00:02 - I wanna ask you about two rookies,
00:05 Tyree Wilson and Ja'Korian Bennett real quick.
00:08 Tyree looked like he might've been hesitating a little bit,
00:11 trying to break down what was gonna happen
00:13 when it was coming to him.
00:14 What'd you see from him on film?
00:15 And then Ja'Korian Bennett,
00:17 what'd you think about his open field tackling
00:19 and his willingness to put his head in there
00:20 and get it done?
00:21 - Yeah, I think all our young guys, you know,
00:25 are gonna learn a lot from this tape.
00:27 I mean, this is their first opportunity to play
00:30 in a regular season National Football League game.
00:33 And, you know, there's, you know, Michael Maher
00:36 and Tyree and Byron and Ja'Korian, you know,
00:40 they all, you know, they were all in there
00:43 for a number of plays,
00:44 and they're gonna see some good things that they did,
00:47 and they're gonna see some things
00:48 that they didn't do very well, you know what I mean?
00:50 And so, great opportunity to learn from what we saw.
00:55 I think that's really the case for all of our players,
00:57 but our young players especially
01:00 are gonna see some things that, you know,
01:02 that they can do better.
01:04 And I think they probably felt
01:06 a much different speed of the game, you know,
01:08 as you go into the regular season from the preseason.
01:11 It's just a different speed, you know?
01:13 And so everything happens a little quicker.
01:14 So I think that's what we'll see.
01:17 And JB did a nice job, had a few opportunities there
01:20 to make some open field tackles.
01:22 And I thought he did a decent job
01:24 of getting the guy to the ground.
01:25 So our corners need to do that, you know,
01:27 if they're gonna go in there and crack the safeties
01:29 and all the rest of it.
01:30 So at some point, the corner's gonna have to be out there,
01:33 isolated on the edge one-on-one.
01:35 And I thought JB did a good job
01:36 of getting him to the ground.
01:39 - Hey, Josh, what'd you see from Jerry Tillery on film?
01:41 I know he had a sack,
01:42 also played a little bit on the outside.
01:44 - Yeah, JT played a multitude of roles for us, you know,
01:49 and I thought, you know,
01:51 there was some really good football plays, you know,
01:54 in the running game, strong on the edge,
01:56 did some things in the pass rush, you know,
01:58 had the one off sides penalty in a fourth down situation
02:01 that we'll learn from.
02:02 And there was a couple of things that certainly
02:04 we can clean up, you know, in the run and in the rush,
02:07 but Jerry's a good football player.
02:09 And, you know, he's been unselfish.
02:12 He's played a lot of different roles,
02:13 worn a lot of different hats for us.
02:15 And, you know, he contributed to the success
02:19 that we had on defense yesterday in both phases.
02:23 - Josh, two questions.
02:24 Any chance that Chandler Jones is going to be joining
02:26 you guys in West Virginia and for the game on Sunday
02:30 and saw that, you know, Hunter didn't really get involved.
02:33 Is that sort of just the way the game organically went
02:36 in terms of where the ball went?
02:38 - Yeah, I think that's just the way it goes.
02:40 You know, I mean, there are games where, you know,
02:44 certain things happen and the ball gets targeted
02:48 to the different guys differently.
02:50 And, you know, we're trying to tell our quarterback
02:53 to read the defense and then try to go to the best spot
02:56 with the ball as opposed to read the defense
02:59 and go to one guy with the ball, you know?
03:01 And so some games that might mean the player in the slot
03:04 gets 10 or 12 targets.
03:06 Some games it might mean two or three.
03:07 And yesterday was one of those ones where just the game
03:10 played out a certain way and the coverage dictated
03:13 that, you know, the ball went elsewhere.
03:15 So that's what that is.
03:17 And I have no updates on Chandler.
03:19 I'm going to stick with what I said last week.
03:21 - Go ahead, Paul.
03:27 - Hey, Josh.
03:28 Am I on mute?
03:31 Yeah, okay.
03:32 Hey, Josh, how much more would you like to...
03:34 Although that's the case.
03:35 I know the game's going to...
03:36 - I can't hear what he's saying, Cam.
03:39 - So watching with Josh Jacobs...
03:41 - We'll come back to Paul.
03:41 We'll come back.
03:42 Go, Levi.
03:48 - Hey, coach.
03:49 Obviously you had a nice rotation going on at rusher.
03:53 Obviously Malcolm Coons, he got a couple of snaps.
