01:55 Welcome back everyone to the Winsport Arena here in cold, cold, cold Calgary.
02:04 I'm your host Ted Partalong with Lisa Carrier.
02:06 Joining me from Montreal, we have the senior event coming up.
02:09 I'm sorry Lisa, way to cut off, we went to the video.
02:12 But once again, repeat what elements we could see here,
02:17 we will see here in the senior short program.
02:20 Absolutely. So we'll be seeing some intersections.
02:23 You'll see a triangle.
02:24 You'll see the move element, which will be spirals for the short program.
02:29 You will see a no hold element,
02:30 which is where they're going to be doing difficult steps without a hold.
02:33 You'll see a twizzle element,
02:34 which can be done in any formation and an artistic circle or wheel.
02:38 Okay. We just watched the junior free programs.
02:42 What will be the differences that people may be able to recognize the standard,
02:46 if you will, between the junior and the seniors?
02:49 So with senior, typically there's just,
02:52 there's so much going on because they're so strong as individual skaters that
02:56 there is never a dull moment.
02:58 So these teams will just be floating and flowing from one element to the next.
03:03 Oftentimes as a viewer,
03:04 you may not even know where one element begins and one ends because everything
03:07 is just so fluid, so smooth. It's, it's remarkable.
03:12 And then on top of that, of course, you'll see a lot more speed,
03:15 better skating skills, more precision between the movements.
03:19 It's just, everything will be so polished.
03:21 Our three senior teams in Canada are incredible.
03:24 Of course, only two get to go to the world championships later this year in
03:27 April, but any of the three teams could go and could stand on the podium
03:31 because they're just such strong teams.
03:33 So we're really impressed and honored and proud to have these teams
03:38 representing our country.
03:39 As we take a look at the officials list for this event,
03:42 and that's a privilege for these judges as well,
03:45 to judge the senior championship of Canada in synchronized skating.
03:49 Cause we have such a strong group of three teams that, as you mentioned,
03:54 all could medal, possibly medal at the world championships.
03:57 So now what was the question I wanted to ask is that just,
04:02 I have so many questions about synchronized skating. So we talked to, okay.
04:05 So what is the difficulty?
04:06 Is there anything specifically more difficult in the elements in the short
04:11 program than what we saw, you know, because like in juniors and singles,
04:15 you can't do the quad, right. But you can in, in, in seniors.
04:18 What's the difference here.
04:19 So they're not limited in what they can do at the junior level for the most
04:25 part. You'll just see some of some teams attempting higher levels and higher
04:30 difficulty and being rewarded for it.
04:32 So sometimes junior teams will attempt a level four,
04:35 but not get the credit for it. And these senior teams,
04:38 they're running for those top levels in every single element and the
04:42 jury for the quads. And also the quality of the GOEs, I guess,
04:46 really that's where you're going to see the difference between junior and
04:48 senior. So you see the first components, the composition, the skating skills,
04:53 everything is just bumped up one level from junior.
04:59 You can already see how unified the lines are just remarkable.
05:03 And the speed across the ice is incredible.
05:05 This is for the warm up blocks.
05:09 So they will have up to two minutes to really feel the ice beneath their
05:14 blades, feel the energy of the audience,
05:16 make sure that they're grounded and ready to give their very best performance.
05:20 Now may, am I correct in saying, Oh, this is Les Epreims,
05:24 the two time world champions.
05:26 However, this team might be significantly different makeup than last year's
05:30 because some may have retired and there may be new skaters.
05:32 Yeah. So each year the team maintains and retains the same name,
05:37 but the skaters can change. They can change a hundred percent.
05:40 Obviously they're fortunate if they can retain as many skaters.
05:43 And I think with Supreme,
05:44 they do have a number of returning skaters from last season.
05:47 Plus they have a number of their junior skaters that moved up that have gone
05:50 through the system of being trained the Les Epreims way.
05:54 Do you know of a team that has had a three beat three times world champions
05:58 back to back to back?
05:59 I don't know if it's ever happened.
06:02 The two times it's happened. I think it's happened in Finland or Sweden perhaps.
06:07 And it's happened in Russia of course, but, um, we'll see if,
06:11 if Canada can make history.
