.
00:12:33 Somebody I know stole that from this movie.
00:12:36 - Figure that joke out, you figure the streets out.
00:12:38 - Oh-ho.
00:12:41 - I already figured 'em out.
00:12:43 It's all about smiles and cries.
00:12:46 You gotta control your smiles and cries,
00:12:49 because that's all you have,
00:12:51 and nobody can take that away from you.
00:12:53 - There's a bar, there's a low-keeper.
00:12:54 - You were just like him.
00:12:56 - What?
00:12:56 - Same silly-ass look and everything.
00:12:58 (laughing)
00:12:59 Saving the goddamn world.
00:13:01 - Yeah. - Yeah.
00:13:02 - Yeah, now that's some smiles and cries, baby.
00:13:04 (laughing)
00:13:07 - I'm less than a year away from my dream,
00:13:08 Philippine Islands, here I come,
00:13:10 and I ain't never coming back.
00:13:12 - That's right.
00:13:12 - Let me go with you.
00:13:13 You're invited.
00:13:15 - I hope they ride off into the sunset.
00:13:17 - I'm the zigzag, man.
00:13:18 Who the (beep) are you?
00:13:20 - I'm a cop, man.
00:13:21 Watch out.
00:13:22 - All right, don't shoot nobody.
00:13:23 - Once you get that beer in you, man,
00:13:24 that'll give you balance.
00:13:26 (laughing)
00:13:29 - Yeah, sober up, man.
00:13:30 - I'm curious how this is gonna affect home life.
00:13:33 This is gonna change him.
00:13:36 - Oh, man.
00:13:37 - He's gonna be the same wonderful person he was
00:13:39 when we met him at the beginning of the film.
00:13:42 - Stop the car, man.
00:13:43 - What? - Stop the car.
00:13:44 Stop the, stop the car.
00:13:45 I saw something.
00:13:46 - Oh, no.
00:13:47 - Hey, hey, hey.
00:13:48 (tires screeching)
00:13:51 - Oh, geez, dude.
00:13:54 Oof.
00:13:55 It's like how awkward his posture is.
00:13:56 Oh my God.
00:13:57 - Police officer, get away from the girl.
00:14:00 Get away.
00:14:00 (thudding)
00:14:01 - Whoa.
00:14:02 Damn.
00:14:04 (screaming)
00:14:05 (glass shattering)
00:14:06 Whoa.
00:14:07 (thudding)
00:14:08 Whoa.
00:14:09 Not a bad roll.
00:14:10 (grunting)
00:14:12 (thudding)
00:14:13 Ooh.
00:14:14 (thudding)
00:14:15 Ugh.
00:14:15 Damn, dude.
00:14:16 (thudding)
00:14:19 Whoa.
00:14:20 - Enough playing.
00:14:21 (thudding)
00:14:22 - Curious what she was doing.
00:14:24 - Any RoboCop in here?
00:14:25 - Nah.
00:14:26 Dead or alive, you're coming with me.
00:14:28 - Your move, creep.
00:14:29 Why you not in school?
00:14:31 - I was just going to a bitch party.
00:14:33 - You almost became a part of the bitch party.
00:14:36 - Yeah.
00:14:36 (laughing)
00:14:37 - We're gonna cut him loose?
00:14:38 - What, you wanna beat him up?
00:14:39 Go ahead, get down.
00:14:40 Protect and serve, brother.
00:14:41 - I got a punching bag at home.
00:14:42 - These two just don't play by the rules.
00:14:45 (laughing)
00:14:46 - What are you talking about?
00:14:47 This is textbook, Andrew.
00:14:48 - Textbook.
00:14:49 - Big boys have you grab your ankles, man.
00:14:51 - Come on, bitch.
00:14:52 I know people.
00:14:54 - That's how it starts.
00:14:55 - Who do you know?
00:14:57 - Yeah, oh shit, huh?
00:14:58 Huh?
00:14:59 - Whoa.
00:15:00 (laughing)
00:15:02 - You like the young girls, that's your MO?
00:15:04 - No.
00:15:05 - That's what you like, you like the young girls.
00:15:07 (thudding)
00:15:08 - Whoa.
00:15:09 (groaning)
00:15:11 - Told me to, you're a bitch,
00:15:13 isn't that what you said to me?
00:15:15 - Whoa.
00:15:16 - That's not what you said to me, so I'm lying.
00:15:19 Am I lying?
00:15:21 - No.
00:15:22 - Huh?
00:15:22 - Where is it?
00:15:23 - Oh.
00:15:24 - Where your pants at?
00:15:26 - Whoa.
00:15:28 (thudding)
00:15:29 - What's next you want?
00:15:30 - Whoa.
00:15:30 (groaning)
00:15:33 - Close your eyes.
00:15:34 Close your eyes.
00:15:36 (thudding)
00:15:37 (groaning)
00:15:39 - It's got like--
00:15:40 - Lucky I don't have more press in business.
00:15:41 (laughing)
00:15:42 - Oh man, that was intense.
00:15:45 (siren blaring)
00:15:46 - That girl's 14.
00:15:47 She all woman though, man, you taxed her ass for dead, man.
00:15:51 - That scene had very much like,
00:15:54 am I a clown, do I amuse you kind of energy.
00:15:57 - Yeah.
00:15:58 - He does have that kind of like Joe Pesci wildness.
00:16:01 - Oh, for sure.
00:16:02 That was for sure a good fellas vibe.
00:16:05 I mean those guys deserved it, but damn, that was intense.
00:16:09 - Yeah, it's weird and that's a great scene
00:16:10 to kind of ride the line 'cause a lot of people I bet
00:16:14 would probably split between the two approaches.
00:16:16 - You know they'd have killed you without hesitation.
00:16:18 That's why they belong in prison.
00:16:19 - For what?
00:16:20 They got beat down, they lost their rock,
00:16:21 they lost their money?
00:16:22 - Yeah, but they're gonna keep doing it again.
00:16:24 - Good guys, they die first, right?
00:16:26 To protect the sheep, you gotta catch the wolf
00:16:30 and it takes a wolf to catch a wolf, you understand?
00:16:32 - I mean, that's a fair point too.
00:16:35 I mean, he's making a fair point that I agree with,
00:16:38 but I still think those other guys belong in prison too.
00:16:41 I think they're both making good points.
00:16:43 - Don't play the middle, Andrew.
00:16:44 - I always play the middle, John.
00:16:46 - No matter what I say, you did the right thing.
00:16:49 Yeah, I noticed you applied that choke hold on.
00:16:52 I thought that was a no-no procedure, boy.
00:16:54 - Snake man.
00:16:57 - You did what you had to do.
00:17:00 That's right.
00:17:00 (howling)
00:17:02 - Wolf.
00:17:03 - Become the wolf, yep.
00:17:04 (howling)
00:17:06 - No, I said a wolf, not a rooster.
00:17:09 (laughing)
00:17:11 (howling)
00:17:13 - I thought I was a rooster, you know?
00:17:15 (laughing)
00:17:17 - It's okay, Maverick.
00:17:18 - You up your street IQ,
00:17:21 you're gonna do some damage out here, I guarantee you.
00:17:23 (laughing)
00:17:24 - Good choice of words.
00:17:25 - Yeah, but what's gonna happen to your soul in the process?
00:17:28 - Nothing, Andrew, he's gonna be fine.
00:17:30 (dramatic music)
00:17:33 - Is that, is that Snoop?
00:17:36 - Oh my God.
00:17:37 - No, they got Snoop in this.
00:17:39 - Crack.
00:17:41 - Crack.
00:17:42 - Nobody says crack, man.
00:17:45 - What I look like a sucker to you, n--
00:17:48 You rookie.
00:17:49 - Yo.
00:17:53 - Yo, give me a break, man.
00:17:54 Hey, yo, slow up.
00:17:56 - Slow up.
00:17:57 - I hate you so much.
00:17:58 - All right, just calm down, calm down.
00:18:00 (yelling)
00:18:02 - You must have to learn a little of a lot of languages
00:18:07 working this job.
00:18:08 - He's adaptable.
00:18:09 - No rocks?
00:18:10 - No rocks, man.
00:18:12 But I found this.
00:18:13 - Man, that ain't mine, man.
00:18:14 That mother (beep) planted that shit on me, man.
00:18:16 Put me in the front seat with him,
00:18:17 and I bet I'll whoop his ass.
00:18:18 - Oof.
00:18:19 (laughing)
00:18:20 - Where the rocks?
00:18:22 - I ain't got nothing on me.
00:18:23 I gave it up, dog.
00:18:25 - Where the rocks at?
00:18:26 - Oh, no.
00:18:27 - Open your mouth.
00:18:28 - What?
00:18:29 - What is you, a doctor now?
00:18:30 - I'm a dentist, open your mouth.
00:18:31 - Eh.
00:18:31 - Oh.
00:18:32 - Your partner already didn't search me, I'm straight.
