QLD’s outdoor sculpture festival wraps up this weekend

Queensland's biggest outdoor art show will wrap up on the Gold Coast this weekend.

00:00 I'm down here on Corumban Beach for the 2023 Swell Sculpture Festival.

00:06 It's wrapping up this weekend, it ends on Sunday, but there's still plenty of time for

00:10 people to get down here and check out some of the sculptures.

00:13 And I'm joined by one of the artists, Cameron Swell.

00:15 You were born to be here with the last name Swell.

00:17 I know, I feel like I'm in a movie, this is crazy.

00:20 Everyone's saying, "Oh, is this your festival?"

00:22 I'm like, "No, not mine."

00:23 Your artwork is called Chained Plane.

00:26 So this is a plane that you picked up from a plane wreckers?

00:29 Yeah, down in Melbourne, and I ferried it up on a truck all the way from Melbourne,

00:34 picked up some wings for it in Sydney, and then I arrived here four weeks before kick-off

00:40 day here.

00:41 So it was a bit under duress, but I made it.

00:44 Here we are, and it's a piece about freedom, really, at the end of the day.

00:47 I was going to ask you, what's the idea behind this piece of art?

00:52 Well, it comes from the lockdown through Melbourne and how I was feeling, so it's kind of me

00:57 wearing my heart on my sleeve or my heart on this plane, to be honest.

00:59 I've heard a lot of people connect to it, so I think it's getting good feedback.

01:04 But people can take my art any way they like, but at the end of the day, freedom of speech,

01:11 freedom, it's for anyone to take it how they like.

01:15 And you actually get smoke coming out of there, so how does that work when that's going?

01:20 That's pretty cool.

01:21 I've got that automated smoke machine, so it comes on a timer, and we've got music coming

01:25 out of it as well.

01:26 It's ticking the boxes for all the sensors.

01:28 We've got sight, sound, and smell.

01:31 It's strawberry-scented smoke, so the kids are digging that.

01:35 Yeah, it's just one for all the sensors, I think.

01:45 But yeah, there's 75 major sculptures down here along the beach at Corumban Beach.

01:50 They're not only here along the grass, but actually on the beach as well.

01:54 So it's worth coming down here and have a look if you are anywhere near the Gold Coast

01:58 this weekend.

01:59 And of course, school holidays are getting out of the way, so it's a good way to bring

02:01 down the kids down here for a swim as well.