06:13 And this is one of the three teams that, you know,
06:20 really can battle for the podium at the world championship,
06:22 either the title, but as you mentioned,
06:24 all three teams are at such a high level.
06:27 There's very little to choose between them, but we'll see how they skate.
06:30 They have to perform of course.
06:32 And I'm always amazed that these top teams can continue to deliver quality
06:37 year after year after year. It's amazing what they can do.
06:41 No question. On the ice from Quebec, Les Epreims,
06:44 CPI, Saint-LĂ©onard.
06:48 Their program will be showing the richness of emotions.
06:52 And of course their remarkable skating skills.
06:55 They're coached by Marilyn Langlois and Pascal Denis.
07:00 And they'll skate the short program to "Love is Blindness,"
07:03 "Blinded by Love."

10:03 From Quebec, Les Epreims.
10:08 Holy moly!
10:11 They're such strong performers and they nailed it.
10:17 And I'm so like, to see that quality of performance in January,
10:22 knowing that Worlds are in April.
10:24 I mean, this team is already so impressive.
10:27 And to know that they have months ahead of them to prepare
10:30 for the international events that are coming.
10:33 It's, it's incredible.
10:35 I can't wait to see where they go from here when they're already starting off this good.
10:38 Yeah, well, and also the question is, can they continue to peak or will they,
10:42 they're not peaked yet, but you know, it's a long season.
10:46 So can they hold it? We'll see.
10:48 And that's, you know, engineering as a coach to make sure that your,
10:50 your team can peak when they need to.
10:52 And that's a challenge as well, because it used to be that our nationals were closer to Worlds.
10:56 And so you're peaking around the same time, but there really needs to be, you know,
11:00 an opportunity to come down after nationals to then build up again before Worlds.
11:04 But you did say it's, you know, in this way, if they're prepared earlier,
11:08 they might come down a little bit and build back up.
11:10 But a lot of the skills are already developed at this stage.
11:13 It's a good start, really good start to the season.
11:16 Yes, lots of familiar faces there from past World Championship teams.
11:21 This is such a strong vehicle for this team.
11:26 So much power throughout the program.
11:29 And so many little details, especially again for this early in the season to have so many
11:35 little details already worked out between the finger movements, the arm placements,
11:39 the free leg placements that are not, they're far from basic.
11:43 They are very, very intricate.
11:45 Really nice steps here through their no hold element.
11:50 Great unison on the arms, the free legs, good shape, good lineup.
11:56 And of course the timing.
11:59 This element, this was going into their intersection element.
12:03 And this is where the panel is looking to see the intersection element come from out of nowhere.
12:08 As I say in air quotes.
12:10 But I mean, we don't see an element forming here and then all of a sudden, bam,
12:14 they're in the triangle, they're going through.
12:16 The element of surprise.
12:19 Looking to see that at least three quarters of the team are on one foot for that second
12:26 twizzle, arms above head.
12:28 They may be reviewing because it looked like one skater may have touched down through the
12:33 intersection and that's where they may review to see, did everyone else have their free
12:37 leg up or did it touch down?
12:39 But it looks like they were given full credit when we saw the scores come up live.
12:43 So that's great.
12:45 Really cool creative element there.
12:48 The artistic wheel.
12:49 Just so many musical highlights and the team really stepping into that music.
12:54 And nailing those highlights.
12:58 It was such a polished team.
13:01 And Ted, could you see the difference between junior and senior?
13:04 Yeah, it was pretty clear.
13:07 And it's just so remarkable that so many skaters can skate at that high level together.
13:12 Perfect synchronicity.
13:14 It's just remarkable.
13:16 Let's take a look at the scores.
13:17 74.80.
13:19 Of course, they're the first team out.
13:23 They look pretty happy with that score.
13:31 But one of the competitors on the ice right now from Quebec, Nova.
13:40 Team manager Jacqueline Thelmus and coached by Dominique Barth and Nadine Ducas.
13:48 Another incredibly strong team from Quebec.
13:52 They'll be skating to an energetic mix of Blondie from the 80s.
13:55 Ted, what are they skating to?
13:57 They're going to skate to Call Me in one way or another.
14:02 Thank you!