00:18:34 - Yeah, okay.
00:18:36 You got a pen?
00:18:37 (laughing)
00:18:38 - To take a note with in your handy notebook.
00:18:42 - Huh?
00:18:43 - Nothing, man.
00:18:44 Come and get it.
00:18:45 (slurping)
00:18:47 - Wow.
00:18:48 - Whoa.
00:18:50 - Now what is that?
00:18:52 - Mother (beep) crack.
00:18:53 - That's right, Jimmy Crack Corn One.
00:18:55 - Whoa.
00:18:56 - You got crack and a gun.
00:19:00 Now you know with your record,
00:19:01 you can get 10 years for a bullet, do you know that?
00:19:03 Now you gonna give me a name now.
00:19:05 (gun cocking)
00:19:06 - Woof.
00:19:07 - He's a master interrogator.
00:19:09 - Your name's Sandman, that's all the (beep) I know, man.
00:19:11 Shit.
00:19:12 - Sandman.
00:19:14 - Flint Marco.
00:19:15 - I was gonna say Thomas Hayden Church.
00:19:17 That was a crazy interrogation scene.
00:19:20 And I hope they shot it with a bunch of different wigs
00:19:22 just for coverage, just you know, for the wrap party.
00:19:26 - Yeah, I need a res on a sandman.
00:19:27 - Uh-huh.
00:19:28 - That stuff doesn't fly anymore, man.
00:19:30 - Shoving a pen down.
00:19:32 - Woof.
00:19:32 - What if that guy complains?
00:19:33 - Marco.
00:19:34 (laughing)
00:19:36 - He's gonna file a formal complaint
00:19:38 and tell him Big Smooth Dog sent you.
00:19:40 - Yeah, you can see that complaint.
00:19:41 A cop shoved a pen in my mouth and crack came out.
00:19:43 - This also has like a Western flair to it too in a way.
00:19:46 - Buddy cop meets a Western.
00:19:48 - Cop neo-noir Western, yeah.
00:19:50 - Yeah.
00:19:51 - You'd feel the heat.
00:19:55 - The heat is on, John.
00:19:57 Hey, that rhymed.
00:19:58 - Hey, you got bars, Andrew.
00:20:01 - I'm here to serve this warrant.
00:20:03 - Come on, man, we can't do that.
00:20:05 - Hell yeah, we can.
00:20:06 We the police, we can do the (beep) we wanna do.
00:20:07 - Why don't we just get a real warrant?
00:20:08 - Listen, we're trying to get shit done, all right?
00:20:10 Just stand over there and don't get--
00:20:11 - Jeez.
00:20:12 - They gonna knock on the door and go, "Saracana?"
00:20:15 - Definitely, he loves movies.
00:20:17 - LAPD, open up.
00:20:18 - See, he came in at the underground.
00:20:19 She ain't even up here.
00:20:20 - Right, we gotta search one.
00:20:21 Unlock the door, please, man.
00:20:22 - Ain't nobody--
00:20:23 (gunshot)
00:20:24 - Whoa.
00:20:25 - Get down, get down, right down.
00:20:26 - Wow.
00:20:28 - Is anybody in the house?
00:20:29 - My nephew, Demetri, he in the bedroom.
00:20:31 He 10 years old.
00:20:32 - Oh, man.
00:20:34 - God, that artwork.
00:20:34 - That scene is intense.
00:20:38 - Yeah, I was noticing.
00:20:39 - Come on, dude, this is hilarious.
00:20:40 - Yeah, it's a riot.
00:20:42 Every, I was noticing that artwork too.
00:20:44 - Oof.
00:20:47 (laughing)
00:20:47 - Just feels like every moment something could pop off.
00:20:51 - That's what happens in comedies.
00:20:52 - I wanna see that warrant.
00:20:53 - Yeah, well, my partner has it.
00:20:55 He'll be out within a sec.
00:20:56 - Why the (beep) your back up?
00:20:58 - Uh, uh, uh, who is that?
00:21:01 Voice sounds familiar.
00:21:02 - Demetri, how you doing over there, honey?
00:21:04 You cool, you cool?
00:21:05 Come on.
00:21:06 - Oh, dude, no.
00:21:08 - Don't leave him hanging.
00:21:09 - No.
00:21:10 - I know he's pointing a gun at you guys,
00:21:11 but don't leave him hanging.
00:21:12 - That was very criminal.
00:21:14 - Demetri, close your eyes.
00:21:15 The punk-ass cop is gonna shoot me.
00:21:17 - Sit down right now.
00:21:19 - Okay, okay, okay, okay, everything is fine.
00:21:21 We made a mistake.
00:21:23 - Oh, good.
00:21:23 Oh, geez.
00:21:25 - I wanna see that goddamn warrant.
00:21:27 - There you go.
00:21:29 - Let's go.
00:21:30 - Ah, Hobsons.
00:21:35 - Demetri, you better give me my (beep) money back,
00:21:36 mother(beep) you ain't no police.
00:21:38 Dave Jackins, what y'all standing over there
00:21:40 for with that pretty foot?
00:21:41 (yelling)
00:21:43 - Oh, shit.
00:21:45 (laughing)
00:21:47 (gunshots)
00:21:48 - Of course, of course.
00:21:50 (gunshots)
00:21:52 - Jeez.
00:21:57 (gunshots)
00:21:59 - Jeez, man, just avoiding the crossfire alone
00:22:11 seems like a hazard.
00:22:13 - I'm gonna be on the six o'clock news
00:22:15 in an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs 'cause of you, okay?
00:22:18 Man, with the scandals and whatnot,
00:22:20 it is open season on misconduct.
00:22:22 - Oh, times do not change.
00:22:26 He took 'em there to give 'em a really tough situation
00:22:29 to lock down, see if he could do it.
00:22:32 Got both a kid and somebody yelling in your face.
00:22:35 - What are you talking about?
00:22:35 There was nothing tough about that.
00:22:36 It was easy and smooth as cum.
00:22:39 - It was most of my social interactions.
00:22:41 - Say you're serious about doing some good in the real world
00:22:43 and this is the place to learn.
00:22:44 But if this kind of shit shakes you up,
00:22:47 maybe you ought to go back to your division, you know?
00:22:48 Rather than watch command,
00:22:49 they'll give you a nice job, light and flat.
00:22:52 You gotta decide whether you're a wolf or a sheep.
00:22:56 - (laughs) Sheeple.
00:22:59 - Get your ink or go give him a hand.
00:23:03 - Wonder how many people got that tattoo after this movie.
00:23:05 - That one or the one from Starship Troopers.
00:23:08 Quite a good amount.
00:23:10 - I see a wolf in every man I ever met
00:23:12 and I see a wolf in you.
00:23:14 - Stone.
00:23:15 Yeah, a lot of murder investigations lead right in.
00:23:19 One way in, one way out.
00:23:21 You don't ever come up here without me, you hear me?
00:23:23 - A lot, a lot, a lot of red.
00:23:25 How you doing, man?
00:23:29 - What's that I do?
00:23:31 I flip the pigeons.
00:23:32 Let everybody know I'm here.
00:23:34 - Damn, who keeps the pigeons?
00:23:36 There's a lot of great color coordination in these scenes.
00:23:40 People working up on the roof, too.
00:23:43 - Didn't want to tell you, man,
00:23:44 appreciate what you did for my nephew.
00:23:47 - You better call me.
00:23:48 - (laughs)
00:23:49 - Man, I'm sick of this shit, man.
00:23:50 Can't stand it no more.
00:23:51 - (laughs)
00:23:54 Dude, I always love--
00:23:57 - A love and touch, you know.
00:23:58 Don't worry about it.
00:23:59 - Shots like that from up above.
00:24:01 - Policia, policia, senorita.
00:24:03 - Whoa, hello.
00:24:10 - Ava Mendez.
00:24:12 New guy, with Jaden.
00:24:13 - Hi.
00:24:16 - Nice to meet you.
00:24:17 Come in, welcome to my house.
00:24:19 - Oh no.
00:24:20 - It's like, this isn't Ryan Gosling.
00:24:22 - No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:24:24 - It's like, I thought I told you
00:24:25 to bring me a Ryan Gosling looking fella.
00:24:27 - Now this is all El Salvadorian food.
00:24:32 - Thank you, it looks great.
00:24:34 - And so do you.
00:24:36 - I have to go.
00:24:37 - That was the subtle way of saying
00:24:40 we're gonna go play Nintendo in the other room, right?
00:24:42 - Yeah, he loves games, man.
00:24:45 It's most of what Denzel does throughout this movie,
00:24:47 is just high scoring.
00:24:48 - Let's go.
00:24:50 Better meet in 15 minutes.
00:24:51 Forget that, let's go.
00:24:54 - Aw, God, how long was he in there for?
00:25:00 - Staying in care of business.
00:25:02 Gotta get that high score like he said.
00:25:04 - Esta creciendo un poquitito.
