00:00 So much energy and so much excitement here at the finish line of the Sydney Marathon
00:07 on the steps of the Sydney Opera House. People have been streaming in from quite early this
00:14 morning. We've had various categories of race. We've had the 10k runners, we've had the wheelchair
00:19 race, we've had the half marathoners and we've had the 42k full marathoners, the winners
00:27 of whom have now come across the finish line to huge cheers. First male over the line,
00:34 Othmane El Ghumri, has come across the line as the winner for the men. He's from Morocco.
00:41 He didn't break the record, the existing record, but he's extremely pleased with the result.
00:48 And a Moroccan man, he said that he dedicated his win to the people back in Morocco, his
00:55 loved ones, who are very much suffering after the earthquake there.
01:00 So he's saying it did affect him a lot obviously because it's his country, he's got loved ones
01:09 who are affected by the earthquake that just happened in Morocco and at some point he didn't
01:15 think he would make the trip to Sydney, but in the last minute he decided to come and
01:23 throughout the race he was thinking about all the people in Morocco and this victory
01:29 is for them. And to the women's winner, Betsy Sainer from the USA was the first woman across
01:35 the line in the 42k marathon. She also didn't beat the existing record, but she was extremely
01:43 pleased with the result. So that's it for the Sydney marathon for this year, an event
01:48 which seems to be growing each year. There's probably been a third more participants and
01:55 supporters on the sidelines cheering it on this year. And this is part of the campaign
01:59 of the Sydney marathon organisers to become part of the majors, which means making Sydney
02:05 a place where those big races can be held, races like the New York marathon, the London
02:11 marathon and the Tokyo marathon. And Sydney has to tick off a few of the criteria and
02:17 that will be decided in 2025.
