00:00:30 We're here with Diana and Maxime
00:00:42 to talk about your programs for this season.
00:00:45 So tell me about your short program
00:00:48 for the 2023-24 season.
00:00:50 So for our short program this year,
00:00:53 we decided to go with a French song
00:00:56 'cause we have World in Montreal.
00:00:59 So we want a tribute for the Quebec population
00:01:03 'cause I'm from there.
00:01:05 So we go with "Donnez-moi de l'oxygène"
00:01:08 from Diane Srain.
00:01:10 But we also take a different version for that song,
00:01:13 which is from Cirque du Soleil.
00:01:15 So it's also another tribute for Quebec.
00:01:18 So that music represents power for us and speed,
00:01:22 and that's what we want to represent this year.
00:01:25 We want to--we do want to improve that a lot from last season.
00:01:29 So that music will be a good vehicle for us.
00:01:32 Yeah, we felt like we would be remiss
00:01:35 to not pay tribute to world being not only in Canada
00:01:39 but in the place where Maxime was born and was raised
00:01:42 and in the language that he grew up speaking.
00:01:45 He didn't learn English till he was in his 20s.
00:01:47 And so, you know, we felt we'd be quite remiss
00:01:50 if we didn't pay some type of tribute
00:01:52 to the fact that it was there.
00:01:54 And this song is very powerful.
00:01:57 It's all about give me oxygen, give me life, give me energy.
00:02:01 And that's what we want to give the crowd is energy, power, speed,
00:02:05 and very in-your-face skating.
00:02:07 So you talked a little bit about improving your speed and power.
00:02:10 So was that a focus from last season,
00:02:13 or are these blocks that you've been planning to build along the way?
00:02:17 So I tend to never look behind
00:02:20 and never look at maybe what I've already achieved
00:02:23 but look forward and look at what I need to get better at
00:02:26 and what I want to achieve to be at the top of the podium on a world stage.
00:02:30 And it was very evident to me about halfway through the season last year
00:02:34 that this was something that we needed to work on
00:02:37 the second that this particular season was over.
00:02:40 After programs have been constructed, it's really hard to change things.
00:02:44 It can affect elements and a multitude of different things.
00:02:47 So the second the season was over,
00:02:49 that was our primary focus was speed and power into every element.
00:02:55 We want to give you something different than what you're seeing from every other team.
00:02:59 So when we do an element, you go, "Wow," every single time.
00:03:03 So we're really proud of the work that we did.
00:03:06 We had a very short off-season.
00:03:08 Our season didn't finish until May,
00:03:10 and we got a lot done in the short three months
00:03:13 before we were coming to Seascape Canada.
00:03:16 So what sort of things when you compete with this program
00:03:20 are you looking for as benchmarks along the way?
00:03:24 Is this a program set, or is it something that is going to start
00:03:27 and then hopefully add things to it as you go?
00:03:30 For sure, we want a greater score.
00:03:33 We want to aim at least for 75 this year in the short program.
00:03:37 Obviously, from last year, some elements in the short program value less points.
00:03:42 So in that regard, it's always difficult to put a mark on what we want.
00:03:48 But we say, "Okay, that's what we aim for this year, and let's go for it."
00:03:52 So I just want to ask one more thing,
00:03:54 because you talked about the power and the speed, which will be a focus.
00:03:57 How do you balance that with the artistry and the performance?
00:04:01 I know Julie is very much about performance too.
00:04:04 We work with Julie basically on a daily basis,
00:04:07 so she's always staying on top of us for the emotion
00:04:11 and the other components of what makes skating so unique in and of itself.
00:04:15 And we also have a theater coach that we work with four hours a week.
00:04:19 And it's very exhausting work.
00:04:21 I joke with Maxine, we always say we have a newfound respect for actors and actresses,
00:04:26 because it's not taxing on the body per se,
00:04:30 but the amount of work to give an emotion to a movement is very exhausting.
00:04:35 And so we hope that we can show that improvement as well,
00:04:39 and balance the two things, both the speed and the artistic impression
00:04:43 and the emotion behind it.
00:04:45 So we've worked on a lot of different avenues.
00:04:47 We're coming at you with hopefully a lot of new things.
00:04:50 And my goal is always that, since I've started skating pairs,
00:04:54 is that I want to look different every year.
00:04:56 I don't ever want to stay stagnant.
00:04:58 And I think that we've accomplished that this season.
00:05:00 Well, we're looking forward to seeing you.
00:05:02 We wish you the best of luck.
00:05:04 And have a great season.
00:05:05 Thank you.

00:05:08 Hello, everyone, and welcome to Pierre Font Quebec
00:05:10 and the 2023 ISU Challenger Series here.
00:05:13 I'm your host, Ted Barton, along with my co-host, Joni McPhail.
00:05:16 Now, Joni, this event has happened eight times in the history,
00:05:21 started in Barrie, Ontario in 2014, no pairs in 2019, of course COVID in 2020.
00:05:27 So now we're back.
00:05:28 We are back.
00:05:29 And this is a really important competition on the calendar for these athletes
00:05:33 for many reasons.
00:05:34 First of all, for some, it's kick-starting their new season.
00:05:38 Some have new partnerships in pairs or dance.
00:05:41 They may be trying new elements and tricks that they haven't performed
00:05:44 in competition before.
