September heat records expected for Australia’s south-east

  • last year
A surprise spring heatwave is hitting Australia's south-east, with temperatures expected to soar this weekend and into next week.
Transcript
00:00 The southeast could be seeing some warmer temperatures well above average in the coming
00:05 days.
00:06 The Bureau says this is driven by a blocking high pressure system which has been stuck
00:10 over eastern parts of the country for about a week and is moving very slowly into the
00:15 Tasman Sea.
00:17 Here in Adelaide we reached a top of 29 degrees yesterday.
00:20 There's a slight cool change sweeping through the state today but we're expected to climb
00:25 back up to 29 by Sunday.
00:28 Melbourne's maximum temperatures are expected to reach 10 degrees above the September average
00:33 with tops of 25 expected there this weekend.
00:36 And current forecasts have most of Sydney expecting temperatures of around 30 degrees
00:41 or hotter over multiple days this week starting tomorrow.
00:45 That's about 12 degrees above the September average.
00:49 Meteorologists are saying Melbourne and Sydney could potentially break records with the number
00:54 of warm days in a row this September, especially in Sydney where there are five days forecast
01:00 over 28 degrees.
01:01 They're saying the sustained periods of warm weather are quite unusual this early into
01:06 spring so unusual that the Bureau hasn't even started their heatwave service for this summer
01:11 yet but I'm sure the warm weather will be welcomed across the southeast.