03:56 Can you just evaluate what you saw for him last night?
03:59 - Yeah, Malcolm played a number of snaps on defense
04:04 and also played basically on every kicking play too.
04:07 So, you know, Malcolm is a guy that, again,
04:11 wears a lot of hats for us, does a lot of different jobs,
04:16 you know, had some pressure on the passer and did his job,
04:20 I'd say for the most part in a running game
04:22 and in the pass rush.
04:23 So Malcolm's a young, improving player that, you know,
04:27 we're looking for some things this year
04:29 for Malcolm in both areas.
04:31 - Go ahead, Mark.
04:35 - Josh, what does it tell you about,
04:39 or how does it help moving forward to win a game
04:43 like you did yesterday, making those mistakes
04:46 and overcoming them?
04:47 And on the other side,
04:48 how important is it to clean all that stuff up?
04:51 - It's obviously the most important thing we can do
04:56 is learn from this game, you know,
04:59 and the things that we need to do better,
05:02 which are numerous across the board, you know,
05:05 offensively, defensively, in the kicking game.
05:07 There's many things that we can do better
05:10 and need to do better as we go forward.
05:11 So that's my job as the head coach.
05:14 Our job as the coaching staff
05:16 is to try to identify those things,
05:17 which we have this morning and last night.
05:19 And, you know, we're going to be hard at work
05:22 at trying to, you know, improve in many areas.
05:25 I think that's really the nature
05:27 of the National Football League this week
05:29 and moving forward in the month of September is,
05:31 you know, a lot of times this is your first opportunity
05:33 to see your football team play a game.
05:36 And now it's time to really make the corrections
05:41 that are necessary for you to get better.
05:42 So, huge point of emphasis for us,
05:45 obviously, moving forward is to try to make progress
05:48 and improve in every area.
05:49 And at the same time, you know, it's an imperfect game.
05:54 You know, it's hard to win on the road in this league.
05:57 And to win close games and to try to play
06:01 some of your best football in the fourth quarter to do it,
06:04 those are all traits that you're going to need
06:06 at some point in time during the season, you know,
06:08 and those will all serve you well at the end of the year.
06:10 - Josh, along those lines, how did you feel about
06:15 kind of how the team responded to getting a victory
06:17 and were you happy with how they took it
06:19 and also just kind of moving forward from that,
06:22 saying, "Hey, we're about to settle
06:23 for just winning one game,"
06:24 and kind of moving forward from it.
06:25 And then also, did you have an update on Jacoby?
06:28 - Yeah, I don't have any update on Jacoby.
06:29 He's in the protocol, so, I mean,
06:31 that's all I can say about that.
06:34 So, and then, you know, I think our team is really,
06:39 look, when you win a game in the league,
06:45 you know, you should be excited about doing that.
06:49 It's hard to do that.
06:50 I mean, every game's hard, you know?
06:52 It doesn't matter who you play, it doesn't matter
06:53 where you play.
06:54 They're all difficult because every team has good players
06:57 and good coaches and it's tough to win.
06:59 And so I think our team responded appropriately to that,
07:02 to winning a division game on the road against a good team,
07:05 who's also well-coached and got good players.
07:07 And so that's a good thing.
07:10 They should be happy about that.
07:11 And at the same time, I think they knew right away,
07:15 it didn't take very long.
07:16 We weren't even on the plane and they knew that,
07:18 you know, there's a lot of areas where we need to improve
07:22 and we can improve.
07:23 I loved our attitude this morning.
07:25 I've already seen everybody this morning.
07:27 So they have a great focus about trying to fix the things
07:31 that they didn't do well individually
07:33 or collectively as a unit,
07:34 which obviously will only help our team.
07:36 - Hey Josh, I hope you got me now.
07:40 - I do now.
07:41 - Okay, 47 snaps for Josh Jacobs.
07:45 Did you surprised by that or what did you see from him
07:47 coming out after missing all of training camp
07:48 in the off season and everything,
07:49 and you going out there and going full bore?
07:51 - Yeah, it was an interesting, like I said last night,
07:54 it was an interesting game because I think he played
07:57 in the teens in the first half, you know,
07:59 and it was like, you know,
08:00 normally you'd like your play count to be a little higher.
08:03 So just by the nature of how the game went,
08:07 I didn't think we would be able to push it to 65 or 70,
08:11 but because we were so low in the play count
08:13 in the first half,
08:15 I felt like we would just let him kind of determine
08:17 how he felt as he went into the second half.