00:25:07 Esta creciendo un poquitito.
00:25:09 - Is this kiddo?
00:25:14 - I feel like it is.
00:25:16 - I got it.
00:25:17 - There's just enough Spanish in there I didn't know to,
00:25:22 - Yeah.
00:25:22 - It's either his dad's not there or that's his kid.
00:25:24 - My new guy that works on my squad, Jake Hoyt.
00:25:26 Captain Lou Jacobs.
00:25:28 You ever need to talk to the fed, you talk to him first.
00:25:30 Good man, he can take your back for you.
00:25:32 - He's an old kid, Dad.
00:25:34 - Is that Tom Berenger?
00:25:36 - And it was high dollar theft cases
00:25:38 for the French poodle crowd.
00:25:39 You know, if you lose a Picasso, he'll find it for you.
00:25:41 A Dodge fine, he's a good man.
00:25:42 - Pleased to meet you.
00:25:43 - Good.
00:25:45 - Oh no, a disappointment.
00:25:47 - I don't talk to dead men.
00:25:49 - Ain't dead yet.
00:25:51 Quite a long face, Doug, huh?
00:25:52 - Why is he so afraid to speak his mind?
00:25:55 - Serial burglar, sensing was today.
00:25:58 Judge is female, Landers.
00:26:00 - Yeah, I know Landers, she's a sharp lady.
00:26:02 (laughing)
00:26:04 - Oh no.
00:26:06 I want a woman version of Training Day.
00:26:08 - That's the remake.
00:26:09 - He's waiting to give a statement,
00:26:10 so he shoves his hand down his pants,
00:26:12 comes out with a gob of extra chunky jiff.
00:26:14 - Oh yeah.
00:26:16 - Now he's looking the judge right in the eyes.
00:26:19 Licks his fingers clean.
00:26:21 (laughing)
00:26:23 - Oh yeah.
00:26:24 That's comedy, boy.
00:26:27 - He can't go to prison, orders him to psychiatry.
00:26:29 - She fell for it.
00:26:30 - By the time she found out it was sandwich spread,
00:26:32 the order was signed, the guy's been transferred.
00:26:34 (laughing)
00:26:35 - Yeah.
00:26:36 (laughing)
00:26:39 - Jeez.
00:26:40 - Yeah, give him credit though,
00:26:43 shit he worked the system, deserves his freedom.
00:26:45 - Yeah, give him credit.
00:26:47 - That's the system's responsibility.
00:26:48 - I'm gonna find this guy on the street,
00:26:49 and I'm gonna do him.
00:26:50 - Whoa.
00:26:51 - The Russians don't care if they have a badge.
00:26:54 They'll whack you, you're the hopper jet out of here.
00:26:57 - He got tangled with the mob.
00:26:58 - He's cashing an account, one of my old ones, my first one.
00:27:01 Look, the guy's a high security risk anyway.
00:27:03 If I'm not around, who's gonna keep him off the radar?
00:27:05 - I'm just taxing him, that's all.
00:27:07 - Oh boy.
00:27:08 - What is his name?
00:27:10 - These guys are all characters.
00:27:11 - That's Raymond Berry, I believe.
00:27:12 - And then the guy with the goatee.
00:27:14 - I forgot that actor's name.
00:27:15 - Nice, nice, nice.
00:27:17 - What's up, Lazo?
00:27:19 - Oh, it's the bad guy in the mask.
00:27:21 - You got the picks and shovels?
00:27:23 - They're in the truck.
00:27:24 - You wanna dig a ditch?
00:27:25 - Nah, you are.
00:27:26 - Dig through the ditches and burn through.
00:27:29 - It's all good, legit.
00:27:30 Signed by the judge, okay?
00:27:31 Thanks to the Sandman.
00:27:32 Now listen up, he gives us shit, boom.
00:27:34 We're giving him lead.
00:27:35 Let's do this right so we can all go home
00:27:37 and do the wife or the girlfriend thing, all right?
00:27:39 (laughs)
00:27:41 - Oh, is that the villain from Legend of Zorro?
00:27:48 This guy right here.
00:27:49 (laughs)
00:27:50 (gunshots)
00:27:51 - Freeze up!
00:27:52 Down on the floor, man!
00:27:52 - What?
00:27:54 Wait, oh, is that, oh.
00:27:55 - Hey, new guy, watch him.
00:27:57 He moves, ha!
00:27:57 - Oh, no.
00:27:58 - What?
00:27:59 - Yeah, I'm on.
00:28:00 - You know what you're doing, son.
00:28:02 - What?
00:28:03 - That's for you.
00:28:04 - What am I supposed to do with this, wipe my ass?
00:28:07 - Oh, good shot.
00:28:10 - They just want to tax you, little bitch.
00:28:12 - What happens to me?
00:28:12 - I promise you, you never have to go back to prison.
00:28:15 - Sorry, orders is orders, dog.
00:28:18 - That sucks.
00:28:19 - Right here.
00:28:24 (gunshot)
00:28:25 - Woo-hoo!
00:28:26 The Los Angeles Chainsaw Massacre.
00:28:32 - Oh, yeah.
00:28:34 - We've struck gold.
00:28:36 El Diablo.
00:28:38 El Dorado, I mean.
00:28:39 - Well, you know, El Diablo, David Ayer, Suicide Squad.
00:28:42 It works.
00:28:43 - Think about it, it was a happy accident.
00:28:44 - Ooh, yeah!
00:28:46 - Jackpot.
00:28:47 - The IRS are friendly this time of year.
00:28:49 - Quarter million dollars you're holding
00:28:50 right there in your hand.
00:28:51 - Is it in?
00:28:52 - Four million in you.
00:28:53 - Damn!
00:28:54 - First time, you're not comfortable.
00:28:56 I'll hold it for you.
00:28:58 - What about you, are you comfortable?
00:28:59 - Oh, I'm comfortable.
00:29:00 - How's your comfort level?
00:29:01 - I'm very comfortable.
00:29:02 (laughing)
00:29:03 - John and I are comfortable, too.
00:29:04 We'll take his.
00:29:05 - Oh, yeah, please.
00:29:06 - We're here, we helped.
00:29:08 - Don't touch a thing.
00:29:09 Evidence.
00:29:10 (laughing)
00:29:11 - Jeez, man.
00:29:13 - I'm sure this job is everything he dreamed of.
00:29:17 - So patronizing.
00:29:18 - Hey, Jake, here.
00:29:19 - Shoot him.
00:29:22 - Oh, you want me to shoot him?
00:29:23 - Yeah.
00:29:24 - Come on, kid, come on.
00:29:25 - Hey, close the blinds.
00:29:27 - This sucks.
00:29:30 - That's when you think the line has been reached.
00:29:33 (laughing)
00:29:35 - Pow!
00:29:38 - Boom!
00:29:38 - Youngsters these days, huh?
00:29:39 You're not gonna shoot 'em.
00:29:41 All right, give 'em a chance.
00:29:43 (gunshot)
00:29:43 (groaning)
00:29:45 - You took fire coming through the door.
00:29:47 I need some time off, but lots of shades.
00:29:50 All right.
00:29:51 - Yeah, we definitely don't wanna--
00:29:51 - Damn.
00:29:52 - Definitely don't wanna damage the shades.
00:29:54 - Okay, all right, you ready?
00:29:55 - Kiss me, baby.
00:29:56 - One.
00:29:57 (gunshot)
00:29:58 (groaning)
00:29:59 - Yeah?
00:30:01 - You all right?
00:30:01 - Literally what they did with the one thing,
00:30:03 that was what they did to Alan Rickman, die hard.
00:30:06 (groaning)
00:30:07 - Mark and Paul, you kicked the door.
00:30:09 Jeff's the first one through.
00:30:10 Roger opens fire, hits Jeff twice, right?
00:30:13 - Wonder if he's still feeling comfortable.
00:30:16 - Our new guy Hoyt, he's in second.
00:30:18 Drops Roger with some fine shotgun work.
00:30:20 Who shot Roger?
00:30:21 - Wow.
00:30:22 - New guy, came in spraying.
00:30:22 Boy, okay, ambulance time.
00:30:25 (laughing)
00:30:27 - You're gonna get a medal of valor for this.
00:30:28 - Yeah, good--
00:30:29 - You didn't shoot him.
00:30:30 - Good job, Hoyt.
00:30:31 - You did.
00:30:32 - A Los Angeles Police Department narcotics officer
00:30:35 was killed today, serving a high risk warrant
00:30:39 in Echo Park, give me the bitch.
00:30:40 - Oh boy.
00:30:42 - The officer is survived by his wife and infant child.
00:30:46 You get the picture?
00:30:47 - Yeah.
00:30:48 - I got the picture.
00:30:49 (gunshot)
00:30:49 - Whoa, dude.
00:30:51 - That's what I'm talking about, J.
00:30:53 My, are y'all watching this?
00:30:55 That's it.
