Transcript
00:00 The Department of Health gave a D.A. the importance of regular check-ups of pregnant women.
00:06 This is to prevent diseases and diseases in babies such as cerebral palsy.
00:12 Mark Petalco has the details.
00:14 According to a study, 1 to 2% of the total population in the country or more than 1 million Filipinos have cerebral palsy.
00:25 According to Dr. Catherine Ann San Diego, a neurologist, the primary cause of cerebral palsy is brain damage while the baby is in the womb.
00:35 Even though it is important for the parents, regular check-ups are needed to avoid other risk factors such as infection, maternal hypothyroidism, and others.
00:45 "If something happens while the baby is in the womb, that's why there's cerebral palsy. And it's not life-threatening. Most problems with cerebral palsy are motor functions, difficulty moving, and mobility. But it's not life-threatening."
01:05 Cerebral palsy can be associated with seizures, learning problems, swallowing, difficulty breathing, oral health problems, and difficulty sleeping.
01:14 Although cerebral palsy is a lifelong condition, there are still things they can do to avoid their situation.
01:21 "We still have treatment available. We have medicines and therapies. We can still solve or alleviate other symptoms."
01:33 Among the individuals with cerebral palsy, Sinayunis Factor and Charito Corazon Manglapus have their own organization.
01:42 It is proven that their family is not a barrier to be productive and be a part of the development. Their message to the public is,
01:49 "People with cerebral palsy should not focus on what they see in the outside world because it can be a disruptive influence to our society and our community."
02:12 "We should be encouraged and motivated by parents with cerebral palsy to not hide their children."
02:22 For parents with children who think they have this condition, doctors advise them to consult a pediatrician to confirm and immediately provide therapy or medicine if necessary.
02:33 The NCDA is inviting the public to participate in activities including the 20th Cerebral Palsy Awareness and Protection Week.
