00:00 Hey, Psych2Goers, we're so glad to see you here,
00:03 and we wanna thank you for supporting us.
00:05 Your ongoing help, sharing, and liking
00:08 has helped Psych2Go continue our mission
00:10 to make psychology accessible to everyone.
00:12 Now, let's begin, shall we?
00:15 There just aren't enough hours in the day,
00:18 Sai says as he looks at his to-do list.
00:20 It's almost the end of his workday
00:22 and he's feeling frustrated.
00:23 There are so many tasks he did not finish.
00:26 It seems impossible to find time for himself
00:28 and keep up with all of his responsibilities.
00:31 Have you ever felt like this, Psych2Goers?
00:34 Maybe you tend to procrastinate
00:36 or feel like you're busy all day
00:38 but aren't getting enough done.
00:39 Either way, this video will help you figure out
00:41 how you're wasting time
00:43 so that you can spend it on the things you love.
00:46 If you can measure it, you can master it.
00:48 Let's be honest, we've all sat on our phones
00:51 scrolling through TikTok for hours
00:53 without realizing how much time has gone by.
00:56 If you're not aware of what you're spending your time on,
00:58 then you might be wasting it.
01:00 After all, how do you know when you're wasting time
01:02 if you're not even conscious of it?
01:04 According to a study by Whitaker and colleagues,
01:07 many people believe they don't use their time productively.
01:10 So by becoming more aware of your time,
01:12 you can stop wasting it.
01:13 In the study, participants were shown how long
01:16 they were using different apps on their computer.
01:18 Because they saw this information,
01:20 they wasted less time on things like social media,
01:22 checking emails and browsing the internet.
01:25 Plus, they reported that they could focus
01:26 better on their work.
01:28 One easy way to become more aware of your time
01:30 is to go to the settings in your phone
01:32 and look at your screen time.
01:33 How much time do you spend on social media every day?
01:37 Are there any apps that you're surprised
01:39 you waste time on?
01:40 Share in the comments below.
01:42 People-pleasing.
01:43 Take a moment to think about what you did over the past week.
01:47 Did you spend time on activities that you didn't have to do
01:50 but did to gain the approval of others?
01:53 According to social worker Sherry Coburn,
01:55 you could be wasting time by doing tasks,
01:58 not because you enjoy them,
01:59 but because you want others to like and value you more.
02:02 Knowing your worth can help you better prioritize your time
02:05 on things you genuinely enjoy
02:07 instead of wasting it on people-pleasing.
02:09 Remember, Psych2Goers, you are valuable and loved.
02:13 You don't need to prove your worth to anyone.
02:16 Time as a currency.
02:18 As Benjamin Franklin once said, "Time is money."
02:21 And we all know that one of the simplest things you can do
02:23 to save money is cut down your spending on things
02:26 that you don't really need.
02:28 Have you ever thought about viewing time as currency?
02:31 This is what psychologist Clifford Lazarus
02:33 suggests to stop wasting your time.
02:35 Time is one of the most valuable things we have in this life
02:38 and it can't be replaced.
02:40 For this reason, Lazarus says
02:42 that if you don't wanna do something, you shouldn't do it,
02:45 unless you truly need to.
02:46 Maybe you have a habit of taking on tasks
02:49 that aren't really important
02:51 without giving it a second thought
02:52 or spending time with people who don't bring you joy.
02:55 Whenever it's possible,
02:56 avoid taking on unnecessary obligations
02:59 that you don't have the bandwidth for.
03:01 Consider the things and people
03:02 that are worth your valuable time.
03:05 What versus how?
03:07 According to Professor Pete Goldwitzer,
03:10 if you focus on what you need to do
03:12 without planning how you're going to do it,
03:14 you could be wasting your time.
03:16 He suggests if-then planning
03:18 to make your schedule more realistic.
03:20 For example, instead of saying,
03:22 "I'll finish my assignment on Monday,"
03:24 you could say,
03:24 "If I finish the background research on Monday morning,
03:27 then I will start writing my assignment in the afternoon."
03:31 To-do list disaster.
03:33 A to-do list can be a great way to plan ahead and save time
03:37 as long as it's organized.
03:39 Professor Michelle Eskrit says
03:42 that if you're writing down tasks in multiple places,
03:44 like a calendar on your laptop,
03:45 an app on your phone, and on paper,
03:48 it can waste time and make you less productive.
03:50 Instead, Eskrit recommends
03:52 keeping your tasks organized in one place
03:54 so that they're easy to keep track of.
03:56 All right, Psych2Goers, now we wanna hear from you.