00:30:55 - It'd be my pleasure to put a hydra shock in that melon.
00:30:58 (laughing)
00:30:59 - Listen, everybody just take a deep breath
00:31:02 and just diffuse this thing, you hear me, Jake?
00:31:04 - You can't pull this shit on me, man.
00:31:05 I didn't sign up for this.
00:31:07 - What a mess.
00:31:08 - That's an order, put 'em down.
00:31:10 - I'm white knuckling here.
00:31:13 - This dude's like, call the damn ambulance.
00:31:15 - Five proven decorated officers says
00:31:18 that you're the shooter.
00:31:19 The investigators are gonna wanna pull a tube of your blood
00:31:22 to check for intoxicants.
00:31:23 What are they gonna find, J?
00:31:24 - Yeah.
00:31:25 - You've been smoking PCP all day, huh?
00:31:27 - Yep.
00:31:28 - Damn.
00:31:28 (laughing)
00:31:30 - I've been planning it all week, son.
00:31:31 - Oh boy, he's got him.
00:31:33 Shit.
00:31:35 Oh boy, he's good.
00:31:37 - If you're cool, you're a hero.
00:31:39 You're a virgin shooter above suspicion.
00:31:41 - We need to just kill your boy right now
00:31:43 and say Roger got him coming through the door.
00:31:45 - Oh boy, he's good.
00:31:47 - This is a good man, right?
00:31:48 He's got the magic eye, I can feel it.
00:31:51 Just had a little freak out.
00:31:51 - Don't come with the compliments, man.
00:31:54 Don't come with the sweet talk.
00:31:55 - He's a master manipulator.
00:31:57 This place is gonna be overrun with blue suits.
00:31:59 Go outside, clear your head, or shoot me.
00:32:03 - Ah.
00:32:04 Yeah, he's got him.
00:32:07 Jake's gotta come up with a plan now to get him.
00:32:10 - That man was your friend and you killed him.
00:32:13 Like a fly.
00:32:13 - Because he knows my first name?
00:32:15 This is the game, I'm playing his ass.
00:32:17 That's my job, that's your job.
00:32:19 - Yeah.
00:32:20 - I watched that sucker operate with impunity
00:32:22 for over 10 years and now I got it.
00:32:24 - Woof.
00:32:25 - The shit's chess, it ain't checkers.
00:32:27 - Yeah.
00:32:28 Bars.
00:32:30 - I believe him, but he's manipulating them all movie.
00:32:34 - Let's go downtown to the station.
00:32:36 You talk to my guys there and they'll walk you through
00:32:39 what you gotta say to the DA guys, okay?
00:32:41 - Just when I thought he was having
00:32:42 like an honest real moment.
00:32:45 I don't know.
00:32:45 - Dude, yeah, he's been manipulating him from--
00:32:50 - A trinity of bullet holes.
00:32:51 - From the moment he had that newspaper in his hand,
00:32:53 he's been manipulating him.
00:32:54 - Oh yeah, he's been running the whole movie.
00:32:57 - It's a masterclass performance,
00:33:00 but of manipulation too, as well as acting.
00:33:03 - What the hell we doing now?
00:33:05 - Forming a mines up in Chino, I promise that.
00:33:06 Take care of the family for me.
00:33:08 Bring him some food, you know, stuff like that.
00:33:11 Gotta help out the family.
00:33:12 - This might be the most interesting day of this man's life.
00:33:15 - Maybe, top five.
00:33:18 Whoa, is that Cliff Curtis?
00:33:24 - Is it?
00:33:24 Oh wow, it is.
00:33:26 - Dang.
00:33:27 - First movie I ever saw with him was a year after this
00:33:29 in one of my least favorite Arnold Schwarzenegger films,
00:33:32 Collateral Damage.
00:33:34 I very much disliked that film.
00:33:36 One of the few Arnold films,
00:33:38 but none more than everyone's favorite one,
00:33:40 Batman and Robin.
00:33:41 - Kick some ice.
00:33:43 Chill, John, all right, chill.
00:33:44 - I'm gonna go to the head, okay?
00:33:45 I'm gonna be two seconds, we rolling.
00:33:47 - Everybody said the heater was on,
00:33:49 so that's my second Batman.
00:33:51 - Let me get the CD player.
00:33:52 - Oh my God!
00:33:52 (laughing)
00:33:54 I was literally just wondering
00:33:55 if that guy would make an appearance.
00:33:57 - Did it again, huh?
00:33:58 Sniper.
00:33:59 - Damn it.
00:34:00 - Oh, and it's Tuco, damn.
00:34:02 - You're gone, Holmes, underneath your shirt.
00:34:04 - I'm serious.
00:34:05 - What is it, like a 380, stainless?
00:34:07 - Nine millimeter Beretta.
00:34:08 - Like this one here?
00:34:10 (laughing)
00:34:11 I seen this one.
00:34:13 I wanna see yours.
00:34:14 (laughing)
00:34:15 - It's nice to see him in a film film.
00:34:18 - Are you saying Bruce Almighty and Fast and Furious
00:34:20 are not film films?
00:34:21 - I mean, the butt monkey is the height of cinema, yes, but.
00:34:25 (speaking in foreign language)
00:34:27 - Hell yeah, Holmes.
00:34:28 - Who is your aim?
00:34:29 - Kinda like that.
00:34:30 (laughing)
00:34:34 - Yeah, right, I gotta go.
00:34:37 Yo, Alonzo, kick back and party, eh?
00:34:39 Ain't nothing out there for you.
00:34:42 - Oh, no.
00:34:44 - What?
00:34:45 - What?
00:34:46 - He jacked Roger, that's the default, huh?
00:34:48 - Alonzo, Holmes, I think he's a low down,
00:34:51 dirty, ruthless bat, though, eh?
00:34:53 But I like that, Holmes, I like that.
00:34:55 (laughing)
00:34:57 It's reminding me a little of Kreese, I like that,
00:35:00 I like that.
00:35:01 - Last week in Vegas, some Russian starts talking shit,
00:35:04 Alonzo, he just snapped, he just asked him this.
00:35:07 - What'd he say?
00:35:08 - Alonzo, he's into the Russians for a minute.
00:35:10 They gave Alonzo till tonight to pay up.
00:35:13 Good thing he got his blood money,
00:35:15 'cause there's a crew on standby.
00:35:17 If he don't turn up downtown with the cash by midnight
00:35:20 and not a minute after, he's dead.
00:35:23 (laughing)
00:35:25 - Roger, shit pushed in?
00:35:26 Shit pushed in.
00:35:27 - You ever had a monkey come out your butt?
00:35:29 - Had my shit pushed in.
00:35:30 - Oh, yeah, man, I had my shit pushed in, bro!
00:35:35 (laughing)
00:35:39 - Saw him in a coffee shop once.
00:35:41 He's a very interesting energy.
00:35:42 - Did you see a shit get pushed in?
00:35:44 - Yes, that's what he was doing at the coffee shop.
00:35:47 - What the?
00:35:48 - Oh, put the wrong kind of milk.
00:35:50 (gunshots)
00:35:52 - Ah.
00:35:53 - Oh.
00:35:54 (screaming)
00:35:56 - Oh, boy.
00:35:58 (screaming)
00:36:01 - Damn, man.
00:36:02 - Close the door, it's gonna be loud.
00:36:04 (grunting)
00:36:06 - Hold up, that's it.
00:36:08 Let me get his money first, yeah?
00:36:10 Hold up, that's it.
00:36:11 (laughing)
00:36:13 - Was that the 14-year-old's wallet?
00:36:15 - Oh, no.
00:36:16 - Hey, Smiley, you're gonna trip out.
00:36:18 Is that your little cousin or what?
00:36:20 - What the?
00:36:21 - Tell him what you did.
00:36:23 - No.
00:36:24 - Tell him what you did.
00:36:27 - Wow, that's crazy.
00:36:29 - I found it.
00:36:30 - I don't give a shit.
00:36:31 - I found it!
00:36:31 - Because?
00:36:32 - That girl was being (beep)
00:36:33 I saw these two (beep) drug addicts attacking her
00:36:36 and I stopped them.
00:36:37 - Don't lie to me!
00:36:38 - I swear to God!
00:36:39 - Don't lie to me!
00:36:40 - She was being (beep)
00:36:41 and I stopped them.
00:36:43 - Wow.
00:36:44 - I'm gonna get to the bottom of your bullshit.
00:36:47 She's my cousin, man.
00:36:48 She's a civilian.
00:36:49 Aim right and roll with her.
00:36:51 - Oh, collar.
00:36:52 - That's crazy.
00:36:53 - Collar my guy.
00:36:54 - I did not think that was coming back around.
00:36:56 - Cops talked to you today?
00:36:57 - No.
00:36:58 - Ah, yeah, tell me what happened, okay?
00:37:01 Don't bullshit me.
00:37:02 - I got jumped by these two crackheads today.