08:19 So he's a football player and he wants to play football.
08:22 So love having him out there.
08:24 Again, there's going to be things that we're going to see.
08:26 He's, nobody's more critical on his own performance
08:29 than JJ.
08:30 So he'll see things that he can do better
08:32 and he'll work really hard at improving as will our team.
08:36 So I was not surprised that he was okay to do it.
08:40 And like I said, the game was a little strange
08:42 in that regard.
08:43 - Hey Josh, sometimes I think people focus on
08:45 just learning from mistakes,
08:46 but you can also learn from doing good things.
08:48 And in that fourth quarter, you go on a touchdown drive,
08:51 you force a three and out,
08:52 then you run out the clock the last five minutes
08:54 and eight seconds with an 11 play drive.
08:56 Are those things that you could put in the memory bank
08:59 in the good way?
09:01 - 100%.
09:03 Again, I think there's many lessons you learn
09:05 every game you play.
09:06 And I would actually start Vinny with the,
09:09 roughing the punter.
09:11 We had an opportunity to make a play there and block a punt
09:13 and just missed that opportunity and then ended up
09:17 getting called for the roughing call.
09:19 And then the defense has to make,
09:23 ultimately has to make a red zone stop there
09:25 to force a field goal,
09:27 which preceded the scoring drive that took the lead
09:30 and then the three and out and then the four minute drive.
09:32 So I thought there was a lot of mental toughness
09:34 and resiliency required from our team,
09:37 in that situation on the road.
09:39 And I thought our maturity showed up.
09:42 We didn't flinch.
09:43 The guys hung in there,
09:45 just kept trying to focus on doing their job.
09:47 And I thought we played some of our best football
09:50 at the end of the game,
09:51 which obviously you're going to need that in close games.
09:55 - Final two questions, Vic and Sam.
09:57 - Yeah, I wanted to ask you about the right tackle rotation.
10:00 Is it possible it's making those guys better
10:02 and the line better as a whole?
10:04 - I mean, I just think that,
10:08 Thayer and Jermaine have busted their butts, man,
10:11 and really worked hard at competing with each other.
10:16 I think they're very unselfish.
10:17 I thought both of them did some good things yesterday
10:20 in the football game.
10:21 Thayer obviously helps us, Vic, as you know,
10:23 as the jumbo tight end.
10:24 So he's on the right and the left,
10:26 kind of just by the nature of playing
10:29 some of that position as well.
10:31 But to me, if you have good football players
10:34 and they've earned the right to play,
10:36 I know most people don't consider that,
10:38 well, you don't rotate.
10:39 Well, we didn't rotate them the entire game long,
10:41 but we have more than two receivers that can play.
10:44 We have more than one back.
10:46 And so those guys earned that.
10:48 And so I think it only helps us
10:51 if we're going to need it eventually in the season,
10:53 which obviously at some point we will.
10:55 And that's what the game of football tells us.
10:59 So I think they both acquitted themselves decent,
11:03 and they both earned this opportunity.
11:05 But I was really happy with the way
11:07 that they played when they were in there.
11:10 And last thing to kind of follow on that, just overall,
11:13 the pass protection that you guys got yesterday,
11:15 what does that say just about the cohesion of the group
11:18 as a whole?
11:19 And how much flexibility does that give you
11:21 as a play caller when pass pros holding up like that?
11:25 Yeah, I mean, the pass--
11:27 I've always-- I've said this for many, many, many years
11:30 is people have always said, what's your passing game
11:34 philosophy, or what do you like to do in the passing game?
11:37 And I've said, protect the quarterback
11:40 and stay inside out, and give him an opportunity
11:44 to read the defense and throw the ball.
11:46 It's not about plays.
11:48 It's not about formations.
11:49 It's not about schemes.
11:51 It's really not about that.
11:53 If you're going to pass the ball successfully in the NFL,
11:56 it needs to start with the guys up front
11:58 and giving the quarterback an opportunity
12:00 to do the things that he needs to do.
12:01 So I thought for the most part yesterday,
12:04 we did a good job of giving him a chance to do that.
12:07 There's definitely some things that we
12:09 will work hard at cleaning up this week
12:11 that we didn't do perfectly.
12:12 But when you can give your guy an opportunity
12:16 to stand in there and read the coverage
12:18 and make some big throws in critical situations,
12:21 that's a good place to start.
12:23 All right, thanks, Coach.
12:24 Thanks a lot, guys.
