00:00 On the Italian island of Lampedusa, residents protest the lack of assistance to the more
00:04 than 10,000 migrants who have arrived on the island in the last three days.
00:09 The tense situation worsens with the arrival of another 1,000 people in the early hours
00:13 of Sunday morning.
00:14 The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Italian Prime
00:18 Minister, Giorgio Meloni, visit the area.
00:21 The Premier attempts to encourage a greater aid from the bloc.
00:24 Meanwhile, locals call for protests over the lack of resources and discrimination against
00:28 migrants and humanitarian organizations are demanding an urgent meeting with von der Leyen.
00:33 According to the Red Cross, there is currently only capacity to accommodate 1,500 migrants.
00:44 For the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, irregular migration
00:48 is a European challenge and needs a European response.
00:51 She made this statement after her visit with the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgio Meloni,
00:55 to the Italian island of Lampedusa.
00:57 They both noted the migratory crisis due to the increase in the flow of immigrants.
01:01 For her part, Meloni stressed the need for serious joint efforts to deal with the illegal
01:05 departures since the consequences would overwhelm the border states and then all of the others.
01:11 The Italian Prime Minister announced that next Monday's meeting of ministers she will
01:15 present for approval a law regulating the stay on the island as well as the repatriation
01:19 of irregular immigrants.
01:21 I confirm that in tomorrow's Council of Ministers we will bring a rule to extend to the maximum
01:32 allowed by the European rules the detention for repatriation purposes of those who arrive
01:37 irregularly initially.
01:39 We will give a mandate to the Minister of Defence to take immediate action to build
01:44 the structures that are necessary.
01:47 We have an obligation as part of the international community.
01:52 We have fulfilled it in the past and we will do so today and in the future.
01:58 But we will decide who comes to the European Union and under what circumstances and not
02:05 the smugglers and traffickers.
02:06 I want to conclude by saying I came here to say to all of you again migration is a European
02:13 challenge and it needs a European answer and solution.
02:18 It is concrete actions that will bring change on the ground.
02:24 It is only through solidarity and unity that we can achieve this and you can count on the
02:31 European Union.