00:37:03 - You got jumped?
00:37:04 - Well, I think they wanted to like (beep) me or something.
00:37:07 I don't know.
00:37:08 - Oh.
00:37:08 - Nothing happened, okay?
00:37:09 'Cause this cop came.
00:37:12 (man grunts)
00:37:13 He kicked their asses like that.
00:37:15 - This cop, what he look like?
00:37:17 - He was a white boy.
00:37:18 - Wow.
00:37:20 - We're gonna talk more about this later.
00:37:22 - Okay.
00:37:23 - All right.
00:37:23 - Oh, that's amazing.
00:37:26 - Ain't gonna blast him or what?
00:37:27 - He saved your cousin.
00:37:28 Of course you're not.
00:37:29 - Who's telling the truth?
00:37:31 - Listen, sorry, you're part of the family now.
00:37:37 - I was forgetting my cousins back here.
00:37:39 - Put this on your head.
00:37:41 Mess up my floor.
00:37:42 You know this shit was just business, right?
00:37:46 - Oh, you better get--
00:37:48 - His cold eyes, man.
00:37:49 - All right, now you get Denzel, man.
00:37:51 After what you just did.
00:37:52 - Ethan Hawke is a great casting choice for this.
00:37:54 - Perfect.
00:37:55 - Like everyone's been great, obviously.
00:37:56 - Yeah, yeah.
00:37:57 - Denzel is like the centerpiece.
00:37:59 - Yeah, of course.
00:38:00 But Ethan is fantastic too.
00:38:02 Is that Eva Mendes' place he's going to?
00:38:06 - Probably.
00:38:08 - Yeah.
00:38:08 - Oh, Terry Crews, I thought that was
00:38:12 the back of his head earlier.
00:38:12 - I thought that was too, yeah.
00:38:14 - He's got a very recognizable head.
00:38:15 - I was about to say it, but I was like, I don't want--
00:38:18 - I'm here for Alonzo.
00:38:20 - Well, they do hate him, so they're gonna let him pass.
00:38:25 Yeah.
00:38:26 - Yeah.
00:38:27 All right, we respect the crazy on you.
00:38:30 - Hey, is your dad home?
00:38:34 - I never get drunk.
00:38:35 - Oh, man.
00:38:36 - I think that answers the question if it's his dad.
00:38:39 - I want you to find a good hiding spot.
00:38:41 Do you have a favorite one?
00:38:42 - The closet.
00:38:44 - Now stay in here.
00:38:45 Quiet, all right?
00:38:46 - All right, so, oh God.
00:38:48 (laughing)
00:38:49 - Stomach's in knots right now.
00:38:51 - Yeah, definitely got a lump in my throat right now too.
00:38:54 - You, against the wall.
00:38:58 - You passed the test.
00:38:59 You are not, you're in.
00:39:00 - Jeez, dude.
00:39:02 - What can you prove, huh?
00:39:04 Nothing.
00:39:05 Where's your evidence, huh?
00:39:06 - It's right there.
00:39:07 (gunshots)
00:39:09 - Whoa.
00:39:11 - Damn.
00:39:12 - Jeez.
00:39:14 On a swivel.
00:39:15 - That was a Scar-esque move from Lion King.
00:39:18 Throwing the ash at his face.
00:39:20 - Pocket sand.
00:39:21 - I see you.
00:39:22 (gunshots)
00:39:24 - Remember that fool in the wheelchair?
00:39:28 I think he got this.
00:39:29 - Talk about stoop dog like that.
00:39:33 - Oh no.
00:39:34 - Damn it.
00:39:35 - You see what I see, Jake?
00:39:36 Job number one, preserve life.
00:39:38 - Wow, using your son like that, dude.
00:39:41 - We're walking out of here together, mijo.
00:39:44 (groans)
00:39:45 - No, mijo.
00:39:46 - No.
00:39:48 No, ese el cucuy.
00:39:51 (gunshots)
00:39:55 - No, no, no.
00:40:02 - Jeez.
00:40:08 - He's got an appointment with the Russians.
00:40:10 (gunshots)
00:40:12 - Jeez.
00:40:17 Whoa.
00:40:20 (gunshot)
00:40:22 - Ah.
00:40:25 - Spikes everywhere.
00:40:27 - God, Tom Cruise makes those jumps
00:40:31 look a lot easier than they are.
00:40:32 - Dog.
00:40:33 Gotta get your parkour skills on point.
00:40:35 - Whoa.
00:40:39 - Oh, oh, jeez.
00:40:40 - Oh yeah.
00:40:51 - Wow.
00:40:53 - Everybody just minding their own business.
00:41:00 - Yeah, it's like just another day.
00:41:02 - Whoa.
00:41:03 - Oh, I thought he was going over the roof too.
00:41:04 - Yeah.
00:41:05 - Roof.
00:41:06 - Jump onto the hood of the car.
00:41:11 - Welcome to the party, pal.
00:41:13 - Whoa, hey.
00:41:18 - Hey, you called it.
00:41:20 - Not bad.
00:41:21 - I wanted to say that though,
00:41:22 welcome to the party, pal.
00:41:23 That would have made it not meta or anything.
00:41:26 - Oh, jeez.
00:41:35 - Ah, oh.
00:41:36 - Oh.
00:41:41 - It's no fun when the rabbit has a gun, is it?
00:41:46 - Come on, dig in.
00:41:47 (laughing)
00:41:48 - Oh my God.
00:41:49 - First dime who puts one in his head,
00:41:51 I'll make you a rich man.
00:41:52 - Problem is they all hate ya.
00:41:54 - What you gonna do, you gonna shoot me?
00:41:56 You gonna bust your cherry killing a cop?
00:41:58 (laughing)
00:42:03 - Jesus.
00:42:04 - It's in his pocket like it's a wallet.
00:42:06 - Give me that, give me, hit me.
00:42:10 - Come on, hit me.
00:42:12 - Doing his little Heath Ledger.
00:42:14 - Somebody drop this fool for me.
00:42:16 - Yeah.
00:42:17 Oh boy, is he gonna hit Denzel?
00:42:21 Nope.
00:42:22 - Huh.
00:42:23 - Hey.
00:42:24 - You got us twisted, homie.
00:42:25 We gotta put your own work in around here.
00:42:27 - Wow.
00:42:27 - And you ain't gonna do a damn thing
00:42:29 'cause you ain't gonna shoot no cop in the back, are you?
00:42:33 (laughing)
00:42:34 - Jeez.
00:42:35 - I'm gonna get that gun and then I'm gonna get that money.
00:42:38 I don't believe you got it in you, Jake.
00:42:40 I'm gonna go get it right now.
00:42:42 (gunshot)
00:42:43 - Ah.
00:42:43 - Oh boy.
00:42:45 - Please, Jake.
00:42:45 - Give me that money.
00:42:46 - It's not gonna happen.
00:42:47 - Jack mean now you gonna take my own money from me, huh?
00:42:49 - I told you that's my evidence.
00:42:50 You wanna go to jail, you wanna go home.
00:42:52 - Ah.
00:42:53 (laughing)
00:42:55 - Gotcha.
00:42:56 - Damn.
00:42:57 - Give me the money and let me go home.
00:42:59 Let me go home, Jake.
00:43:00 That's right, come on, Jake.
00:43:03 - Ooh.
00:43:04 You're going home to jail.
00:43:06 - You don't deserve this.
00:43:08 (whimpering)
00:43:13 - Go ahead and bounce on me.
00:43:14 Get up out of here.
00:43:15 We got your back.
00:43:16 - Ah, damn.
00:43:18 - Jake, come back here.
00:43:19 - God, man.
00:43:22 - You disloyal, fool-ass, bitch-made punk.
00:43:26 Jake!
00:43:27 - What a weasel.
00:43:28 - I need my money.
00:43:29 - That's literally what you did to him at that house.
00:43:31 - What a weasel.
00:43:33 - You think you can do this shit?
00:43:35 Jake, you think you can do this to me?
00:43:37 - Ooh.
00:43:38 - You mother (beep) will be playing basketball
00:43:41 in Pelican Bay when I get finished with you.
00:43:44 - Ooh.
00:43:45 - 23 hour lockdown.
00:43:46 You'll never see the light of day.
00:43:47 Who the (beep) you think you (beep) with?
00:43:49 I'm the police.
00:43:51 I run shit here.
00:43:52 You just live here.
00:43:53 - Oh, dude.
00:43:55 - Go and walk away,
00:43:56 'cause I'm gonna burn this mother (beep) down.
00:43:58 King Kong ain't got shit on me.
00:44:01 - Ooh.
00:44:02 - That's right.
00:44:03 You don't.
00:44:03 - That's the line, boy.
00:44:04 Oh, damn.
00:44:06 - Oh, what a day.
00:44:08 - What a day.
00:44:09 - What a mother (beep) day.
00:44:12 - Oh, dude.
00:44:14 - Oh, wow.