00:05:45 And my favorite, athletes coming out of retirement, such as Scott and Tessa
00:05:50 in 2016 making their comeback leading up to the 2018 Olympic Games.
00:05:55 And we all know how that turned out.
00:05:57 So a very important competition.
00:05:59 Yeah, we also had Yuzuru Hanyu.
00:06:01 Remember the Japanese fans flying from Japan,
00:06:04 camping out on your rink doorstep in Oakville just to race to get in the building.
00:06:09 It was crazy.
00:06:10 We had that for two or three or four years, I think it was.
00:06:13 So that was an amazing time as well.
00:06:16 Now let's put the Challenger Series into context here.
00:06:18 Right now for the ISU, the Junior Grand Prix is happening.
00:06:21 It started in Bangkok, went to Linz, Austria, to Istanbul,
00:06:25 and right now is in Osaka, Japan.
00:06:27 Now the Challenger Series is in between the Junior Grand Prix and the Senior Grand Prix.
00:06:31 For those athletes moving out of the Junior Grand Prix,
00:06:33 there's really nowhere for them to go.
00:06:35 They're not going to get in the Senior Grand Prix right away.
00:06:37 And the Challenger Series allows for a bridge, if you will,
00:06:40 from junior to senior and also for world standing points.
00:06:43 It does.
00:06:44 The interesting thing is for those athletes who are moving up from junior to senior,
00:06:49 it's not an easy road because we have an amazing field here at this competition
00:06:54 where these young skaters are going to be up against some of the top skaters in the world.
00:06:58 Yeah, this is almost like a Senior Grand Prix entry,
00:07:00 so you're going to love this competition indeed.
00:07:03 So for example, in the pairs event, let's just talk about some of the athletes here.
00:07:07 We have Ryu Kimura and Ryuichi Kihara from Japan, the current world champions.
00:07:12 Diana Stiletto Dudek and Maxime Deschamps from Canada, fourth in the world championships.
00:07:18 In the men, Kevin Amos, fourth in the world championships.
00:07:22 And the quad god, Ilya Malinin from the United States, who was third.
00:07:27 OK, I want to stop you there.
00:07:29 Kevin Amos has got to be one of my favorite skaters.
00:07:31 Me too.
00:07:32 I mean, just unbelievable, regardless how he skates that day.
00:07:35 So innovative, so creative, and he wears his heart on his shoulder.
00:07:39 And you will see that in his performances.
00:07:42 Ilya Malinin, of course, we covered him on the Junior Grand Prix for a number of years.
00:07:45 Always was a good jumper.
00:07:46 Now he's a great competitor.
00:07:48 The quad god, the quad axel, first man in history to make that.
00:07:50 Go ahead.
00:07:51 And the women's event, current world champion, Kaori Sakamoto, also here.
00:07:55 So it is a stacked field for some of these athletes who are competing internationally for their first time.
00:08:00 And Kaori Sakamoto, two-time world champion, wins the second world title in Japan.
00:08:06 Now what? Think about the pressure.
00:08:08 How do you keep yourself motivated when you're a two-time world champion?
00:08:10 Hopefully we'll talk to some of these athletes throughout the week.
00:08:13 OK, so just a little bit of an update.
00:08:15 We will not be doing commentary on the skaters during this event.
00:08:19 We will be doing some shows, pre-event shows, and some interviews throughout as well.
00:08:25 So make sure you stay tuned for that.
00:08:27 However, we are preparing for the events coming up where we will bring you live commentary in English and French.
00:08:34 And on site at this event, we're actually training some new French commentators.
00:08:39 And we're going to bring you an exciting field of talent for those events.
00:08:42 Skate Canada International in Vancouver in October.
00:08:45 And the Canadian National Skating Championships from Calgary in January.
00:08:50 And we won't announce their names yet, but when you see these French commentators or former skaters, they're going to be brilliant.
00:08:56 A lot of fun, outstanding personalities, and a lot of experience as well.
00:08:59 OK, what's up next here is, besides watching the live stream, that's your part.
00:09:05 Besides watching the live stream, I know it's sunny outside in Pierrefonds, but it's also cooled off.
00:09:11 So it would be a great way to spend a day coming down and watching not only some of the best skaters in the world,
00:09:18 but some of the rising stars and talent coming up as well.
00:09:21 We'd love to see you down here at the rink.
00:09:23 It's great watching online, and we're so proud of the live stream both in the ISU and here in Skate Canada.
00:09:28 But there's nothing like watching skating live.
00:09:30 It's so fast, it's so incredible.
00:09:32 You really don't quite get that feeling.
00:09:34 Well, better than nothing.
00:09:36 You know, if you can't see it, watch it online.
00:09:38 If you want to watch some great figure skating, come down here to Pierrefonds.
00:09:41 And we would also like to thank our sponsors.
00:09:43 Now, if you've watched us before, you know normally we have a lovely table with some flowers on it.
00:09:48 However, our set's a little bit different here.
00:09:50 So I've improvised, and I'm wearing flowers.
00:09:53 So our sponsors, CanadaFlowers.ca, Corporate Traveler, and of course, the Chicken Farmers of Canada.
00:10:00 We look forward to their sponsorships again this year.
00:10:02 So that's the start of this event.
00:10:04 Up next, the Pair Short, which starts right now.