00:44:15 - Oh, God.
00:44:16 Oh.
00:44:17 - Got no money?
00:44:19 This the Russians?
00:44:21 - Yeah.
00:44:22 Oh, no.
00:44:23 - What have you got for us, police officer?
00:44:27 Where is the money?
00:44:28 (tires screeching)
00:44:30 - Ooh, damn.
00:44:31 Damn.
00:44:32 Oh, oh, no.
00:44:34 Oh, my God.
00:44:37 Oh, shit.
00:44:38 - Oh, boy.
00:44:46 - Wow.
00:44:48 Oh, man.
00:44:51 (screaming)
00:44:55 - You made the RoboCop reference earlier
00:45:00 that was just like Kenny in the boardroom in RoboCop.
00:45:04 - Or like Sonny Corleone, man.
00:45:06 - I guess, yeah, you can say that in Godfather, yeah.
00:45:08 - Damn.
00:45:12 - King Kong did not have shit on this guy.
00:45:17 - A narcotics officer was killed today
00:45:19 serving a high-risk warrant near LAX.
00:45:22 Officer Alonzo Harris was survived by his wife and son.
00:45:27 - Wow.
00:45:28 - A highly decorated officer.
00:45:30 - Wow.
00:45:30 - I wanted to see her and say,
00:45:33 "Honey, how was your first day?"
00:45:35 - Is that just to echo his mock police report
00:45:40 at the end of that?
00:45:41 Wow, written by David Ayer.
00:45:42 - That was a solid job of writing by David Ayer.
00:45:45 - And did he also, I know he directed Suicide Squad,
00:45:49 and again, obviously, I know Warner Brothers,
00:45:51 not to get into a hole.
00:45:52 - He started directing, yeah, afterwards.
00:45:53 - But did he write also Suicide Squad, or?
00:45:57 - Oh, I think so, yeah, of course.
00:45:58 I know everyone can have a bad day at work,
00:46:00 and obviously I blame Warner Brothers more
00:46:01 than I blame him, but.
00:46:03 - No, let's make the Training Day Review
00:46:05 about Suicide Squad. - Yeah, let's do it
00:46:06 about Suicide Squad, but no, seriously,
00:46:08 solid job by David Ayer.
00:46:10 I give him, and he's also a co-producer too,
00:46:13 but this is a master class in a character study
00:46:18 of master manipulation of his,
00:46:23 what was Denzel Washington's character's name again?
00:46:25 - Alonzo. - Alonzo, sorry.
00:46:27 I mean, his character was very, he was captivating.
00:46:31 - Sure. - I mean, when you want,
00:46:33 there's a lot of things he's saying where you're like,
00:46:36 shit, I don't want to agree with him,
00:46:39 but I'm agreeing with him, but then,
00:46:41 but damn it, he's pulling manipulation tactics
00:46:43 at the same time too?
00:46:45 I'm like, and I'm more on Ethan Hawke's side,
00:46:49 but again, and the performance from Denzel Washington
00:46:53 brought the character to life.
00:46:54 I mean, you can always write something on paper and go,
00:46:56 this is pretty good what I wrote,
00:46:58 but you need an actor to bring it to life at the same point,
00:47:01 and obviously Denzel, I don't--
00:47:03 - I think you need actors.
00:47:03 - Yeah, yeah. - Or writers.
00:47:04 - We got AI, we don't need actors.
00:47:06 But I mean-- - That was Macy Gray!
00:47:08 I should've said, that I knew it was her voice, man.
00:47:10 - Was Macy Gray in Spider-Man?
00:47:12 Was that the singer? - Yes.
00:47:13 - Yeah, okay. - Spider-Man 3, I think.
00:47:16 - Spider-Man 1, I thought.
00:47:17 - Oh, maybe you're right, I'm not sure.
00:47:18 She's in one of them.
00:47:19 - Yeah, the, whatever.
00:47:21 - Noel Guglielmi, that guy.
00:47:24 - Anyways, the point I'm making is,
00:47:26 I thought, I mean, Denzel obviously is the standout.
00:47:29 I mean, I just, the way his character is written,
00:47:32 like, you can't take your eyes off the screen
00:47:36 in every moment of dialogue.
00:47:37 The dialogue is just so damn crisp in this film.
00:47:41 It's so well-written.
00:47:42 And again, Denzel just does a great job
00:47:45 of bringing this manipulative, evil character
00:47:49 to life on the screen, and like,
00:47:51 what the life of a narc detective?
00:47:55 - Yeah, like a narcotics cop.
00:47:58 - What they go through on a daily basis.
00:48:00 Yeah, whatever it is.
00:48:02 What they go through on a day-to-day basis.
00:48:04 And then also, it was an interesting take
00:48:06 from Ethan Hawke's character,
00:48:07 someone who's akin to getting into this,
00:48:11 like, "Hey, I'm looking forward, it's my first day."
00:48:13 And then like, "Hey, you don't know what this life is like.
00:48:15 "Let me show you what it's all about."
00:48:19 And kind of manipulating him
00:48:21 and showing him the rough beats, if you will.
00:48:23 And kind of losing his soul in the process,
00:48:28 but he didn't allow it.
00:48:30 And I just really liked his character a lot, too.
00:48:33 Obviously, I thought Denzel just, I mean,
00:48:36 he's the stand-up, but I really liked Ethan Hawke.
00:48:38 I thought they had such incredible chemistry,
00:48:40 but what'd you think of the film?
00:48:41 - No, yeah, they have to.
00:48:43 And yeah, it's a film where like,
00:48:45 the Denzel Washington, obviously,
00:48:47 he is the biggest, flashiest, and not in a bad way.
00:48:50 Yeah, he is the force of nature at the center of everything.
00:48:55 And then you need somebody like Ethan Hawke,
00:48:57 who I'm curious to kind of go back
00:48:59 and look at what his filmog would have been at the time,
00:49:01 because I imagine this was probably a bit of a turning point
00:49:04 for his career as well, partly because, yeah,
00:49:06 it became such an iconic piece of cinema.
00:49:10 But also, you need somebody with that fresh face
00:49:12 and who, it's like, I think of the "Before Midnight" trilogy
00:49:17 or "Before Sunrise," whatever you wanna call it.
00:49:19 I think of him from like Richard Linklater things
00:49:21 and things that are just less gruff
00:49:24 and less harsh and gritty than this.
00:49:26 And the way he encapsulates, yeah,
00:49:28 that fresh-faced optimism that's then tempered
00:49:33 over the course of the movie, I think,
00:49:34 is really fascinating and wonderfully played.
00:49:38 'Cause too, I mean, Denzel is great because at that,
00:49:41 like, they're good at introducing you to him
00:49:46 because from the second they meet.
00:49:48 And the movie has a really nice sort of
00:49:50 just naturally unfolding feeling to the pacing
00:49:54 and the storytelling where it just feels like,
00:49:55 yeah, just new developments just keep on happening.
00:49:59 And it almost reminded me of,
00:50:00 instead of a Tarantino movie where,
00:50:03 or you think of "Reservoir Dogs" or something,
00:50:05 which you start with the plan going awry,
00:50:08 this is like you're slowly watching them build tension
00:50:11 until the plan, until shit just keeps hitting the fan
00:50:15 in increasing waves.
00:50:16 And I guess the point I was starting to make
00:50:18 was that, yeah, at the beginning of the movie,
00:50:20 you start to tap into him and you're like,
00:50:21 okay, maybe this guy has a bit of an abrasive demeanor.
00:50:25 He has a bit of an off-color sense of humor,
00:50:28 but yeah, he has a point that you need to understand
00:50:31 the real language and the real currency
00:50:35 of the place that you are trying to inhabit
00:50:38 and enact a change in.
00:50:39 You can't look at everybody from the outside.
00:50:41 You have to know and understand the experiences
00:50:45 of the people that you're dealing with.
00:50:48 And obviously through Alonzo's eyes,
00:50:51 oftentimes that means for worse, but it's great
00:50:54 because the further we get, the more you realize,
00:50:58 oh no, this is a guy who will do anything he can
00:51:01 to make it in the world.
00:51:02 It's just lucky he wound up in law enforcement,
00:51:05 but when he's appealing to Hoyt's humanity
00:51:09 and stuff like that, there were these little tiny moments
00:51:12 where it feels like, oh no, he's really getting honest
00:51:16 with him and then he'll come back around
00:51:18 like the second you're like, no, yeah.
00:51:20 Like it's well-written and performed and paced
00:51:23 and directed because so many times during the film,
00:51:26 I would have that moment where I'm like,
00:51:27 you know, this guy's a real great character.
00:51:30 He's got some real questionable morality,
00:51:31 but I get the point of what he's trying to say.
00:51:34 And here finally is like a nugget of truth.
00:51:37 And the second you start to think,
00:51:38 oh, maybe he's actually being, you know, again,
00:51:41 open and vulnerable or himself about something,
00:51:45 then that new piece of flattery and manipulation
00:51:49 comes around and you're like, ah,
00:51:50 I don't know if anything I saw was authentic from this guy.
00:51:53 And so yeah, that's a great performance in and of itself.
00:51:56 And then Ethan Hawke is a character
00:51:58 that you can really identify with 'cause he's most of us.
00:52:00 - Yeah, yeah, you can definitely relate to him.
00:52:02 - Yeah, he's got a good heart and a good moral compass.
00:52:05 And yeah, he's willing to step somewhat outside the lines,
00:52:09 but not, you know, everybody finds their own line
00:52:12 for how far they're willing to go into the depths.
00:52:15 And I feel like by the end of it, you know,
00:52:17 while I don't think he'll pursue this career path
00:52:19 anymore necessarily, it is like he's learned
00:52:23 to apply his moral instincts to the harsh reality
00:52:28 that he has seen.
00:52:29 And he's come to the conclusion that,
00:52:30 yeah, you do have to compromise and you do have to,
00:52:33 you know, stare into the abyss a little bit
00:52:36 and, you know, wear the wolf's clothing.
00:52:39 But you can draw the line as to how far into the true crime
00:52:43 and into, you know, being just the same as the people
00:52:45 you're looking down on that you wanna go, you know.
00:52:48 - Yeah, absolutely.
00:52:49 Really quickly, just before I touch on that,
00:52:51 I thought that was, I don't know if you saw it said
00:52:54 on the stunt people, it said David Ayer.
00:52:57 I had no idea he was into stunts.
00:53:01 Cool.
00:53:02 - I mean, I don't know, David Ayer seems like he's had,
00:53:05 I don't know what his upbringing was like,
00:53:09 but it seems like he--
00:53:10 - That's amazing that you can do writing, co-producing,
00:53:13 directing, and you can do, like, dude does it all.
00:53:15 I mean, again, I wasn't, not to get into Suicide Squad
00:53:18 stuff again, but I didn't know--
00:53:20 - That movie, I feel so bad for him because that movie
00:53:23 like eclipses every other part of his otherwise
00:53:26 relatively well-liked career.
00:53:28 - I'm just saying in general that dude can do it all
00:53:30 is all I'm, I actually know that guy,
00:53:32 T.R. Turner, stunt coordinator.
00:53:34 I actually used to work for him.
00:53:35 - Anyways, point I'm making is I agree with a lot
00:53:38 of what you said.
00:53:39 It was interesting to see like, you know,
00:53:42 when you were talking about Alonzo just like appealing,
00:53:46 you know, to Jake, Ethan Hawke's character,
00:53:51 just trying to appeal to his humanity and then like,
00:53:53 oh, this is like, you know, just, I was like,
00:53:56 you know what, at this point, again,
00:53:57 it was great character moment just for him,
00:53:59 but I'm like, at this point, he's manipulated him one,
00:54:02 for me personally, I'm like, he's manipulated him
00:54:04 one too many times.
00:54:05 I'm like, I've, I'm not falling, me personally,
00:54:08 I'm like, I'm not falling for it anymore, but he's good.
00:54:10 Like I get where he's, what he's trying to do with him
00:54:14 and he's got Jake by the balls at this point,
00:54:18 no pun intended, but the planning that he came up with too,
00:54:22 like from the moment he had that newspaper in his hand,
00:54:24 he knew exactly how to push Jake's buttons.
00:54:27 And I loved like the way he was scheming
00:54:29 and the elaborate planning he came up with just in terms
00:54:32 of the whole day, just, and as the plan,
00:54:34 as the film was unfolding, just as we learned,
00:54:37 he owed money to the Russians, the millions of dollars,
00:54:40 whatever he owed, and then, you know,
00:54:42 he got him to smoke the PCP or whatever,
00:54:45 and then he'd know like, okay, so once I get him,
00:54:47 once I get this money, I'm gonna put him in here
00:54:50 and have him do this so that he's gonna have to go along
00:54:53 with the plan, otherwise he's gonna be, it's just,
00:54:55 it was really elaborate and I love that.
00:54:57 Like, even though again, I was not rooting for Alonzo
00:55:01 in any way, shape or form, like I like intelligent villains.
00:55:04 Like again, I'm not, again, not rooting for them,
00:55:08 but it's fun to watch them on screen.
00:55:11 Like it's something where I enjoy,
00:55:13 it's satisfying to watch.
00:55:14 - Yeah, he's like the devil.
00:55:16 He's like, you know, he, at least through the lens
00:55:18 of the Jake character, it's like, yeah,
00:55:20 you meet a guy who's your superior,
00:55:22 who's kind of living the career that you're trying
00:55:24 to get to and who is always kind of, I don't know,
00:55:28 he's always like messing with you,
00:55:30 but then all of a sudden you'll find yourself
00:55:31 in like the worst situation and then he's stringing you along
00:55:35 and just, yeah, like they're back and forth.
00:55:38 And too, like the incredible supporting cast.
00:55:40 This was a really well cast movie too.
00:55:42 And I feel like there were too many character actors
00:55:44 to name and I mean, you had Stoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.
00:55:47 - Cliff Curtis.
00:55:48 - Cliff Curtis was in there and then Noah Kuliami
00:55:52 has been in so many other things
00:55:53 and like tons of other character actors too.
00:55:55 - I mean, yeah, this was really an ensemble.
00:55:57 And like the way that they chose the casting,
00:56:00 you have like the upper table guys who he meets with
00:56:04 in the restaurant to like really kind of give us the scoop
00:56:08 on his, you know, mess up with the Russians and everything.
00:56:11 And then you have, yeah, just like so many
00:56:14 incidental characters and sure, like these people were,
00:56:17 I think a lot of these actors were either getting established
00:56:19 or, you know, sort of on that rise, certainly of the,
00:56:23 of the, you know, I mean, younger cast,
00:56:26 but you know, like people in like the Ethan Hawke
00:56:28 age range on the cast.
00:56:29 But yeah, like just so much life and like that moment
00:56:33 at the end when they have that final showdown
00:56:35 in the neighborhood and everyone is watching this happen
00:56:39 and this, and it's this guy they were taunting moments ago
00:56:42 and just like, you know, you get the whole idea of quote,
00:56:47 the streets to sound as white as possible.
00:56:49 You know, you get the lay of the land
00:56:51 and the sort of idea of what you're dealing with
00:56:54 so much through Alonzo's perspective,
00:56:57 that when you get to that final moment
00:56:58 and you see his power removed,
00:57:01 and you see just how he just constantly,
00:57:03 just at every single turn is just finding a new way
00:57:06 to wiggle his way out of the situation.
00:57:08 Like you see kind of a more stark view of, you know,
00:57:13 the community kind of servicing itself almost.
00:57:17 It's like, everybody has finally realized like, yeah,
00:57:19 we don't like this, this, you know, rookie cop
00:57:22 who keeps coming here either.
00:57:23 We're, you know, we're pitted against each other
00:57:25 by the system and yet we can tell somehow
00:57:27 that this guy is probably doing this
00:57:31 for something outside of both like,
00:57:34 your average police reason and your average,
00:57:37 you know, crime corruption reason like,
00:57:39 and when that guy puts the gun down,
00:57:42 it's a great symbolic moment
00:57:43 'cause it could have been really cheesy.
00:57:44 It could have been like an, oh, Captain, my Captain,
00:57:46 like, oh, everybody in the neighborhood just hoists
00:57:48 this rookie cop up on their shoulders.
00:57:50 But like, it really did feel like a Western showdown
00:57:53 or something and yeah, it's like it puts the gun down
00:57:56 partly to say like, yeah, we're not gonna play
00:57:58 into this system of corruption and exploitation
00:58:02 that you have, as much as you pretend to be our friend,
00:58:06 that you have us under the boot heel of so much of the time.
00:58:09 You can fight for yourself, like, you know,
00:58:11 this situation has to play out.
00:58:13 But even that has this sort of weird, almost, I don't know,
00:58:18 mystical sort of slight peripheral magic about it
00:58:22 where it's like, yeah, it is both, you know,
00:58:25 like I'm equipping you to handle your own shit,
00:58:27 but also I'm laying down the sort of statement
00:58:30 on all of our behalves that we don't wanna be a part
00:58:32 of this anymore and if he's gonna help remove you,
00:58:35 then he's good by us.
00:58:36 And like, that was a really striking moment.
00:58:40 - Oh, definitely.
00:58:41 - Among so many striking moments.
00:58:42 I mean, this again, you know, it's post-Tarantino a bit.
00:58:47 I mean, it's got, yeah, like it's very own crime-informed
00:58:51 tone and grittiness and harshness and realism,
00:58:54 but it's super dialogue-driven.
00:58:56 All the characters and places you go are distinct,
00:58:58 but they all really feel like these different parts of LA.
00:59:01 And I gotta, I mean, like hats off.
00:59:03 Like I understand why this launched both Antoine Fuqua
00:59:06 and David Ayer, because like the,
00:59:08 this is one of those pieces where like everything
00:59:11 comes together, the locations, the costuming,
00:59:13 the color choices, the performances, and the writing.
00:59:17 It feels like it was authored by,
00:59:19 so I know David Ayer's like a white guy,
00:59:21 but like I feel like it has that sense of somebody
00:59:25 who has lived in aspects of this world at least
00:59:28 and done a good amount of their research, it seems like.
00:59:31 And yeah, like it had a rhythm and it had a color
00:59:35 to the dialogue and to the scenery and to the storytelling,
00:59:38 but without feeling like another Tarantino joint
00:59:42 or something or a Tarantino wannabe,
00:59:43 but having all these different elements of that stuff,
00:59:46 the more subversive stuff that was coming up in the '90s,
00:59:49 and then you're at crime movies and your noir stuff
00:59:51 and your cowboy stuff, and yeah,
00:59:53 there's like so much kind of packed into it.
00:59:55 And it's uniquely very sort of urban LA.
00:59:58 - Yeah, and just adding to what you just said,
01:00:01 I thought a lot of the scenes too were extremely intense.
01:00:04 I mean, you got that one scene where the two guys
01:00:06 were about to, what they were about to do
01:00:08 with Cliff Curtis's cousin,
01:00:11 and then he was pointing the gun at his bottoms
01:00:15 and just scenes like that were extremely intense.
01:00:19 - And building us up with moments like that
01:00:21 that so many people probably fantasize about
01:00:23 if they're considering going into policing of any kind.
01:00:27 - Yeah, and also too, just building off of that too
01:00:29 from that intensity, I love again what David Ayer did.
01:00:33 Usually I'm able to pick up on foreshadowing and stuff,
01:00:35 and when he picked up that pink wallet,
01:00:38 and I wasn't even thinking in the back of my head,
01:00:40 like, how's this gonna turn,
01:00:42 like, why is he even picking up that pink wallet?
01:00:43 What's that gonna turn into later in the film?
01:00:45 Like, usually I'm able to pick up on little things.
01:00:47 - He's gonna get shot in the pink wallet,
01:00:49 it's gonna save him.
01:00:50 - I mean, usually I would have said something funny like that.
01:00:52 - In a way, they kind of did that,
01:00:54 but without it actually being like
01:00:55 he puts it in his breast pocket.
01:00:57 - Yeah, yeah, no, for sure.
01:00:59 But again, and I know we did talk about it
01:01:01 really quickly, briefly in our reaction,
01:01:04 but I know LA is a ginormous place,
01:01:08 and of all the places for Alonzo to bring him to,
01:01:11 it was her cousin.
01:01:13 But again, it works within the constraints of the story
01:01:16 that I've had, like I said, and I'm sure you,
01:01:19 I've had many times where I'm like something random,
01:01:22 and like, how did this person of all places go here?
01:01:26 Things have happened in my life randomly,
01:01:28 so I truly do buy that, honestly.
01:01:30 - Yeah, it has enough, I think,
01:01:32 the rest of the movie is kind of harsh and tempered enough
01:01:36 that that little piece of magic helps,
01:01:40 or at least I justify that little piece of magic
01:01:42 because it is like a slight moment of that
01:01:45 in, yeah, an otherwise very grounded experience
01:01:48 that also hearkens to that weird magic
01:01:51 that can sometimes happen in life,
01:01:52 and to the fact that there is a different kind of morality
01:01:56 than just the one that's being posed by Alonzo's character.
01:02:00 Like these guys, they are too part of this greater
01:02:03 sort of underworld business,
01:02:06 and yeah, there is some sense of,
01:02:08 you know, you looked out for us, though,
01:02:10 and it's such a great tense scene,
01:02:12 and such a, I thought they,
01:02:15 I'm glad they didn't jerk us around with that,
01:02:18 like, oh no, she's gonna tell the truth.
01:02:20 Like, it played out very realistically,
01:02:21 but also with a great breathless catharsis.
01:02:24 - And also, too, I'm glad, like,
01:02:26 because he was being manipulated by Alonzo O'Fillm,
01:02:29 one of the good things he was able to do,
01:02:31 like being himself, like, it was kind of like
01:02:33 the Mr. Miyagi thing in "Cobra Kai,"
01:02:35 where he was in Okinawa, you know, where, you know,
01:02:38 it's so the, well, no, what I was saying,
01:02:40 no, what I was saying is, you know,
01:02:41 put a little good out in the world,
01:02:42 some good will come back, that type of thing,
01:02:44 where, you know, he was able to do a good thing there,
01:02:47 and then that kind of saved his life in the end there.
01:02:49 - Yeah. - That type of thing
01:02:50 is what I meant to say there.
01:02:52 - And as much as Alonzo is like, you know,
01:02:54 this isn't what we deal with, you know,
01:02:55 you leave that to the garbage men, or whatever,
01:02:58 at the same time, it's like, no,
01:03:00 it bolsters the Jake character's, again, sense of morality,
01:03:03 like, no, you know, yeah,
01:03:06 you do have to get your hands dirty,
01:03:08 you do have to show that you've been through some stuff,
01:03:09 and you have dirt on your face,
01:03:11 but you can, you know,
01:03:14 reap a little bit of that good that you sow
01:03:16 if you make an effort to sow it.
01:03:18 - Yeah, for sure. - And I think, yeah,
01:03:20 this is a very rich,
01:03:22 this movie has a little bit of everything,
01:03:24 'cause yeah, it's like, it's super edgy and harsh,
01:03:26 and like, there are aspects of it,
01:03:27 it almost reminded me of "Boogie Nights" a little bit,
01:03:29 in the way that, like, it's not,
01:03:31 there's not as much of a rise and fall
01:03:33 in terms of like, this is awesome,
01:03:34 but there is like a mounting sort of set of circumstances
01:03:37 that once they reach the moment where they kill Roger,
01:03:40 I thought that was like,
01:03:41 we're getting towards the end of the movie,
01:03:42 but really, that's just a turning point
01:03:45 in Ethan Hawke's character,
01:03:46 where now we have to go through the true descent,
01:03:49 you know, the true fall after the rise, you know.
01:03:52 - He's had enough.
01:03:53 - Like, he's been kind of falling since the beginning,
01:03:56 but certainly from the outside,
01:03:57 we're watching Alonso kind of reach a zenith,
01:04:00 and then a great fall, and yeah, I don't know,
01:04:04 like, the way that that really allows
01:04:07 for so many things to sneak back up on you,
01:04:09 I think is really nicely handled, I don't know,
01:04:12 there's so much to a movie like this,
01:04:14 and yeah, it's got those aspects that are kind of cool,
01:04:16 but also those aspects that make you think
01:04:18 that are authentic and harsh and difficult,
01:04:22 and yeah, it shows you kind of how much times,
01:04:24 I guess, kind of don't change,
01:04:25 I mean, not that we know the most about, you know,
01:04:28 the true ins and outs of crime and police work
01:04:30 and everything, but it seems like, you know,
01:04:32 corruption and the attitude about how to interact
01:04:36 with crime and things like that is always, like,
01:04:40 under debate, and this is like the most age-old
01:04:43 sort of set of characters clashing with each other,
01:04:47 trying to figure out just what to do
01:04:48 about the lawlessness that still, you know,
01:04:52 exists beneath the law, you know.
01:04:54 But yeah, yeah, really striking, really classic,
01:04:57 like, I get why this is a classic,
01:04:59 and I can tell I'm gonna be kind of reflecting on it
01:05:01 for the days to come.
01:05:02 - Yeah, and also why Denzel is so praised
01:05:04 for this film as well.
01:05:05 - Yeah, yeah, a lot of great work across the board.
01:05:08 So what did you guys think?
01:05:09 Let us know your thoughts,
01:05:10 what are your favorite moments from the film?
01:05:12 What's your insight on it?
01:05:14 Were you there when it dropped?
01:05:16 I gotta imagine this was a very formative film
01:05:18 for a lot of people, and yeah,
01:05:19 just to give some praise, too, again, to Antoine Fuqua,
01:05:22 like, I really liked the direction,
01:05:24 the way they shot it,
01:05:25 the way they really used perspective,
01:05:28 and they really used the shadows and the heat,
01:05:30 and just so much of that authentic,
01:05:32 like, this movie felt really well-lived in,
01:05:35 and again, that comes from all sides,
01:05:37 but really, you need, like,
01:05:38 this is one of those movies that comes from the magic
01:05:40 of having, like, a beautiful blend of a writer,
01:05:44 director, and cast, you know, scenario,
01:05:46 really firing on us.
01:05:47 - Trying to be a collaborator.
01:05:49 - So yes, leave us your thoughts, gang,
01:05:50 leave a like on the video,
01:05:51 and we will catch you next time for another piece of cinema.
01:05:55 Much love, and don't do crime.
